• Banksy asks 'Why?' over stolen mural
But someone else is making money off of something you do for free, for others to see.
An artist would be a massive hypocrite to claim any ownership of his art after willfully ignoring the rightful ownership of the surface he painted the art on. The only reason this is even an issue is that a bunch of people seem to think Banksy's 'art' is special. If it were an extremely well-done tag being torn off a wall and sold I seriously doubt anyone would be defending the tagger as an artist and complaining that their 'work' is being unfairly used. If you alter someone else's property without permission, you don't get any control over how that property is used.
I'd be fucking mad if someone stole a piece of my wall, grafiti on it or not.
"you're not gonna believe what I got for a pound last week"
Ashens is Banksy
why do so many people love Bansky so much?
because vandalism is everything good ever as long as it's ~artistic~ (a couple stencils and a prop maybe sometimes) and ~deep and meaningful~ (has a meaning that everyone can easily get but still feels like some deep thought)
has Banksy's identity ever been established? you'd think with all the CCTV in the UK it'd be pretty easy to do this
nope [t]http://imgkk.com/i/f051.jpg[/t]
I hadn't heard of this guy until earlier today (I'm an American), his work is astounding.
because vandalism is everything good ever as long as it's ~artistic~ (a couple stencils and a prop maybe sometimes) and ~deep and meaningfun~ (has a meaning that everyone can easily get but still feels like some deep thought)
i dont know why you are such a jerk vandalism is one thing, spray painting and expressing art is something totally different and its just the UK's ridiculous law system that cant see the difference considering they banned "music with repetitive beats" its not like i expect anything more from them anyway
how has he not been caught though, that's the thing i don't understand
You have no right to get angry about someone using your work in a way you don't want when you were using their property in a way they don't want in the first place. If a street artist is going to put his art up without getting permission from the owner of the property, he shouldn't be surprised if they do with the art as they see fit, and that includes tearing it down and selling it. It's hardly protected property if it was never the artist's property to begin with.
He shouldn't be surprised? He's not allowed to be angry? That's a bit extreme. Yeah legally that logic is valid but it goes against the spirit of graffiti and street art. It was meant for everyone to enjoy, not just those with the money to buy it.
Expressing yourself artistically on someone else's property without their permission is still vandalism.
i view it as a fun surprise
In my area, some artist was commissioned to make a big mural on a building in the park. It took 6 months to complete. The day after it was completed, someone wrote "FUCK" in huge white letters in spray paint. The artist had to take the entire thing down.
What is this? http://superofficialnews.com/banksy-arrested-in-london-identity-revealed/
"We had a 24-hour Anti-Graffiti Task Force monitoring different groups known to have associated with Banksy. We received word that around 2am a group of individuals left a flat speculated to be one of Banky’s art studios. This group was followed by agents and once vandalism had occurred, we then arrested the group, 5 men total." how could you even remotely think this was a legit article

There are plenty of street artists who do this- have you seen those '3D' projections drawn on city streets? If Banksy did that with his art there would be no problem whatsoever. But as long as it continues to be vandalism because art's better when you ~fight the power~ then all I can say is tough shit. And it takes a special kind of asshole to get angry over someone else selling his work, when his work was vandalizing that someone else's property in the first place.

We're talking about a guy who printed a million quid of banksy dollars with intent to toss it into a crowd like parade confetti

He's clearly not doing it for the art, which is why I don't understand people saying 'what an awful thing to take away and sell what should be public art'. It's not public art, it's deliberate civil disobedience with a political message. Hell, if someone is subverting his work to make money off of it, I think they're playing him at his own game.

[editline]23rd February 2013[/editline] Not saying that the owner isn't in the legal right of course.

Most of it is pretty sophomoric as far as art goes, I can't understand why it's so idolized. You know, there are good arguments on both sides for whether street art should be considered art or vandalism, but when the guy in question also likes to pull public stunts like putting his own work in an art gallery I'm inclined to lump him into the 'pretentious jackass' category.
[t]http://arrestedmotion.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/the_lonely_villein_banksy_21.jpg[/t]
Holy shit. They fucking bastardized it by changing it, the bare image means nothing, and some asshole paid money for it.
to be honest he forfeits it by making it on someone else's property. I don't care if you use frosting to write your name on my cake, I can still serve the cake to whoever I want because I paid for it or baked it or however you want to see it
Legal or not, it's still a fucking dick move.
The whole reason why the person took it off the wall was to gain profit for himself. Fucking disgusting.
banksey is the best artest b cos he makes graffitis and nobody knows who he is and the graffitis have a secret messege and every one wishes they were a cool skate boarding graffiti artest
I hope they give back the art to the street where it belongs.
