imagine if they made a music service that let you play and control your music in the in-game overlay, that would be amazing
It'd be cool if it were something akin to Spotify as well.
All I can think of is Steam Achievements in AutoCAD.
"You have created a cylinder!"
I would hate to have to load steam everytime I want to use my editing software. It's better if I can just click on my start menu and launch it from there. If this ever does happen, they need to make it a shop independent from steam all together, I already hate the fact that I need to be logged into steam just to play my games.
I won't lie though, it's a great service with all the free updates and stuff.
Adobe or Autodesk aren't going to suddenly slash their prices just because they can sell their stuff on steam.
Who knows, if the software was there they'd have a way to distribute information about sales to the four million currently connected users and the tens of millions of active ones, instead of just having a banner on their website that people will hardly notice

Now imagine this thread if EA said Origin is going to host software.
I wouldn't count on it. Microsoft loves hogging all the money, it'd be a surprise if they didn't throw their own digital distribution crap on the next versions of Windows.
The Zune store? V:v:V
This could be amazing, imagine if steam goes so big that it's pre-shipped with every copy of windows.
I'd rather much prefer a Steam OS.
Anyway, I can see loads of companies jumping at this to get their software on steam since the sales will boost their profits.
"Pre-Order Microsoft Office 2014, and get a unique 'Clippy' item in Team Fortress 2!"
Oh cool this means that more people will be using Steam and that means it'll be even slower and the servers will go down even more!
Just want I wanted!
"The toys are all mine! no-one else can play with them!"
Now imagine this thread if EA said Origin is going to host software.
It would be horrible.
"Buy EA OS for 500 dollars, get the taskbar DLC for only 75 dollars, Also available is the task manager addon for 250 dollars! Want flash games and youtube to run? It only will cost you 100 dollars to buy flash support!"
Licensing will be really really weird. But if Steam can give huge discounts on expensive software, by all means proceed.

1:00 'Gaming has been limited to consoles.' Haha.
I feel lame for how excited I got seeing the 'Accounting' tab.
It would be cool if they started implementing Steam in schools/workplaces as a result. Imagine how quickly games will download.

If you believe that just go hang yourself. You clearly aren't capable of rational thought in such a simple circumstance.
If it's hyperbole, just stop posting. This forum has enough shitheels with EA hate boners going on about it every thread.
If it's a joke, it's a pretty shit joke. Perhaps if EA were actually scamming the fuck out of us it'd be funny, but compared to some other companies, and some of their history, they're pretty half-decent right now.
This shit stopped being funny when it started.
Not so sure about this. I wouldn't Steam to get endlessly diluted until it becomes amazon or something. I wouldn't mind seing Valve develop more services, but don't merge it all with Steam. I've invested a lot of money into my account.

I was mocking everyone in the thread with that post, doofus.

I always look forward to your posts in thread, they're worded so magnificantly. It's like we're the only people on FP without gigantic, throbbing, anti-EA boners.

I gave up trying to actually compromise with half the people who are against EA right now. I think it helped my posts a lot to be honest.
What a strange image in the source. Before looking at it closely, I thought what looks like the black bundle of thread in the lower left hand corner was the top of a lady with black hair and sunglasses talking on a phone.
imagine the summer sales,
Animator Bundle (3DSMax + Maya), 50% off, now just 325$

I'm pretty sure he's trying to say that instead of trying to attract more people, Valve should upgrade Steam's servers to make them more stable so they will die less often.
September 5th is the day!

STEAM EXPANDS BEYOND GAMES
Launch Set of "Software" Titles Coming Sept 5
Aug 8, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the first set of Software titles are heading to Steam, marking a major expansion to the platform most commonly known as a leading destination for PC and Mac games.
The Software titles coming to Steam range from creativity to productivity. Many of the launch titles will take advantage of popular Steamworks features, such as easy installation, automatic updating, and the ability to save your work to your personal Steam Cloud space so your files may travel with you.
More Software titles will be added in an ongoing fashion following the September 5th launch, and developers will be welcome to submit Software titles via Steam Greenlight.
"The 40 million gamers frequenting Steam are interested in more than playing games," said Mark Richardson at Valve. "They have told us they would like to have more of their software on Steam, so this expansion is in response to those customer requests."
