I am of the mindset that a debate, whether it be on public tv or here on the internet, is not for the debaters to win but for the audience. It's often the ones not participating that are open to one direction or the other and it's up to the people debating to present their side as the correct one, even if their opponent stonewalls constantly in changing their mind. I debate to change the minds of the lurkers here on FP. Whether I do or not, I don't know but would like to think I do. This guy Roy Moore is a racist fuckhead and he will not ever change that for whatever few years on this earth he has. It's our job not to get him to change his mind but to challenge his beliefs in front of others so they may see how stupid, asinine and backward his thinking is.
That's how I've been feeling about it for a while now. People can be very, very emotional. You can convince them, but if they already put you in a box - e.g. you make an offhand comment about how no one could possibly dislike burgers in front of a staunch vegan activist. Maybe you just really like burgers, but if they ascribe to you the image of the sorta guy that goes out of his way to get offended at vegans who don't affect him - you probably won't get through to them But if you're talking to a friend, someone who has other things to respect you for, and isn't judging you entirely on what views you have (or, that they believe you have) like a stranger on the internet would, then it's much, much easier. That's why I think FP is a shit platform for convincing people, there's too much detachment. I've convinced others here, and I've had my own mind changed as well, so it's not impossible, but it takes a lot more humility, respect and self-awareness than we can expect ourselves to have most of the time.
Some people don't even want to see you as anything else once they've made their assumptions up here. Sometimes I've seen it be disturbingly sinister. It's why I prefer to pretend most interactions on here are like a new one, and why I can see a benefit of an anonymous board

Maybe but that's not how it always is. I see it more as adhom usually. A way to avoid someone's words on the basis of words on other unrelated topics [editline]11th December 2017[/editline] I at least like to keep those thoughts to myself and address them at face value when it comes to these things, especially since not everyone even knows
I mean I guess I could see how slavery would be pretty great in a way of increasing productivity and profit for free If you're willing to overlook mass suffering and have no ethics whatsoever But I guess that's what the republican mindset is all about
Why is it that they always want to live in the past? Why is it that they can't just take specific ideals that they support (and aren't afraid to openly support), and say they want to work to reintegrate them into society. You're living in the past GOP, quit living in the past!

I'm honestly not surprised about this. He would be pro-slavery, seeing all his other bizarre values.
