Just think of the damage someone could do just waving that thing along a highstreet, hundreds of people spontaniously combusting and running around on fire screaming "I'M BLIND! I'M FUCKING BLIND!"
I'm so fucking buying one.
This is truly terrifying. These are way more dangerous than guns, this thing could light your house up like a Christmas tree in less than 5 seconds.
This is potentially more dangerous than a gun. It's silent and does not leave a trace that can be analysed to find the owner.
the military uses them already
FYI it's spelled Lightsaber because it's a proper noun.
Yes I am bringing up this argument.
it's not a proper noun, it's the common name of a beam weapon
just like how you don't say Sword

no it couldn't
it might make a warm spot but it couldn't ignite compacted wood
Why would the company in their right mind make AND sell this fucking thing.
Not only can it permanently blind you but it can cause cancer. I am all for banning this and having the creators arrested.

Good point
Say if you were to shine it in your eye or on your skin, would it be concentrated enough to destroy the nerve ending before you feel it? Obviously there would be pain from the surrounding area.
THIS IS A DIODE-BASED LASER, NO IR!
I've been following these diodes since they first started showing up, around June 1st. Most of the early work was done on http://laserpointerforums.com/ .
These 445nm laser diodes(awesome blue color) can go up to 1 Watt of power, and were first discovered in Casio laser/led projectors. Those projectors have 24(!!!!) of these in them. At $800 per projector, that comes down to $33 per diode(before Casio mass-porduced them, it was $3k+ per diode).
Wickedlasers is doing something very stupid with them, making them easily available to the public. I'm fine with people selling just diodes, you would need a bit of knowledge to build a working laser with it, and you would understand the danger. But selling a completed 1Watt laser for $200 is crazy. Say goodbye to the laser hobby.
Just because they're diode based doesn't mean they're IR-free, Wicked at one point had to (by law) put IR filters into their green lasers because they produced mass amounts of IR even though they were diode based.
You're right about this being a bad choice, though, because if people without the proper license get a hold of these it could mean a lot more regulations and restrictions placed on lasers.
Just another reason not to go outside.
Take that, parents. :smug:
"But dad, I can't go outside or someone might blind me with a lightsaber! :saddowns:"
... I don't think my parents would buy that :v:
Green laser pointers currently are DPSS, they use an IR diode and crystals to make green light. That is why they're required to put an IR filter on it, because not all IR light gets transformed into green light. WL uses the words "green diode", but I can assure you it's DPSS.
This laser in question produces only blue light at 445nm, no other light is emitted(not even IR).
Ah, ok, I assumed the projector diodes used crystals too but that wouldn't make much sense seeing as how they're all pretty much the same power.
The laser itself is fucking awesome, but imo it should be banned. Those lasers don't exactly attract the right people IE (15 year old kids with nothing better to do). Also damn thats pretty impressive it can burn the skin immediately on contact? Imagine what they can do in 20 years, maybe by then we will already have ones that can make people combust :(
We have 10W lasers in the laboratory and someone got a serious burn mark from it as he forgot that it's on due to protective glasses.
This is not good.
[editline]11:05AM[/editline]
While this is pretty impressive, it's still bullshit. You can't hold a laser steady enough at those distances.
Handheld it probably wouldn't even stay for 1/1000th of a second, given this distance.
Sight is not the problem here. Not for planes. Instruments and damage to the eyes however is.
If you read the image you would know that they flash the laser in simulations with pilots. Its only fully on here to get a picture of it.
this shouldn't be banned. just kept in laboritorys to study
I bought one. Am waiting for it to arrive.
Make a thread about it.
No seriously, when it arrives, tell us how it is.
I wonder if the make prescription sunglasses of the "laser protection" variety.
Can't wait to see the "Deathstar" model if they ever make one.
Burn my neighbors house and dog to the ground. :c00lbert:
This should be banned from the General Public and only be obtainable through a proper license that is be very difficult to achieve. Also the punishment for illegally owning one should be a very strict and serious punishment, like 5 years in jail for instance, or a huge fine, or both.
Man if I get blinded by someone with this I am suing them for every penny they have.
That is if I can find them.
People are stupid. They shouldn't be allowed stuff that can be dangerous to other people unless they have proof they aren't a danger to society with anything more hazardous than a butter knife.
I want one.
Wicked lasers make some awesome shit.
Wicked lasers make some awesome shit.
lol no they don't
They overprice everything
How is this even legal to sell in the US? Or is it UK only?
Because in the US we now have a law that states you're no longer allowed to purchase a laser >5mW.

A tracking system and a large spinning mirror...
Oh god, I need to buy some shades.
This shit is horrible.

UK only? Yeah right, our laws are just as strict (if not more so, though I could be wrong) on lasers. It's a good thing too in my opinion with the amount of retard chavs that walk around shining the shitty low power ones we are allowed. That is why I think these would be a problem if anyone like them got hold of these.
this looks awesome, hope they make a dual one
In other news: Sale of Blue tinted sunglasses sky rockets.
Real lasers that resemble Star Wars lightsabres, that can burn skin, cut through plastic and ignite matches - yes please.
inb4 banned to sell it.
Oh, the things I'd do.
Think about it, a spiffy mirror setup, and you'll roast that ham instantly!
This is fucking mental. Set skin on FIRE?! :psyboom:
