But the game is also facing a somewhat less-high-profile claim of bad behavior from Cameron Booth, a graphic designer who created and posted a redesigned "Boston MBTA Map" back in 2012 in response to what he felt were shortcomings in the real thing. I don't really get the whole idea of redesigning mass transit maps as a hobby but it's apparently pretty good as these things go and he's actually received several very positive comments about it on his blog.
Somehow, that map ended up in The Last Of Us without his knowledge or permission, a fact brought to Booth's attention on Twitter a few days ago that left him "fucking furious," as he put it on the Transit Maps tumblr.

Well this one actually has some validity to it because that genuinely is a rip-off of the guy's work. Still, it looks like this issue has already been resolved.

He still hasn't gotten a response, it seems to be a case of "OC DO NOT STEAL"

I understand he wants credit but he was also talking about a licencing deal. It's a redesign of a design that is public domain. I hope Naughty Dog didn't cave into this guy.
They also used the WWE survivor series logo on a poster.

How do we know it's public domain?
He already has been in contact with Naughty Dog and they have worked something out over the phone:
UPDATE, TUESDAY JUNE 25, 1:00pm: I’ve just spoken with Naughty Dog over the phone in a very constructive conversation. Can’t say more at the moment, but it seems as if matters will be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction shortly. I can say that they do acknowledge their error in using my map and were very apologetic for it. I likewise apologised for my initial vitriolic post. A lot of mutual respect for each other’s creative work.
It’s been a hell of a last couple of days: thanks for the support from many, and the interesting and varied comments from most.
Hopefully, back to regularly scheduled Transit Maps content soon!
Bit of a non-story at this point.
I'd figure this would further legitimize his redesign. If anything, it is good publicity.
-snip-
Turns out he also did the one for here.
Why would they need his permission? It's a map. Heck he probably copied someone else's design since the map for the train line here looks just like it, except we've had it since like 2000.
Because having your work ripped off the internet without permission and shoved into something else where you are given no credit whatsoever is kind of shitty?
At this point I'd say the shittiest thing that could happen to him would be for Naughty dog to remove all traces of his content from the game and have his efforts fade into obscurity.

you are literally saying he doesn't deserve rights to his own work

It happens because often it's hard to get shit like maps without paying a shitton of money for licensing, so you find "remakes" that don't have any actual legal backing (No copyright registration or shit), so you don't contact the author (Because once they hear you're from a big company they'll make you pay $$$$) and just use it.
If people got over the "OMG SOMEBODY COPIED MY STUF!!!111" shit these days it'd be better off.
Also: I do a good amount of graphic design shit, and I am perfectly comfortable releasing all of it under the "kopimi" license: because I'm not a dick.

why does wanting to protect your own work make you a dick
Like I said in TLOU thread the guy is quite a moron for crying like a huge baby in public without even contacting Naughty Dog first, who seem to be quite cool about the matter. It'd be another story if he contacted ND first and they still denied to pay him for his work but that's not the case.

All transit maps are government issued and therefore public domain.

It's sort of a patent wars. Imagine you created a device which could cure cancer, then posted the schematics online. A day later someone rubs up the schematics, builds it with a bit of additions (or you know what, fuck it, no additions at all), patents it then sells for a fuckload of money and becomes a multibillionaire. Don't fucking tell me you wouldn't want some credit for that.

It might burst the bubble of what people think on how designers work on games.
But it's the truth and not uncommon.
wow the environment artist obviously just googled "boston transit map" and used the first thing that came up. it's not a big deal. yeh it's pretty poor due diligence on the side of the artist but i'm not surprised he made that mistake
so funny seeing this guy posting on tumblr of all places about his lack of payment for this. mate, you design transit maps as a hobby. i guess it's his hobby and it's important to him but where was he going to make any money from the map? and has he lost any money because naughty dog googled it and used it as an environment texture?
glad it's been resolved peacefully though
I just spent all night collecting all 100 power cells in Jak and Daxter one to find out what's behind the door.
Naughty Dog sure as fuck ripped me off.
