Hahah it's nothing to do with it, nice post though you gave me a chuckle.
I was talking to my instructors and some other senior guys about it, it is pretty much a surface submarine. It operates and has the same systems of a submarine with the exception of the reactor. Wouldn't be surprised if most of the crew go most of their time underway without seeing sunlight.

Defensive tools for your nation and or allies is far from a waste of money
They specialize in different areas, the T45 is primarily focused on anti-air and anti-submarine operations, this thing is more for ship to ship and land bombardment.
T45 is primarily anti-air. Has very little in the way of ASW capability - some decoy stuff and the onboard helo I suppose, but T23 is the primary ASW platform in the RN.

I really doubt this was necessary though considering what we already have, especially in relation to other countries.

We maintain an edge by staying ahead. Simple as that.

The whole point of it is to stay on the ball so that if we ever have to use these ships against a Highly Advance Enemy of sorts we are not put at an disadvantage.

Technological advancement bro, we wouldn't be worth anything today if we still held onto our Battleships past the 90's for example.

just because you don't plan on going to war with other civilizations doesn't mean you should forsake rifling on the tech tree

Part of the US's strategic edge comes from the fact that they're so significantly ahead of other countries in these areas. Stopping allows that edge to be ceded. The real focus should be on rooting out corruption and graft, not stopping projects.

It truly does look quite alien.
Being grey and with all the triangles and stuff, it reminds me of the Star Destroyer.
Compared to a type-45, how do they compare?
Well a Type 45 is roughly analogous to a Burke. But neither is as good as a zumwalt in land attack as the Rocket assisted 155mm shells greatly outrange a burkes 5" for a fraction of the cost of a 1.5 mil TLAM of that makes sense.
A Burke is a excellent ASW and AAW platform but it is lacking in GFS (Gun Fire Support) and anti-ship capability is nearly non-existant as harpoon is awful and being phased out. Infact Flight IIa Burkes can't even carry RGM-84 Harpoon and itself can't hold a candle to modern AShM such as Sunburn or Sizzler fielded by the Russians.
Going back to GFS The Burke has a MK 45 127mm main gun with a 9 nm range and a RGM-109 Tomahawk with a range of 1,000~ nm. The Zumwalt will have two 155mm main guns with an astonishing 59 nm (109km) range. At 10+ rounds per minute minimum it can do the job of a large Marine battery at a much longer distance in addition to the Tomahawks already carried.

Don't cut yourself on that edge bro.
I've been onboard this ship, got a tour all around it. My dad's been working on it for the past two or so years. Wish I knew more about ships so I could have appreciated it on a more technical level, but even from a layman perspective, it's really something else to see up close.

Is it all futuristic and fancy on the inside or is it a typical warship affair: pipes fucking everywhere?

Pipes errywhere
Granted a lot of the stuff was just because they were working on it. cables running all around, tarps put up everywhere, that sorta stuff.

You should see the inside of a submarine. We use cardboard to create storage areas within the labyrinth of pipes everywhere.
