the intention of these open-carry protests are good, that intention being to raise public awareness that someone carrying a gun isn't always a threat, but the problem is social media brought out the retard picnic. Its become like some masturbatory pat on the back competition, like let me take my video camera and film how many people I can make uncomfortable and show the cops how stupid they are! lmao!
Even the NRA has expressed sentiments of these people going to far. Yes you have a right, but unless you're a literal autist, you should understand that openly carrying a rifle is going to make people concerned in the wake of a dramatically increased national coverage on spree shootings. So when the cops inevitably show up to confront you, you don't get to act righteously indignant that they want to know whats going on.
You've hit the nail on the head pretty much, I can't find a single large organization (like the NRA) who's okay with this sort of thing. We have all sorts of rights and personal liberties that we enjoy daily, but with that comes a certain degree of personal responsibility in the exercise of these rights.
Just because you can doesn't mean that you should.
im ok with people owning whatever gun and im alright with them being able to carry a revolver or pistol but fuck being able to just walk around with a rifle or shotgun.
I wouldn't be okay with cherry-picking the law, that never works out well with these sort of things, but I think everyone (especially gun owners and extra especially those who carry every day) should be calling these guys out in public. They want to exercise their 2nd amendment rights? Exercise your 1st amendment rights, you have them for a reason.

Ironically you're many, many times more likely to be injured or killed by a person carrying a pistol than you are a rifle or shotgun.
I want to open carry siege weapons.

I'd like to see Target try and keep me out.
God damn it, these retarded fucking open carry activists are ruining everything.
Don't open carry a rifle you fucking idiots. Open carry a goddamn pistol. The point of open carry is self defense you're not gonna whip up a fucking AR-15 if you're getting mugged to stop it the ONLY thing you're doing is pissing off everything like neckbeard autists.
Well, to be fair, no one would want to mug a guy wearing an AR-15 on his shoulder, so you could consider carrying an AR-15 an act of self-defense.
assault weapons do not exist
I see...
Wait, wait, wait... WAIT.
So, normally, people in america can walk into a store with a fucking assault rifle?
wtf america get your shit together
yeah people can walk into stores in the UK with an assault rifle too
usually it's called robbery

if they want to protest without upsetting people/corporations why not just carry the receiver? i dont get how these people dont see they are hurting there own cause with this stupidity, a good example would be starbucks they banned open and concealed carry because people thought it was a good idea to use there stores to stage a protest
In other news: Dipshit protestors ruin it for everyone else yet again
Yeah, big time! Now my children won't be able to carry their lovely AK-74U's into stores!
I don't see how "please don't walk around in our store carrying a gun" is an unreasonable request
if they want to protest without upsetting people/corporations why not just carry the receiver?
because this isn't actually about any kind of legitimate protest; they just want to show the world how they're big men with big guns because deep down they're actually insecure manchildren.
gonna stand up to that goddamn liberal obama and that bitch ex wife by waving my gun around in front of a bunch of fry cooks at a burger king

Actually the whole thing started because you were allowed to conceal carry pistols while not being able to open carry them, even though it's completely legal to open carry a rifle anywhere. The original protests, which did not involve going into stores, was to highlight that fact.
Of course what these guys are doing is just stupid.
Why is America mainly the only place where this is such a god damn problem?
Thing is, right to open-carry a rifle is a matter of not having to put your rifle away all the time whenever you're doing odd errands in situations where carrying a rifle is natural; not a matter of HEY LOOK I HAVE A RIFLE, ARE YOU IMPRESSED YET, GIRLS?
So like, if you're camping in bear-country and have to stop by the general store for smokes, or you're out hunting and have to fill your chevy up, or been at the range and need to buy a pair of boxers on your way back, you can just kinda bring it with you like you would if it was a guitar after band-practice.
To be honest; if I would not want police or military going around with assault rifles, I definitely would not want random strangers doing that either.

Wait, wait, wait... WAIT.So, normally, people in america can walk into a store with a fucking assault rifle?wtf america get your shit together
Not an assault rifle. ARs are select fire, the average citizen can only obtain a semi-automatic unless they get a Class III license. Regardless of technicalities this isn't uncommon at all. Gun owners will 'protest' for their right to own weapons by openly carrying them in public. It's completely legal and the vast majority of the time they don't bother anyone. I've personally seen a guy with an AR-15 on his back walking around Walmart like it was normal, and no one really paid him much mind.
What backwater redneck state dobyou livebin
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault_weapon
In 1994 the US Justice Department stated that "assault weapons are semiautomatic firearms with a large magazine of ammunition that were designed for rapid fire and combat use". Whether or not that term is still relevant nowadays is up to each person.
What's that? I can't hear you over the sound of me derailing every conversation about firearms with a pedantic discussion of what is and isn't an "assault weapon."
because this isn't actually about any kind of legitimate protest; they just want to show the world how they're big men with big guns because deep down they're actually insecure manchildren.

[editline]2nd July 2014[/editline]
ad hominem actually
What's that you say? A crazed gunman opened fire into a crowd of people with an assault weapon? Boy, let me tell you, nothing gets me angrier than when a news reporter mislabels a gun. Fortunately, because of all that shooting stuff, I now have an opportunity to tell people over and over what the difference between a clip and a magazine is.

gosh you can't even incorrectly name something
Open carry flaunters are dumbshits, even /k/ is sick of them

Well if you haven't done the reasearch, or aren't intelligent enough to use the proper terminology, then you apparently don't know or give a fuck enough about the issue to warrant my attention.

thanks for informing me that i need to know what kind of round an m249 chambers to say that waving one at a class of schoolchildren on a field trip to the zoo is wrong. i'll crack open the 'ol wikipedia
Who the fuck came up with naming ordinary handguns, rifles and carbines.. assault weapons?
What backwater redneck state dobyou livebin
What's acceptable where you live is different than where others live. In Minnesota there's a big divide. You go up north to iron range country and it's odd not to see someone with a gun on their hip or over their shoulder, while here in the cities it is very very very uncommon to see someone wearing a gun on their hip let alone a rifle over their shoulder. Granted up north the reason they carry is more due to the dangerous wildlife than your street thug.

But, like, it's the States. You've probably driven to the range, driven to your campsite, or driven to those remote-ass woods somewhere no doubt.
So just, like, I dunno, leave your fucking weapons in the car? You ain't getting jumped by a grizzly in the general store. Unless it's staffed by bears or something, but that raises more questions really.
Why does everyone think the guy has a cat?
Because of the aisle he's in? That's the baby isle. Those are baby toys. There is even a sign about car seat sizes.
I used to work at Target.
I'm pro gun, but even I think these guys going out the shopping centers and restaurants with rifles is nutty. Conceal carry and keep your guns low profile.

ya most states you can open carry in public / in stores but people most of the time just go for a walk with their weapon.

You're welcome! Do you also call every video game console "nintendos"? Because you may want to research that too! That way when you speak, it sounds like you actually know what you're talking about....

Ace-pro argument man. Totally ruined him by arguing nothing but semantics the entire time.
Tip: Nobody but a small group of you actually give a fuck about that shit. "Assault weapons" might have been a made-up classification, but it's stuck now and is largely used to describe weapons decked out in such a way to make them more comfortable (and by extension more effective) to use. Yeah it was a pretty damn arbitrary definition, probably shouldn't have been defined as it was really. But that doesn't matter now, the term is a term, it will be used either way.
