It's symptomatic of the big problem with the movie in general. The original Ghostbusters was a comedy, but the characters treated the world they lived in seriously. They acted like what was happening mattered.

Here, the characters don't really care, the movie doesn't really care, so why should we? Their attempts to get the audience to care about the characters don't hold any sort of weight when all they do is wryly comment on whatever happens.

One of the women was fired because of her two "friends", but do her two friends care? No, it's just an opportunity for more one liners.

And that would be fine, if the one liners were actually funny.
