You know what I think they need to do with this rating?
They need to make the ESRB ratings more eyegrabbing. Make it bigger or in more notable colors. Not just a small black and white square in the corner.
Because honestly, the people who the ESRB ratings are mainly targeted towards as I see it are the people who don't know enough from researching or even just reading the backside description on the cover to know their content, and because of their ignorance might buy a product for themselves or someone else that they would end up feeling offended by.
Basically, the people who need the ESRB rating are fucking blissfully ignorant morons, and as such I think the ESRB is simply too small and easily overlooked by someone who's shit at paying attention. It needs to be like a large fucking neon stop sign, something you can't goddamn miss, because the people it's aimed at are simply not people that expect to see anything they need to pay attention to and probably thinks that if little 9-year-old Billy wants Manslaughter: Drug Rape 7 then it's probably a game suitable for kids since he's usually such a well behaved boy.
This is why I prefer PEGI, IMO its much clearer what the age rating of a game is and why it is that. Maybe its because of the use of colours but its very easy to spot.
For some reason I got games with mixed ratings. Like BF3 for PS3 has 16+ from PEGI on cover and 18+ from German ratings on disk.
There's too much white in comparison to black now.
i have a couple esrb games but i've seen some weird european variants too.
