Please, who the fuck would invade the US. This isn't 1780 anymore. The argument that a country needs a military to defend itself is outdated and bogus, not to mention blatant propagandist nonsense. The less soldiers there are in the world, the closer we'd be to world peace.
How can you possibly think this? You know there are forces in the world who heavily oppose the modern western way of life. You are aware of countries like North Korea, and organizations such as Al-Quaeda who dream of nothing more than the obliteration of our society. You are weak and naive, believing that world ills can be solved with "love your enemy".
http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org what were you saying?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrior This pretty much sums it.
aircraft carriers being used for relief efforts? are you implying that we could not just build actual fucking relief vehicles instead of aircraft carriers? are you disregarding all the other non-military equipment that was being used for relief efforts? this isn't really much of an argument and you know it
Fact: any good military force has a good logistical system to back it up. They can get much faster to a disaster zone than any civilian relief force. Not to mention that soldiers can keep civilians safe AND help with the relief effort. Nowadays, the military exists to protect and serve their country, their interests and their citizens.
My Dad always told me stories about his Navy days, how he saw action in the Falklands, how it went after the wars. And military service runs in my family. Hell, I'm named after a military unit. Every man on my dad's side of the family has served in the Army at some point or the other, I was the first one to serve in the US Army.
I was about to say he looked up to a parent which is probably the most typical method for any doctrine or agenda to be imbedded within someone elses mind, starting from when they were young - more so than any show on TV.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrior This pretty much sums it.
"The term "warrior" is still sometimes used, anachronistically, to refer to professional soldiers or mercenaries. Due to the heroic connotations of the term "warrior", this metaphor is especially popular in publications advocating or recruiting for a country's military." yeaaa
I've personally seen warrior used as antagonistic term.
yea, but in the majority of contexts it isn't and pretending that there's a divide like you layed out in your first post is just silly.
yea, but in the majority of contexts it isn't and pretending that there's a divide like you layed out in your first post is just silly.
Well what do you call a soldier gunman who wants to kill you? No, not enemy, not a warrior, what? Neither of us is looking smart on this one.
Well what do you call a soldier gunman who wants to kill you? No, not enemy, not a warrior, what? Neither of us is looking smart on this one.
enemy, hostile, tango, opfor, bad guy
Well what do you call a soldier gunman who wants to kill you? No, not enemy, not a warrior, what? Neither of us is looking smart on this one.
Enemy soldier or enemy combatant, usually.
Well what do you call a soldier gunman who wants to kill you? No, not enemy, not a warrior, what? Neither of us is looking smart on this one.
A target.
So what is the difference between a soldier and a warrior? Is warrior professional-er than a soldier?
So what is the difference between a soldier and a warrior? Is warrior professional-er than a soldier?
Warrior often coincides with offensive, while soldier is normally used to be defensive.
So what is the difference between a soldier and a warrior? Is warrior professional-er than a soldier?
warrior is an older, more generic term for someone who fights soldier is more modern, from the times of conscripted/organized armies, etc.
Thats great for the kid but its a bit worrying kids dream of growing up to be soldiers
You must have had a terrible time as a child if half your time wasn't taken up pretending you were a soldier or shooting bad guys of some kind.
You must have had a terrible time as a child if half your time wasn't taken up pretending you were a soldier or shooting bad guys of some kind.
you were obviously just part of the system duh
Everybody knows G.I. Joe was about a guy who every episode put those nasty villiagers in their place.
what's with these europeans dissing the us army
let me guess, war is 'human nature' no, but it's a step in the right direction. what kind of retarded logic is that? we shouldn't have abolished slavery because africans were enslaving their own anyhow so it wouldn't have made a difference? i'm astonished at the amount of short-sighted lazy cynics that always go on how 'no wars would be great but it's impossible!!" how the fuck is it impossible. if you truly wanted it, then it wouldn't even be an issue. the only difference is the fact that it actually takes a spec of effort to achieve something of this sort. we have no 'war' gene. we have no 'violence' gene. if we manage to overcome primal instincts on a daily-basis we can sure as hell overcome this retarded imaginary war instinct you people keep blathering on about.
it's like you have no idea about how living beings gather. of course there's no "war" gene(which you're arguing yourself over), but you're sheltered or insanely stupid to think all beings are passive. let's take a look at a nonhuman community- say wolf packs. each one has a leader who asserts himself over the others with force. then when one wolf pack enters another's territory, the original ones attack. these aren't the only animals that have this sort of behavior complex. combine this instinct with human progress and you have war. of course this sucks, but it's the reality that you're afraid of. we've been doing the same thing for thousands of years and a "spec of effort" won't change it.
what's with these europeans dissing the us army
WHERE?! Oh wait, no one was. This makes a change from Al qaeda helping all them small afghan boys fufill their dreams of becoming suicide bombers lately. It would be nice to keep up!
The less soldiers there are in the world, the closer we'd be to world peace.
as long as there are opposing ideals there will be conflict (of varying scale) check it out - you're in a verbal conflict right now!
I know I am late, sorry to disappoint. Great that this kid was able to fulfill his dream. I love it when I see units that go along with doing that sort of thing. Hell, I don't really think that any units would turn down a request like that. It makes everything so much more worth it. Nice choice of units, too. Can't go wrong with the Cav. Surprised they didn't give him a cav hat.
Skeea incoming
ah, there you are.
You must have had a terrible time as a child if half your time wasn't taken up pretending you were a soldier or shooting bad guys of some kind.
no i had a very healthy and well adjusted childhood that didn't involve my family indoctrinating me from birth to believe my country was the greatest on earth and it would be honorable for me to join the military when i grow up so i could carry out the will of my nation's military leaders without question
Wow, the thread got derailed fast. The kid got to live his dream of being a soldier and only two posts in Kopimi feels that the kid is wrong for idolizing a profession. Do you go around Christmas time telling kids that Santa doesn't exist?
lol this is exactly the stupid bullshit i'm talking about even after stating multiple times i'm happy for the kid and never once directly targeting the kid but rather complaining about a culture that unconditionally idolizes and glorifies warfare, you're still so defensive and hypersensitive about your military culture that you instantly twist my words into "fuck that little kid for wanting to be a soldier what a piece of shit"
You are very delusional if you think this is a USA thing or that is has anything to do with culture. I am in Portugal and since I was a kid I've looked up to soldiers, and not from the TV or any other silly thing you may come up with. As a kid, my dad used to tell me stories of when he was in the military. His parachuting experiences, what he went through on recruit, really all kinds of things. He never shot anyone and that certainly didn't make his military experience any less complete. As a kid, while I did know that the military shot people, obviously, for me that wasn't the essence of it. It was more the modus operandi, and it still is. The reason most kids like soldiers and the military or whatever is less because "lol shooting people" and more because they find camo, jets, helis, tanks, ships, etc. cool. Which is normal for kids. And not just kids either.
i never said nor implied it was limited to america why do kids find camo/jets/helis/tanks/ships cool? i'm pretty sure we aren't biologically predisposed to find artificial war machinery cool, so maybe it has to do with a culture that is constantly glorifying and praising those machines and the people who pilot them?
MERYLLLLLLLLLLL
whole point of a US soldier is to go in to other countries with far bigger guns than any of the natives and shoot people a police officer protects people and a fireman saves them, a soldier shoots them.
Your brain cell dystrophy is worse than this kid's muscular dystrophy
Even when the kid is not in a motorized vehicle, he still uses wheels to get around. The epitome of cavalry
This thread so far just seems to prove FP worships soldiers as the perfect human beings. That and scientists. Also in terms of the news story itself, it's a nice gesture, but I can't help but think that this is basically a PR move above all else.
