US planned to nuke the moon in response to Sputnik

I remember hearing about this. The idea was to create a huge dust cloud that would last for days and be seen all around the world every night.
Detonating a nuclear device on the moon because your geopolitical rival put a metal beachball in space seems like a disproportionate response.
Back then they thought that acting crazy was going to scare russians.
Little did they know that russians were all about crazy :v:
Probably would have ended up a bit like Time Machine...
LUNAR LEISURE LIVING!!

Can you imagine if we had no moon? Or half of one? "when I was a kid the moon was a sphere!"
By "nuke the moon" do they mean completely destroy it or just mar it?
By "nuke the moon" do they mean completely destroy it or just mar it?
They weren't going to literally blow apart the moon, they just wanted to kick up a bunch of dust so they can point at it and go "See that? Our nukes did that. We did that."
It would've been one hell of a sight to see from earth
Would it even be visible to the naked eye?
This reminds me of that DragonballZ episode where Piccolo blew up the moon with his Special Beam Cannon technique to prevent Vegeta and Nappa from transforming into giant apes.
We need to have another Space Race in the world. But friendly.
Have all the major countries of the world develop on big thing for space, and see who comes up with the best stuff [cough china cough japan]

Thiss is almost the EXACT same thing. In a symbolic way sort of
I wish we had nuked the moon, that would have been a really cool video to watch

It's funny because the moon was already blown up and there was no way it could have come back.

UHM
they're DRAGONBALLS
you can wish the moon back DUH

What the fuck, the dragonballs were already used, and you had to wait a year to use them again, and there was a long period of time where they all seperated and couldn't possibly find the dragonballs.
Namekian dragonballs okay.
also, why the fuck would they wish the moon back anyway, it was first destroyed for the same reason it was second destroyed, just with Goku instead of Gohan, and then with Gohan instead of Nappa and Vegeta.
[editline]27th November 2012[/editline]
and even then, all this happened before they found out about Namek anyway.
Maybe freiza or some shit, i don't know MAYBE BROLY
[editline]27th November 2012[/editline]
IT COULD HAVE BEEN ANYONE ON NAMEK NOT JUST THE BOYS MAN
why would anyone on Namek, a planet over 3000 lightyears away, want to wish back the Earth moon?
[editline]27th November 2012[/editline]
why the fuck are we even arguing about this

Because that big Namek guy is psychic or some shit or maybe it was Bardock time travelling to ensure the saiyans win.
plausible.

It has been wished back by the dragon-balls. It's obvious that you haven't watched the full-versions of Dragon-Ball (Z). They cut out a whole lot here, in America.
Thumbs down? That's exactly how the moon keeps returning. I even saw the episodes of the times the moon returns. You have absolutely no idea.
It was the episode when Bulma and a bunch of other DBZ characters mourn the fact the moon is gone. So, they solved that problem by wishing it back (they wished to restore other things, also). I know I seen it.

How did the moon get back in the sky at the beginning of the series? Didn't Master Roshi destroy it in the original Dragon Ball?
Near the end of the original Dragon Ball, Kami states (in the original Japanese version) that he restored the moon himself.
FUCK YA
why the fuck are we even arguing about this
because it wouldn't be an SH thread without some sort of argument
one about how the moon came back in an anime isn't exactly the worst thing to happen
Why did I read it as "US planned to nuke the moon in response to Sobotnik"
Honestly...I wouldn't mind seeing that. It's not like it'd harm anyone because obviously no one is on the moon. Except..you know..the alien moon rocks.
would the moon really have blown up though?
would the moon really have blown up though?
read
Doesnt surprise me at all.."If we cant have it, nobody can!!"

your brain expects to deal with Sobotnik more than it expects to deal with Sputnik

I prefer the DBZ abridged version, where he destroys it because it was annoying him.
"STOP MOCKING ME!!!!!!"
Cold war idiocy,not surprising.
