my general advice has been-
if you're a big mmo guy: give it a shot but be aware that you should by NO means rush to levelcap expecting the only worthwhile content to be hidden in "endgame" material. The object is to do what comes to you and do that in a way you prefer. If you return to low level areas you get down-leveled to match the general level required for the zone. This makes sure nothing turns to paper for you if you spend too much time in a zone and outlevel it, AND makes visiting lower level content (with friends or as you try to do map completion) a bit more rewarding to tackle, even on a maxed out character
if you've tried mmos in the past and aren't quite a fan: give it a shot because it seems to click well with people regardless. It's a bit more open and friendly to new players, and you work with a limited set of skills at any given time so you're not playing the piano with some optimized DPS rotation. (you still kinda play piano with elementalist and engineer)
now that it's technically free, if it's even half tempting just go for it. I'd say try to surpass level ~35 before making too big of a judgement, low level stuff is a bit of a drag on some classes, as a good handful of them require you to unlock traits and secondary skills and junk before they really click with you.
To add to this, this was my first MMO and it just clicked. If this was probably my second MMO it might've not done so well but I enjoyed the game. Now that the game is free I think it's just worth the download (there's a streaming client now so it's even easier) just to try it. I suggest getting a bunch of friends and play, it's waaaay better that way and more fun (especially if they played the game before). I remember there had to be two parties because we couldn't fit everyone in one and we just dicked around in jumping puzzles and exploring Lion's Arch :v: A few months ago me and another friend took a road trip from Lions Arch to the farthest reaching Orr map (can't remember the name off of the top of my head) and it was great fun and he constantly died because he was 20 levels under. Turns out we hit every single event in order, it was worth it because he got all the waypoints ahead of time.
I'm surprised that they made it free to play, especially with this much freedom (no level caps like WoW). I hope this brings new people into the game because the playerbase has matured so much that PvE feels like a wasteland now, it's not as popular as it once was. The community is (most of the time) nice and helps out people with revives and finding that god damn PoI that is underground but you can't find the cave entrance, etc, etc. If anyone has a free account, do they still allow you to read map chat or is it not even there?
Guess I'll wait more until HoT is free.
HoT will probably not be free for even longer than three years. However, Heart of Thorns comes free if you buy the next expansion.
Lol the expansion is no where near the size of gw1 expansions and they're asking full price for it. Now they're trying to justify the price with the removal of f2p features.
it's a nice gesture but a giant middle finger to ppl who have bought the game Imo.
although I'd get the expansion if there is an arah~ type dungeon with a lupi somewhere within.
I bought the game a few weeks ago as a replacement for wow and it bored the hell out of me. Wish this would have been available then so I didn't blow 60 bucks.

My gripe with the expansion is that it's far too expensive for what you seem to get.
Factions and Nightfall were standalone games.
That's arguable. While yes, you didn't need base game for them, they did tie to the same world and account and all that jazz. And cost as much as HoT
Lol the expansion is no where near the size of gw1 expansions and they're asking full price for it.
Given how they're driving how "content dense" the 4 new maps are, I think it's worth saving judgement about that until release. I'd gladly pay full price for it if they all turn out to be as fun as silverwastes and drytop.

the price still feels wonky but keep in mind we're getting:
• 4 maps that are all larger in surface area than previous maps have been
• several (all?) of those maps have 3 biome levels (jungle: roots, floor, canopy) which are all essentially the same surface areas, so now we're getting the equivalent of 7 to 12 new full size maps
• 10 man raid with legendary tier armor rewards, 3 wings in the raid (explorable paths essentially)
• the new 'adventure' system, which is essentially player-triggered event chains that are repeatable and tied to leaderboards for various aspects
• 1 new profession and 9 total profession elite specs, each with a unique armor and weapon skin
• continued personal story
• (upcoming) living story season 3
• 2 new armor sets per weight class
• new legendary weapons and back item
• 60 new item skins, plus the usual cosmetic junk like minis
• 7 mastery tracks with 39 tiers (even more may be revealed soon)
• Guild halls- 2 thematic areas each with 6 core buildings and 175 decor items, including a customizeable PVP arena. New guild armors and weapons. Guild teams + leaderboards for pvp
• PvP league system, 10 new pvp reward tracks
• huge new WvW borderland, utilizing what they've learned in layering content and making things really dense and well laid out
• new fractals system, level cap going from 50-100, new fractal weapons/armor, destabilization mechanic to make high end fractal runs more diverse/challenging
it's not just "oh hey you can walk out into a new map or two"
by all means though, it's worth watching and waiting til people experience it first hand. The beta events have been a seriously cramped portion of a single tier of the first map you visit, there really isn't much the public has seen of its scale yet.

Damn man. I would be keen for the dungeon stuff if its harder than arahzz.
My main issue is that they're asking for a full game price for the expansion itself.
No discount for people who have bought the game already.
They're adding a new region out of the 6 already present. Even if the maps inside are fairly bigger, its still less than half of what is already in the core game.
Would you buy the game again just for the content you have listed? I'm keen to breathe new life into the game but the price man. ;/
So I get a friggin cosmetic for buying this pos on release?
Game has been shit since launch, no reason to return.

I agree with you here, I paid $70AUD for the core game and enjoyed it while it lasted.
Now this expansion is asking for another $70AUD for 1 new region and other bits of content, and I don't care how big this 1 region is compared to the others it is still nothing close to the core game. They are adding 1 profession, the mastery system and the raids. They are adding bits and pieces to content that is already in the base game such as fractals, skins, living story 3(all the rest were free?) and the core story.
But seriously, is it worth the full price again just for addons to content that is already in the core game, and 1 new region and WvW area that in no way could be large enough to have a full games worth of content in it.
There should be discount for people who paid for the core game, or at least lower the price to something that does not meet the price of a full game.
Also at least half of the 'maps' in the core game were just open areas with side stuff that was completely unimportant and took little to no notice of, I cannot see it being any different for this expansion with a lot of the maps just being ignored or useless other than for world completion.

they learned their lesson in dungeon design long ago. Have you run Aetherpath or any of the fractals?

New players get the base game as a bonus. The expansion does not include the price of the original game in any way shape or form. This is a courtesy to get new players to try it out and keep the population going as they release new and interesting content. The thing new players don't get out of the deal, is 3 years of gameplay experiences, especially major open world events that shifted the course of the game and led up to the expansion. To them it's just historical lore
If the time you spent in the core game isn't worth the cost of the game however long you bought it ago, I don't know why you'd consider the expansion interesting for any price

so being one thematic region negates actual content size? What if we got Cantha instead? It'd all be desert but it's what everyone seems to be begging for

I waited til they announced more than just new classes and "oh it's also this one area to the left". At its current state and knowing the base game, hell yeah I'd say the game is worth original price for base PLUS the price of the expansion (even by AUD standards). No subscription for a game seems like it should be standard affair these days, but it really grants it value for your purchase compared to its competitors.
Given the AUD pricing, I'd say for you guys (TJ888 signed up for this?), wait until it releases and see what the playerbase says. I can guarantee for TJ that it won't be wasted space, they've put a lot of effort into efficient cramming, thus the multiple layers per map. This is pretty evident in the WvW related stuff. It's actually smaller than the current borderlands but packed with way more content and explorable space, utilizing subterranean areas and vertical structures. They've pointed out that they really want to avoid what those maps did, where key points are huge, but so is the empty space connecting them.

tbh the collector's edition stuff ($75 instead of $50) is hilariously not worth the $25 extra. The only thing of real value in there is a character slot, which is $10 if you want to pay that up in real money. If you want to get the $100 collectors edition, you get $50 worth of the cosmetic shop currency plus 2 character slots, so for all intents and purposes you got $50 in gems, the expansion for $30, 2 $10 character slots, and a themed skin/title/mini/finisher set for free
but that's only if you like the game that much that you'd be spending 50 bucks on the gemstore. Clearly not you.
The collectors digital perks for the base game also weren't really anything of value, it's just a way to show you support the game I guess.

Thanks for the thorough reply brah. I'll keep an eye out for content and other news and then reviews of the release.
Yeah aetherpath and fractals were cool but I didn't find them as fun as arah. Probably at least half my play time was messing around in there lol
Also, a bow for the Guardian? Lame as hell.
necro looks op af tho
Oh well. I bought it a good year and a half or two ago and got like 200 hours out of it. Got my money's worth a long time ago. v:v:v
