White House Declares June to be Official LGBT Pride Month
I see no issue with this other than the White House could spend its time elsewhere.
Working to eliminate discrimination and mistreatment of minorities isn't time wasted.
When's straight pride month?
It shares a month with Stop Posting Month
Why does things like this that relate to LGBT get rated dumb? When did Facepunch become so anti-doing anything to promote LGBT rights. It's like you all think everything's all right in the world and trying to do things is "shoving it in my face" kind of thing, which this isn't even close to it.

Same time as White Rights Month.

For a lot of people, recognizing LGBT individuals and culture 1/12 of the time is 1/12 too much. They're used to "me me me" for 12/12 and now that it's down around 8 or 9 they're getting fidgety. They don't seem to realize that it only exists as a zero-sum game like this in their own minds.
Because we should celebrate people equally every month. Setting stuff like this aside for people only makes the divide further.
"That's right, we need to celebrate everyone equally! Why should we ever have to bring awareness to discrimination or help promote the oppressed? In today's day and age, we're all actually equal, so it only makes us more divided to give the oppressed some recognition of their achievements against oppression and fight for equality."
Says Sir_takeslot, sitting on a gay person as he rests his feet on a black woman.
"Why, we all deserve to be treated equally! If we just ignore the fact that there is inequality, then we are all equal! Why I myself don't even see race, or sexuality. Oppression only exists because we recognize that there are different kinds of people. Commemorative months? Nonsense! We need to celebrate everyone equally all the time!" says he, as a latino child feeds him grapes. "By god, I propose, infact, that we don't even recognize class! Welfare, taxes- nonsense! We should all share the burden equally! My fat stacks of money should be taxed two dollars, while your two dollars should also be taxed two dollars! After all, we should treat everyone equally all the time, setting aside special recognition of income is just widening the class divide!"
"How can people not see it? If the slaveowners and the slaves simply didn't recognize the plight of the slaves then we would all be happier! But instead, the slaves got three whole amendments in the Constitution! Where is the slaveholder's amendments? You see, we merely need to make policy and society celebrate our political equality all of the time! After all, isn't celebrating everybody really simply just celebrating nobody? We're all equal then!"
Sir_takeslot stand up from the gay man and walks down his marble hallways of his Southern mansion before opening the door. "Why, I should share this opinion with the world! Perhaps I will post it to Facepunch!" he says, as he walks on a baby and kicks a bum at the end of his driveway.
Cue my dad screaming at the television about how "obongo is the worst president we've ever had" whilst fox news is on
Sounds like mine. That's all he watches really. He hates Obama, Muslims, gays, and also believes that violent video games are responsible for mass shootings. :suicide:
They should be friends!

Just seems like a strawman attack to me.
if you complain about this then you're getting on your soapbox about something that isn't negatively effecting you at all.
lgbt/gsm minorities have faced problems for decades, straight people don't face it on a comparable level. the point of this is to remember and advocate lgbt awareness, not pander to a bunch of angry nitwits.
Just seems like a strawman attack to me.
100%
but the funny thing is, none of that is any more than one or two mental steps in rationale than the state "we should celebrate everyone equally all the time". And to be fair, I did use him as a springboard and expanded to those other rational steps.
Hyperbole, son. Hyperbole.

Satire usually leads to social change.
It's why as soon as people in the enlightenment started pointing out the pointlessness of torture, slavery, warfare, rape, and dogmatism, everybody suddenly went "oh shit yeah sorry I didn't notice before".

It's more like setting a hay loft on fire
And it was great
Why Not make Tolerance Month?
Why Not make Tolerance Month?
I'm just going to say that "tolerance" doesn't cut it, and also because condensing all days and weeks and months for awareness of marginalized groups into one month would further marginalize those groups.

"US President Sarah Palin announces January is Minority Month."
Go on, have a parade in the snow, you freaks.
Just seems like a strawman attack to me.
It's a huge jump to what I said, but it's still pretty funny.

I mean in the sense that we have a month in which we educate ourselves about the dangers of intolerance and bigotry.
Whose month was it before? I thought they were all spoken for by now.
Whose month was it before? I thought they were all spoken for by now.
It belonged to some lady named June or something
I don't see a problem with this. However, like all pride months, like for example black history month, I think it'd be a lot less intrusive (I dunno if intrusive is the right word but that's the best I can think of) to condense it down to a week, or maybe even a day, like a holiday. That way if you're not into it, you don't have an entire month where you just hear about whatever all the time.
"yea i know racism and oppression is an issue for u... and these things are great awareness and publicity for equal rights... but like im a white straight male, so everythings going for me? so like it doesnt really have anything to do with me? So Id appreciate it if you toned down the complaining? it mildly irritates my sensibilities for 1/12 of the year despite you having to deal with it every day of your life. have some respect for ur fellow man. dont oppress whites just cos u feel opressed too......"
another step forward in agenda
My birthday now falls on gay pride month! Awesome!
I wish I had an excuse to be proud for a month, but I guess I'm nothing special.
Good for them, I suppose.

I don't think this is a dumb idea, but honestly, unless we start putting up billboards, running ads and news specials about LGBT I really don't see the point of just declaring this month LGBT month.
It'd be great if we ran huge interview specials with LGBT people/couples who were perfectly normal, had something going in their life and maybe even had kids who were being raised to be perfectly decent human beings. THAT is what I would like to see, humanizing people instead of just superfluously declaring something without much follow through.
I'm not saying I think any of this is dumb or that I disagree, just that I hope this isn't a political ploy and actually amounts to something beyond words meant to feel good.
I really like this.

Except for the part where I am neither straight nor a man. Nor do any of these celebration months really bother me. It's just that every year a lot of people are tired of having an entire month dedicated to one subject, usually about notable individuals of that topic, again, just like last year, and I think a slightly shorter amount of time would be more palatable to more people.
[editline]e[/editline]
but no clearly I'm a racist sexist homophobic white republican christian man because I realize that some people don't wanna reminded every day all about who George Washington Carver is again this year for an entire month

Did you even read the context that was posted in?
What is this supposed to do exactly?
I mean, its a nice gesture, but I really dont think it'll change anything.
