Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

As if I give a shit... I hate ads and always will.
No ads for me on FP :smug:
Did you know that a majority of viruses these days comes from advertisement programs?

Of course they do.
:downs:
No seriously, are you mad that you have viruses on your computer after going to ED or Pornhub?

Oh nice one. I'm sure you're president of the debate club.
Rumor has it that websites cost money to run.
Why the fuck do you even start a site when you know that you can't pay for it?
I'm not surprised this costs them money. And I'd be willing to disable my ad blocker, had I not noticed a huge decrease in spyware/adware on my computer since installing it. Sorry guys. :(
Blocking ads to stop viruses is only fighting the symptom of having a insecure browser/computer.
I only have Adblock on my netbook to keep sites a bit lighter, though I can't really remember the last time I ran into a site that had annoying ads. A few times talking ads, but those generally get removed sooner or later.
Also if you block major ad providers (such as google) who generally keep their ads clean you are a communist hippie who hates his nation.

Excellent strawman. Stop getting excited and comparing a digital business to a physical one with an example involving actual larceny and you might be taken seriously.
Why the fuck do you even start a site when you know that you can't pay for it?
Because the majority of people think their website will just magically make money, since the internet is a wonderful place where dreams come true.
I'd allow ads, but they can often contain malware.
I'd allow ads, but they can often contain malware.
Unless you visit porn sites or some shady pages every 2 seconds, no.
I'd allow ads, but they can often contain malware.
No.
I wonder if 1 person click on ad which cost $0.10 per click 100 times , imagine a thousand people click the same ad 100 times.
The problem is that i don't care, if they gave us money for clicking ads that would have been another story
Unless you visit porn sites or some shady pages every 2 seconds, no.
Wrong.
Just a few months ago the ads on FP had some shitware in them.
dont give a shit
ads are annoying
And you'd use the report button and the bad ad would be gone in a matter of a few hours.
I agree with everyone, a lot of ads are really annoying, the sounds are the worst part. Those smiley ads that used to say "HELLLLO", I remember the first time I heard it I freaked out, thinking someone was there. Only to realize it was a faggy smiley thing
This is one of those things that you only truly understand being on the other side of the fence. It'd suck to build a great website that everyone loves and has tons of potential, only for it to crash and burn because everyone was blocking the ads.
But whitelisting you favorite/trusted sites is a start
As this is more or less a discussion about ads now, how the fuck do I block the fucking:
1. Partypoker popups?
2. Flash stuff that covers the entire screen and after 5 seconds you may find a tiny " close button " in the edge of the screen, this also opens a new page.
3. The fucking " Heeey sexy, wanna c me naked? " things in the corner that looks like msn messages?
I got adblock plus but whenever I block something and go to the same site later it's just a new ad taking the old one's place.
also get noscript
It's a bit of a pain at first, but once you figure it out and have all your common sites set up up, its just as awesome if not better than adblock

I hate my nation. If that's what it takes to block ads. No matter if they're clean or not.
That's really only if the site's only income is that of internet advertisements.
Adblock Plus is a fucking savior on the porn website. Some ugly lady, block, penis in the picture, block.

A really fat dude then a muscular dude, block.

Except TV advertisers don't pay based on how many people actually watch the ad, they generally pay based on how many are expected to watch the ad.
Why the fuck do you even start a site when you know that you can't pay for it?
You must be new to the internet :downs:. Some people start a small website that they expect to have a small following and they pay for it by working a 9-to-5, no ads. Then suddenly their website becomes very popular and now they are paying a large sum of money for bandwidth and they can no longer afford it, so they hope that by attracting advertisers they can get enough money to keep the site running while still paying some out-of-pocket for hosting.
Now the website is getting about 500k hits a day, but because the community is so shitty it's hard to attract good advertisers. /story of 4chan.
I'd allow ads, but they can often contain malware.
I don't use any kind of ad blocking addon, and I almost never had problems. I don't visit FPSBanana anymore though :saddowns:
As much as there are good reasons for ads existing, adblocking exists for very good reason as well.
I'm running no-script to protect myself from exploits, slow loading times, trojans, viruses and general annoyance. I'm not proud of it, but technology has forced me to resort to such measures. Remember when ads consisted of simpler banners that did not play sounds, pop out of their frame, cover the page or try to give you malware?
As has been said a good fifty times in this topic, I adblock. I'd love to give my favorite sites whatever revenue they'd be making off of them, I really do. But I just can't tolerate the loading times or the sounds, and those are the lower-down reasons for it. Then there's the satanic ads that either take over the entire page, or even worse go OH I'M SCANNING YOUR FUCKING COMPUTER NOW AND CLOSING YOUR BROWSER YOUR COMPUTER IS AT RISK HEY MIND IF I PUT A TROJAN ON HERE CLOSE BROWSER SORRY CAN'T LET YOU DO THAT DAVE
I love Destructoid, and I love FPSBanana, and I love Facepunch, but by God they've been plagued with such ads too many times for me to not block them. Not to mention I'm a paranoid bastard period, so that makes me even more jumpy about anything other than the page's main content.
I don't use a adblocker because I want the internet to stay as free as it is today. If everyone was using adblockers every file- or imagehost, every forum, every news site would require you to pay to visit it.
I would hate myself for using an adblocker.
Because I will never visit a gay christian dating site, or a site that sells pink umbrellas so why have them?
Because you hurt the site you visit? Read the fucking article!!
play secretly, my lord
Brilliant, so they blocked people from seeing content who blocked the ads.
meaning that the people who though may not have been earning them revenue, are now not actually looking at their website at all, thus not spreading it through word of mouth or through other mediums. So instead of only losing revenue, they have now lost revenue AND a reader/viewer AND potential readers/viewers.
fantastic.
wonder if they thought that out, and I wonder if they would be willing to try it again.
