Surface has competition: everybody meet the Dell XPS 10 Tablet
There are a lot of hybrid tablets coming out this fall. But while the ones we've seen seem to be splitting the difference, Dell seems to be focusing on the best parts of either laptop or tablet. Its XPS 10 is the tablet end of that bargain.
The XPS 10 is a 10-inch ARM-based tablet that comes with a keyboard dock. That's a decidedly different pill than, say, Samsung's Ativ Series 5 and Series 7 slates, which feature their keyboards much more prominently. That is to say, the XPS 10 is designed to work as just a tablet.
That seems like a small distinction, but it's an important one. While Samsung's machines are mainly built as laptops (they run the "full" x86 version of Windows 8), the XPS 10 is an ARM-powered device, so it's thinner, lighter, and more like a tablet you'd buy for actually using a tablet.
The keyboard on the dock, which also doubles battery life, is a little undersized, but going through speed tests on it, it wasn't small enough to lose very much comfort or any accuracy, so it doesn't seem like a huge deal. The mechanism to pop it on and off is simple, and it seems like it should hold up to just grabbing one end or the other.
The XPS 10 shares the same design as the XPS Duo 12, and the previous XPS ultrabooks. It also shares the massively improved trackpad performance of the Duo 12. But most importantly, it shares the concept: Hybrids are great, but only if you really accentuate the things that make one of the two components good. With the XPS 10, that's the lightness, portability, and build quality of tablets. We have to use it more in a full review to see how well that holds up, but for now, it seems like a pretty great idea.
Who wants some photos?

that, is actually pretty cool. not so much just a backwards laptop like the surface
To be really honest with you, this looks a little bit more better than the surface in terms of business or enterprise use, because the Dell "grey" feel really has a good effect to it.
Microsoft should flip out and sue them
When I squint my eyes and stand twenty feet away it looks like an iPad.
Trouble ahead.
Looks a lot like the Asus Transformer but running the arm version of windows. (fucking love my tf101, it goes everywhere with me)
Let's hope that this doesn't lead to another mass of lawsuits flinging shit everywhere, tablets with keyboard / battery docking stations are really nice.
Only real issue is that I imagine it's like my transformer in that the screen can be a tiny bit odd for some people to use, due to the fact that it's quite a wide tablet for it's length. You get used to it quickly, but it can be a bit funny.
I'm really not a fan of tablets but this looks attractive

I actually thought it was an iPad on first sight, like a size comparison or something :v:

Put the tablet alone up next to an iPad and you'll notice the difference in aspect ratio and size easily.
Not really any way for the tablet to look different, when it's got one button and a screen, unless patents are owned on centred menu buttons :v:
Tell Apple that.
I don't know.
I would rather have an x86 architecture inside my laptop/tablet.
A lot of programs I take with me for work depend on x86.
And a hybrid would be a notebook/laptop with an ADDITIONAL tablet use for me, not the other way around.

I will buy an ARM tablet if I'm very sure that everything I need is on the windows store

not like video editing or triple A titles, shit like office (which seems to be guaranteed) and a few other things, I do want to use an ARM tablet at a store so I get a general idea.
I am using somewhat specific statistics and data visualization software, Mathematica, Origin, many self-written software packages for specific instruments, I just don't see that on ARM. It's hard enough to juggle between x86 Win and LINUX
Soo, Does Microsoft still demand that horribly locked bootloader & drivers on ARM tablets running Windows 8 for tablets?

Tablets weren't exactly designed with the working professional in mind :v:

See that's why I want a hybrid with x86
I'm interested to see how this does. I'm keen on buying a surface for right now though
Dell sucks
Dell sucks
Obviously haven't had a decent Dell product have you?
Not to mention THE MONITORS
Dell sucks
not exactly, dell products espcially there monitors (like god damn) are good. My school laptop is dell and has had some failures to it but they're very repairable.
They also look great on a business workspace, seriously
Can we get back to making real computers k thanx.

My fucking XPS was amazing till the motherboard fried on me. But that was due to Nvidia drivers.

Hah, happened to my XPS too. But dell replaced it for free cause I got extended warranty for free. Loved it so much but laptops will be laptops and go obsolete.
I've had my XPS laptop for 3 years now (The first model with an i7 and an SSD in it). Had to replace the screen twice and 6 keys of the keyboard, but its great.
Looks like everyone is onto this built in keyboard dock thing now after ASUS started doing it.
Microsoft should flip out and sue them
the point of making the surface is for it to serve as the example to other OEMs and encourage them to make great hardware like the ativ and this. At release, the surface will only be available in few retails and some online stores. It won't be a business for MS. They don't give a damn if they copy its design more or less just as long as the copycats run windows 8

no, MS is encouraging partners to build these hybrids so that win8 gains traction
Microsoft should flip out and sue them
hybrid tablet/laptops have existed long before microsoft even announced the surface, and suing for that anyways would be pretty stupid

Can't we do both "Real computers" and imaginary ones?
Their Inspiron Duo was amazing, I'm sure this will be just as good. Wish it would come in an x86 version though.
