No that's bullshit. "Can't complain about X because Y is bad too" is bullshit. I can complain about the non-farmed, inhumane slaughter of a sensitive threatened animal that has no major benefit compared to other animals other than its size, amount of meat, and how much it will fetch you on the markets. This is not comparable to factory farming where industry practices can readily be improved for animal welfare, where each farm is different than the other. Yes factory farms can be shit but that's easily fixable though policy and the population isn't going anywhere. Killing a whale shark for its monetary value is universally reprehensible, and irresponsible stewardship to nature and is of a completely different calibre.
I can complain and I will conplain.
But dude there are children in Africa...
apparently the chemicals the body releases during periods of extreme pain and fear make it tastier.
Apparently it actually makes the meat taste worse, at least in the case of cows and chickens.
That's fucked up but people acting like only china can pull this off or like china is the only place where animals are cruelly treated are delusional. Animals are mistreated everywhere to very varying degrees for the sake of producing good food. We boil lobsters alive, we forcefeed geese to basically give them liver conditions so that they're tastier, we cut open the throat of pigs to bleed them dry without putting them to sleep first, we do a lot of fucked up shit and that kind of shit doesn't only happen in China.
Stop taking some form of moral high ground just because it's a foreign country with a bad reputation. If you're going to get offended at this shit, get offended at the shit that happens on your own doorstep as well. Doesn't mean you can't criticize it, but at least have the decency to not criticize it like some form of unique phenomenon.
The more I hear about China the worse it sounds.

You're comparing a pig or a duck to a whale shark?

This is a thread about a whale shark getting cut in half. If you want my opinion about other animal injustices you can go look at the many other threads in which I've posted my disgust with halal and kosher slaughter practices, whaling, factory farming, using live turtles as Keychains, keeping whales in captivity, and every other animal welfare issue. I buy cageless eggs, freeroam chicken, and don't eat fish. Is that better? Does that have anything to do with the thread? No.

also why would whale shark taste any different from sand shark or any other common shark? whale sharks are nice people.
It's fucking arbitrary too because coby beef for example the cows are slaughtered when they are perfectly relaxed because they don't want the meat to be tainted by adrenalin

Most decent farmers will use a bolt driver to kill pigs before they drain them. I've got several family members and close friends that farm, and they're very humane with their treatment of animals.
That video made me physically sick. Jesus fucking christ.

Thats something only the biggest evil would say.
"make them suffer. They'll taste better after that!"
Christ...
everything after you see the shark gasping is just... why?
"Ancient Chinese traditions" my ass. I just can't tolerate this, this is barbaric.
Savages. Pure unadulterated cruelty for no good reason.

I'm not taking the African poverty fallacy here. I'm saying that it's silly to be mad about this and be ignorant about essentially equally bad-- or worse-- practices. I'm not the one taking the false moral high ground here; by exhibiting willful ignorance, you would be. Factory farming to save money and killing something alive to earn money really aren't that different. You're completely allowed to complain, but people complaining about how sick and twisted China is compared to "us" aren't.

Missed this, my bad.

You're right but I want to mention that apparently whale sharks are endangered and its a crime to hunt them
It's most likely the case that a majority of the fishermen in that video are uneducated laborers doing what they can to provide for their families. As far as they're concerned, they don't even realize the whale shark is something that is rare, endangered, or illegal to hunt. They see it as an amazing chance at profit, at being able to provide for their children to move to the city and attend a school or get an education, or even just to have enough money for their families.
Yes, it's barbaric, but it's not all about the fishermen; a large part of the blame lies in the industries that exploit these actions too. If rhino horns didn't fetch an exorbitantly high price, no one would hunt them; if whale shark skin wasn't so sought-after, people wouldn't wrangle them. There's a lot of factors going into these issues, and they're most certainly not just about the guys doing the physical work.
Maybe if enforcement of these illegal hunts was a lot more proactive, and the fines a lot heavier, then it'd dissuade this kind of action -- unfortunately, law enforcement in these areas tends to be a gray zone at best. Toss the guards some money and they'll usually gladly turn a blind eye.
It adds texture to soup and is virtually tasteless. Gordon Ramsey of all people has a documentary on shark fins soup and his description of it is "bizarre." Going on to say the soup part is good but would be better if you substituted the fin for a protein or something else. Shark fun soup is primarily a status symbol, costing hundreds of dollars per bowl because of the high price of the fin. It's primarily consumed by rich, upperclass traditional families, or only during important events like weddings. It's not as popular among young people who are more conscious of the impacts. Infact, some areas and large companies in China have banned the sale or transport of fins. The Chinese Government and Hong Kong government even banned fins at official banquets.
Need to update you there, Sharkfin has become so common in around Asia countries that generally you can get inferior quality sharkfin for a cheaper price, but it still gives off that status symbol. Hence, middle class people are still able to afford Sharkfin. Its a common dish especially when families are involved.
And while its banned, other asian countries couldn't give a shit, the chinese whom have an appetite for sharkfin will import it via illegal means or from countries that don't ban sharkfin.
And with the advancement of mock meat, the mock shark fin (commonly known as fish maw soup now) is almost identical to actual shark fin, since shark fin has no taste, and the texture is almost the same (silky and soft gelatine)
I've had real shark fin and mock shark fin (aka Fish maw) and can barely tell the difference.
not every chinese person eats this
The market is large enough that it threatens to kill off several species.
Animals get eaten alive in nature all the time

They still could have killed the poor bastard first.
In nature they're eaten alive by a predator, who's doing so to survive and has no concept of morality or cruelty and does not have the methods/tools to put it down humanely before chowing down. We do have those concepts, methods and tools, and this isn't to survive. This is an atrocity, nothing else.
I want to know what is happening when they cut into it and it gushes clear white water
While this is honestly horrifying to watch can we please stop generalizing that this is the only kind of stuff that goes on in China? In my 6 times visiting the country (At least 6-7 of the major cities) I've never seen this happen at any level to any animal. There's no denying that it goes on but it's really not as common as some of you may think. Jumping on the "omg i hate china" bandwagon is really silly.
"The fear adds spice"
Seems like eastern "Traditions" are 90% animal cruelty and poaching.

And this is being performed by humans who have a choice in the matter to put the thing out of its misery at least.
Also, I'm pretty sure animals don't slice their prey up into little pieces. This is serial killer-tier shit.

Yup. They were having fun doing this.
