Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
If you know your shit you can pick up a windows 7 build for about $400-$600, that's pretty cheap
sry we're not wasting time supporting your decrepit OS just because you don't want to upgrade
Its not like its a choice.
Its not like its a choice.
your life is so hard [editline]1[/editline] you can choose to get a minimum wage job and afford to buy a decent computer in a month
Oh, I get it now. DX11 was backwards compatible with WDDM 1.0, I guess whatever 11.1/12 has in store just won't be compatible with WDDM 1.1.
Its not like its a choice.
so you have money to be buying new games that you're worried you won't be able to run but not able to upgrade your computer (which i bet can run 7 anyway)??
you can choose to get a minimum wage job and afford to buy a decent computer in a month
If only it was really a choice. I can't find a job in my area for half a year now, any job.
so you have money to be buying new games that you're worried you won't be able to run but not able to upgrade your computer (which i bet can run 7 anyway)??
I don't think he ever said he was buying new games.
DirectX is a pile of proprietary rubbish. I don't care if it's easier for developers, it's locked down.
I don't think he ever said he was buying new games.
if he isn't buying them why is he worried about them using technology he can't use though?
If only it was really a choice. My Brother mows my grandparents lawn and gets a lot of money out of it, so if its working for him, it'll be working for you.
DirectX is a pile of proprietary rubbish. I don't care if it's easier for developers, it's locked down.
best part is that it's not easier for developers its just overall bad.
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
If your computer can't even run 7 you should probably put some kind of linux distribution on there at least then it'll be updated
if he isn't buying them why is he worried about them using technology he can't use though?
He was just explaining to someone why they'd still be using XP. [editline]w[/editline] Ah, just re-read it. He essentially asked for support in explaining that, missed that bit.
If your computer can't even run 7 you should probably put some kind of linux distribution on there at least then it'll be updated
I can run 7 on midrange hardware from 2006
Because some people still use it due to their computers being incompatible with 7 due to age. Like me :(
Oh, by the way, if you're feeling adventurous, you could try Linux, through dual-booting or running it off of a USB drive. Hell, you could even run it off the disc you burn it on. Lubuntu would be great for that computer if you don't have much, or any experience with Linux. I'm using a Dell laptop from '05 with a 1.4ghz Celeron M and 1GB ram, it's surprisingly snappy and is actually about the same speed, maybe minimally faster, than my Vista desktop with mid-high end 2007 parts when running a low amount of applications. I can't play too many games, but it does what it does very well.
This is why Valve's push for Linux is important, MS has been public enemy # 1 of PC gaming for a long time, just cause they don't outright attack PC gaming doesn't mean they aren't responsible for many of its downfalls
yeah but then when everything is converted to touch (which it will), all of a sudden Windows 8 will seem like the most compatible OS.
that's the game developer's faults, DX11 is much more efficient, and developers who use it right (like the Need for Speed developers) get 300% more performance basically the Vista fiasco made developers take any DX version past 9 as a gimmick, when DX9 is actually hurting PC gaming performance wise
Here's the article for the people that haven't seen it.
yeah but then when everything is converted to touch (which it will), all of a sudden Windows 8 will seem like the most compatible OS.
I know it's probably inevitable, but I don't want this to ever happen. For now I don't see touch as much more than a gimmick when it comes to gaming. Same goes for things like the kinect. Ofcourse they're going to get more FPS on a more updated set of API's. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline] I remain persistent on the fact that DirectX only exists so Microsoft could lock down developers to the platform they have control over :/

Go back to DD Stormcharger. You don't belong here.

People seem to think new API=harder to run and all, no they are made for better performance on newer hardware. I would love for OpenGL to overtake DX
Go back to DD Stormcharger. You don't belong here.
Mind saying why I don't belong here?
So apparently a developer at DICE likes DX11.1 allot, and requested some of the changes DX11.1 has His tweet about it: https://twitter.com/repi/status/114017754201325569
If Mirrors Edge 2 was a Windows 8 exclusive game I would fucking kill myself. Edited: Lets put that on the record for possible An Hero status.
:toxx: Ontopic. I really, really hope this doesn't happen. DX9->10 was a huge leap, but i just don't see this with 11. likewise i really do not want to update OS. maybe with the next OS iteration.
Any sane pc developer who wants to have a market won't use this, exclusively.
XP is completely dead why should they support such an old OS?
Uhhh... Halo 2 came out for PC the same time Vista did. XP was certainly not dead the day of the Vista launch.

I'm still on a fucking Pentium III, bitches.

OpenGL is getting better but man its had such a screwed-up-the-fucking-ass-so-badly planning and development at points. Maybe next time I might be convinced OpenGL is "better" than DirectX, but at the moment the most compatible version of OpenGL is definitely not better. It doesn't even compare to some of the things DirectX 11 has. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline]
Go back to DD Stormcharger. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline]
I remain persistent on the fact that DirectX only exists so Microsoft could lock down developers to the platform they have control over :/
Pretty damn good rendering platform to be locked down onto tbh. [editline]12th November 2012[/editline] Im not saying OPENGL IS HORRID ASGHAHSG DIRECTX MASTER RACE, but ever since DX reached 10/11, it seems to be miles ahead of anything OpenGL does. OpenGL is catching up however, and I look forward to the minute it does.
