LOL your avatar actually suits this reply quite well.
I think this thread should be locked up before it turns into even more of a shitstorm than it already is if thats possible.

Home defense, some asshole broke in so I aimed my maverick at him and he ran off.
Home defense, some asshole broke in so I pointed my maverick at him and he ran off.
and then everyone stood up and clapped
Home defense, some asshole broke in so I pointed my shotgun at him and he ran off.
Alright, I'll grant you that one. People don't need to own ACRs for no other reason than to shoot targets though.
i think everybody just collectively gave up
I think you are right.
Ban guns, then legitimate gun owners can't protect themselves from people who obtain fire arms illegally as is.
Sure, some stricter laws/screening would be nice, but don't out-right ban guns. That would just be stupid and work against a lot of people.
That and banning AR's because of this shooting doesn't make sense. He was in a crowded movie theater with a 12g shotgun, that's going to do just as much damage as an semi-auto AR.
If anything, MORE people need to carry weapons with them to prevent situations like this. Had anyone in that crowd been armed other than the shooter, they could have stopped him. Between all the confusion, the shooter wouldn't have been able to spot someone pointing a gun at him.
To be fair most of the people on the gun control side (which includes a lot of gun owners) agrees and overall banning of guns is considered a fairly fringe position. The closest we have gotten is banning certain weapons/accessories. Outright banning firearms as a whole is simply not feasible given the current gun culture in America, which can certainly be seen as a negative aspect. Most of this thread has actually been arguing over bizarre hypotheticals, which I think daijitsu was talking about in referring to this as a god forsaken thread.

There is a negative side to this kind of thing though. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1199837
I actually used an AR-15 in defense a few years ago.
Went to bed about 12:30 at night. Summer time, window was open. A short time later I hear some people outside yelling my neighbor's name. I'm about to get up and yell at them to shut up when I look out and see them in my neighbor's porch light. 4 people in the group. 3 of them have large sledge hammers, and the 4th has a large axe. They are tearing the crap out of my neighbor's patio. The one with the axe opens the front door and gets half a step in before my neighbor leans out and knocks them down with a punch to the face.
By this time, I'd pulled on some pants and was dialing 911. I reported what was going on, and grabbed my AR-15 and went outside and confronted them. I got them to drop their weapons and kneel in the front yard until the police arrived a little over 10 minutes later.
No shots fired, nobody dead. The person with the axe had a broken nose.

The funny thing is that the guns that most people want to ban are actually the least deadly statistically. They are used in so little gun crime.
You want to curb gun crime? Get rid of handguns and rifles. However, those are the guns that gun control advocates generally support because they have "other uses besides murder".
Not saying we should ban those either, but those would be the guns that are actually used for murder. It shows a level of inconsistency and fear that you want to ban assault weapons. It shows ignorance because you can't see how someone can legally use them. It is illogical.

Did you need an AR-15 to accomplish that? I didn't say it wasn't possible to defend yourself with one, but was it necessary?
Alright, I'll grant you that one. People don't need to own ACRs for no other reason than to shoot targets though.
I disagree.
People can own any sort of blades (knives, swords, machetes, axes, scythes, etc) or compound bows for what ever purpose they want, and those can be lethal if the wielder so chooses.
Any firearm can be used to just shoot targets, nothing wrong with people having a hobby. I for one love shooting at nothing. It's just fun to shoot weapons, well, for me anyways.
But, I also know to respect the weapon, and I value life, a lot of people that go on shooting spree's are mentally unstable, and that's not the fault of the weapon.
That and speaking of spree shooters, the guy in Aurora had body armor on. An assault rifle would have penetrated that. Now as to why a legitimate owner of an AR would have his AR with him in a movie theater would be beyond me, but AR's have their purpose.
That or just buy an FN 5.7.
Did you need an AR-15 to accomplish that? I didn't say it wasn't possible to defend yourself with one, but was it necessary?
It should almost never be "necessary" to defend yourself with anything. However, as we've found out, the person with the bigger stick is typically better off.
There is a negative side to this kind of thing though. http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1199837
That's a sad story to read, but I don't shoot unless I see a weapon. Pointing a firearm at someone is typically enough to make them either run or surrender, plus, if ever a situation arises that I need to shoot, I intend to keep it non-lethal if I can.
Did you need an AR-15 to accomplish that? I didn't say it wasn't possible to defend yourself with one, but was it necessary?
It was what I had available.

I don't really understand the point of this post because it seems like it's agreeing with me that a total ban on firearms isn't the way to go?
I am subscribed to FPS Russia. I'm one hell of a hypocrite I suppose.
then again I never really understand any of your posts.

The ultimate irony of this thread is that Obama ain't doing shit. He is playing politics and throwing a bone to progressives after a national tragedy and leading into an election. He even said that the existing laws work.
