Steam preparing to sell non-gaming related software?

The only bad thing about steam is the program itself, because it has some bugs that are really annoying. For example, when you open the steam window and immediately double click on any game, it doesn't start the one you clicked on, but a game 3 or 4 items further down the list. This ALWAYS annoys the hell out of me.
And the fact that the builtin browser doesn't automatically log into my steam account, but has to load 2 minutes before it does so.
And it's been like this for years.
They got to get their shit together on that part of steam, otherwise it's a brilliant platform and I really would like to see them expand further into the market, especially now that they're multiplatform with windows, mac, playstation 3 and soon linux support.
A Steam Os?
Come to think of it, I would be a lot more likely to actually buy my software if it was on steam. This way whenever I reformat or get a new system, everything could just be on one big hub.
Can't wait to show Peachtree to my accounting friends. They're going to be over at my house every day.
Man I wish I could have the old design back, just for nostalgia.

Adobe or Autodesk aren't going to suddenly slash their prices just because they can sell their stuff on steam.
Well they are selling Indie Game: The Movie and it has audio commentary. Steam would make a nice alternative to iTunes.
imagine if they made a music service that let you play and control your music in the in-game overlay, that would be amazing
I'd love Steam being all big, but first I'd rather have steam working fluently and not bloating around.
Like 1/4 of the users have the same problem. It tends to freeze a lot.
It also would need some optimization for people with slower Internet speeds.
I'd love to buy WinRAR or Total Commander from Steam, but imagine having to start Steam up every time you want to use those programs.
:v:

It'd more likely kill it altogether, while Gaben and friends swim in yet another dozen money pools.
As long as I do not need to open Steam everytime I want to use the software or as long as I don't need to prepare Steam for being used offline every single time I go somewhere without internet...
It'd still be better to buy programs from Adobe etc elsewhere if you're a student though to get all the educational benefits. I don't see Steam implementing those soon as it would be a huge pain in the ass to make deals with all the educational networks in every single country.

Maybe they can make a Steam background service for programs like this? I know Adobe has like what, 3 services in the background just for one product?
Steam should sell movies, buy a movie, download it whenever you want and delete it when you are finished. Streaming would also be possible. The movies would be in a library like your games are.

Can't see any problem with that.

they already do
Am I the only one who wants to hug every Valve employee for being so goddamn awesome?

Photoshop in my Steam sounds sexy
This could be amazing, imagine if steam goes so big that it's pre-shipped with every copy of windows.
Still won't be enough to sell Windows 8 and that shitty Metro format.
ITT: Steam replaces every single software possible in the world

Why would you ever close Steam
I'd love if Steam became "the" place for all software, even free software. Easy to update, easy to access and you always know that the software can be trusted. Also if they started a music/movie service that would be awesome, but I think that's kind of unrealistic. I mean, there are already big established services in that area.
If valve got into the music field if anything they would need to compete with iTunes and Spotify, but you know - steam sales are best sales

Even if Photoshop were to come to Steam, a student license for just Photoshop would cost around $100.
The closest thing to Photoshop coming to Steam would probably be Elements and that's it, and crap.
What?
I don't understand the disagrees, there are at least 2 movies on Steam already.
It's nice to know that everything you buy follows you via your Steam account, forever.
and if you scam someone out of a hat you lose it all
It would be awesome if they started doing online education and focus on how create games and stuff.
Well they've called themselves "Valve Software" a number of times, I suppose it was inevitable.
Games are software too.

As much as I love Valve and Steam, I don't want them to have that much power. I also like to see places like gog.com do well.

Although I kind of wish there were still those free-to-play board games you could play in chat. :(
I still use the old IM sound effect for my Steam. I just hate that new bubbly sound.

Unfortunately, I don't see that happening any time soon. If anything, Steam is simply going to open a platform for indie app developers. Anything else is too difficult to licence.
Movie studios have an extreme phobia of digital downloads/streaming. Sure, Valve has more startup capital for licencing than companies like Netflix, but many movies that are available for streaming/downloading in the US are simply unavailable for licencing in any other country like Canada.
Finally, Windows will have a package manager.
