Plus, there are a lot of women who disagree with what Sarkeesian is saying. I see a lot of video reactions on youtube by women who disagree with her and don't feel threatened or objectified by video games. That's a checkmate.
that's like saying racism is alright because some parts of the affected group are okay with it.
it has no rigor whatsoever
if by rigour you mean uniform principle, then yes but that's because it's a method and a starting point, not an ideology. i could take a marxist stand-point, analyze a book, and end up with a viewpoint that is anti-marxist.
If only there were some word for for vagina which was similarly offensive to dick so we wouldn't have this STUPID, STUPID argument OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
what? reducing a woman to her sexual reproductive organs is not comparable to reducing a man to his sexual reproductive organs in a patriarchal society
well not necessarily money but out to gain something, usually status is this a foreign concept to you? it's how I perceive all social interactions
people use social interaction as a means to an end about as much as you do.
is this a foreign concept to you? it's how I perceive all social interactions
no it's not a foreign concept to me, i'm just not that paranoid. like i think my mum has good motives, but a cynic would think that my mum is just trying to butter me up so i give her money.
that's like saying racism is alright because some parts of the affected group are okay with it.
Nobody is okay with racism except racists.

so is this going to be another "Thisispain, Sanius and Lankist shouting at the entire forum for a week" thread like the last one?
so is this going to be another "Thisispain, Sanius and Lankist shouting at the entire forum for a week" thread like the last one?
if you're not going to contribute don't post
litcrit is completely bereft of intellectual integrity because its output is purely a function of the preconceptions of the authors
is debate also bereft of intellectual integrity then? the difference is that mathematics is a science that operates based on deductive reasoning, i don't see how you can compare that to literary criticism by means of intellectual integrity because literary criticism operates based on philosophical reasoning. isn't intellectual integrity a character trait anyway?
so is this going to be another "Thisispain, Sanius and Lankist shouting at the entire forum for a week" thread like the last one?
No, it can't be Sanius renamed his account!
what? reducing a woman to her sexual reproductive organs is not comparable to reducing a man to his sexual reproductive organs in a patriarchal society
yes, this world is being oppresed by men and is only in favor of men!
so is this going to be another "Thisispain, Sanius and Lankist shouting at the entire forum for a week" thread like the last one?
it's hardly shouting, i'm just on my fat arse listening to marvin gaye while absorbing the nice weather outside.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tnJxqRLg9x0
Just watched that video because of the Powerpuff vilian in the preview shot, which piqued my interest because of the nature of the character and people earlier in the topic talking about cherrypicking and intentional decontextualizing. She brought up that the character is a blatant exaggeration of feminism, with a focus on overblown negative traits. It conveniently left out, though, that the resolution to the episode was literally that said character was a hypocritical douche who knew jack shit about what she was talking about and was making life for people who actually believed in those ideals all the harder because of it. The entire point of the episode was that she wasn't a feminist at all, and was just using the feminist song and dance as a suit of morality-based bodyarmor.
yes, this world is being oppresed by men and is only in favor of men!
mm take that statement down a couple of notches in strawman "this world is ruled mostly by men and gives favour towards men in many facets of society" there you go
what? reducing a woman to her sexual reproductive organs is not comparable to reducing a man to his sexual reproductive organs in a patriarchal society
So it would be acceptable if this weren't a patriarchal society?
So it would be acceptable if this weren't a patriarchal society?
insulting people isn't acceptable regardless
is debate also bereft of intellectual integrity then? the difference is that mathematics is a science that operates based on deductive reasoning, i don't see how you can compare that to literary criticism by means of intellectual integrity because literary criticism operates based on philosophical reasoning.
I don't see how that absolves it from anything. there's good and bad philosophical reasoning, and litcrit is almost overwhelmingly in the bad camp
isn't intellectual integrity a character trait anyway?
in the narrowest sense, yes. substitute "litcrit" for "people that write litcrit" as for this debate, yes it's pretty fucking pointless unless dori can propose a test that would falsify the stuff he's saying [editline]8th July 2012[/editline]
insulting people isn't acceptable regardless
take your own advice mate
insulting people isn't acceptable regardless
But would it reach the level of acceptability that dick is at now? I suppose that's what I actually meant.
It conveniently left out, though, that the resolution to the episode was literally that said character was a hypocritical douche who knew jack shit about what she was talking about and was making life for people who actually believed in those ideals all the harder because of it. The entire point of the episode was that she wasn't a feminist at all, and was just using the feminist song and dance as a suit of morality-based bodyarmor.
except feminists are always accused of being hypocritical douches. it's a very obvious caricature. the episode, which i've seen a long time ago too, doesn't really put forward the notion that it was making life harder for feminists. it's just played for laughs.
what? reducing a woman to her sexual reproductive organs is not comparable to reducing a man to his sexual reproductive organs in a patriarchal society
you're arguing for gender equality, but in attempting to do so you're also seperating and unequalizing genders purely because of insults? are you actually arguing your point or do you just have some kind of digital dictionary scrambler assemble posts for you
I don't see how that absolves it from anything. there's good and bad philosophical reasoning, and litcrit is almost overwhelmingly in the bad camp
well what's the alternative? balancing the book on your head?

She also says Betty from Rugrats is a straw feminist because she "pushes around her husband and has a female sign on her shirt". When in the show Betty was the most level headed of the parents and loved that Howard was kind and caring and teased him about being weak because she thought it was funny. There was even an episode where she shouted down some dude who was mocking Howard for liking to cook, which was awesome. This is the problem I have with this woman, she only looks at the surface of the characters she's "criticising" and jumps to conclusions based on how she assumes the characters are. She also seems to assume that if a character falls ito a particular trope or archetype that they are inherantly sexist. Which is just dumb.
if you're not going to contribute don't post
Why are you posting then? :o
you're arguing for gender equality, but in attempting to do so you're also seperating and unequalizing genders purely because of insults? are you actually arguing your point or do you just have some kind of digital dictionary scrambler assemble posts for you

well done, you argue against sexism while using an avatar that references 1920's erotic fiction. isn't using hypocritical avatars something you agreed with Sanius on?
my god you ask a lot of questions
except feminists are always accused of being hypocritical douches. it's a very obvious caricature. the episode, which i've seen a long time ago too, doesn't really put forward the notion that it was making life harder for feminists. it's just played for laughs.
you can play something for laughs and make a serious point as well you know
except feminists are always accused of being hypocritical douches. it's a very obvious caricature. the episode, which i've seen a long time ago too, doesn't really put forward the notion that it was making life harder for feminists. it's just played for laughs.
Though I don't remember it putting forward the notion of it making it harder for actual feminists, I don't remember it being played for laughs either. In fact I'm pretty sure I remember power puff girls were pretty pissed. I don't know though it's been so long and it's a show that I've only seen a few episodes of. I could be wrong.
well what's the alternative? balancing the book on your head?
are you high
except feminists are always accused of being hypocritical douches. it's a very obvious caricature. the episode, which i've seen a long time ago too, doesn't really put forward the notion that it was making life harder for feminists. it's just played for laughs.
No, that was the entire turning point. The girls realized that she was full of it when a bunch of women who really held those beliefs showed up at their doorstep, and showed them the wounds they suffered while trying to do the right thing when that loon was out and about.
I was just about to post this. She also says Betty from Rugrats is a straw feminist because she "pushes around her husband and has a female sign on her shirt".
