For the people installing freeplay mods, it is the same thing but improved upon because it includes quests/NPCs/a-Life in addition to optional multiplayer.
You are right, it won't be modded but since it is a MMO it will be treated like a MMO and they'll be listening to feedback and updating the game. There's upsides and downsides to this but at least this will run on a decent engine.

The project wasn't worth showing off to the public. They started lying about where they were located, who they were and various inaccuracies. It was a cluster fuck that you needed to follow to fully understand.
If they had something of value, I'm sure it would still be going on but honestly they loaded some assets from other games into the Unity editor, loaded it up and said "this is our game".

At first with Areal no one was sure if they were who they said they were, but that wasn't the only problem. The Kickstarter had a really low funding goal for this sort of game, they used screenshots that weren't theirs, they showed concept art that wasn't theirs, they said everyone who didn't like the game was a troll, they used that they somehow helped with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as their main reason to back them rather than showing off their game itself. Their game was non-existant in the sense we saw pretty much none of it. They had a terribly made site. They claimed Putin had liked their game. They avoided answering important questions. Their kickstarter was supposedly linked to someone who had created another project which had then vanished completely and had similar problems and when asked about this they pretty much said they didn't really care and weren't going to clarify. Even if it was real, would you trust them to make the game? If it weren't for the fact that some of them have somehow worked on S.T.A.L.K.E.R., what would they have done to give you any confidence in them? They shouldn't be backed just because they are a few ex-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. devs, you should determine if they shold be backed based on what they show and what they are like - in this case and with Areal, there is not anything at all that suggests they can make this game.

They literally just said in their FAQ that they can use the name STALKER because "stalker is a common word" and they trademarked "stalker apocalypse" so therefore they can "do what they want"
If this actually becomes a thing (it won't) it will get sued out of high heaven by the actual copyright owners of STALKER
They are doing this because they think they can trick people to give them money this time if they actually "use" the IP they want to be associated with as if its their own property, even if they say "well I don't mean its ACTUALLY a stalker game!". This is basically copyright violation 101 and it would never hold up in a court
Of course this is assuming they actually try and make something out of this game that isn't total "we skipped town once we got your money" trash. Because that's what they totally are doing, if it wasn't obvious from them using a super obscure funding site that probably lets them keep all money donated to them in a 90 day period.

They were ex stalker devs in the same way that the receptionist for Valve is Gabe Newell
And the project was a total scam where they stole advertising/assets from other games and concept art to try and make as much money as possible from being associated with with the Stalker IP with as little effort as possible
I.E. the kind of developers/people who worked for GSC that didn't have the skills and/or couldn't actually get real jobs after STALKER was shut down, so they run to crowdfunding to try and scam people of their money
