Also, I never said it would be the kids using them. Adults are idiots too, if you didn't realize.
I wouldn't let my cat chase that laser.
Wat.
Handguns are just as expensive, if not more, and a large percentage of households in America have at least one.
$200 is not something only few people can afford; any family with a current-gen console probably has enough to buy one of these if their kid pestered them for it.
At any rate, I'm more concerned with intentional misuse by mentally unsound adults (guns licenses require mental stability; it seems high-powered lasers do not share this requirement), rather than negligent parents who buy this for laser-enthused pre-teens.
Sorry, when I wrote that I hadn't seen the price and was basing my estimate off the fact that Wickedlasers sold lasers about a tenth of the strength of that one for close to $1000, if I remember correctly.

They do, but this one is made differently in a way that requires less work or something. (?)

No the parts are widely available for cheap
No the parts are widely available for cheap
Well, why was the earlier ones so much more expensive?
Well, why was the earlier ones so much more expensive?
because the parts to make them are not cheap, but parts for this particular laser is

"With the recent release of 445nm direct blue laser diodes into the commercial market, high power handheld lasers with output powers of up to 1W will now be available at a significantly lower cost allowing a greater number of people access to the once exclusive technology."

"For the first time in history, direct blue laser diodes have now become available in the consumer market."
Oh..
Well, I did read that but I didn't quite understand why it made the price go down to 10%.
has Travis Touchdown been mentioned yet :v:
HOLY SHIT? :aaaaa:
[editline]02:59AM[/editline]
Anyways, I'll go to bed now.
Will continue the discussion tomorrow.
Don't use it without protection. You can go blind by just looking at it being pointed on an object.
I have heard that one before
They're not Lightsabers, they're Phasers!!!
:argh:
terrorists win
Holy shit, instantly blind people permanently?
Think what would happen if some crazy guy brought this to a mall or something.
I was just thinking that lol, that would be terrible
I'd love to have one, but it could possibly end up in the wrong hands.
I'VE GOT TO GET ME ONE OF THESE
Then mount it on a robot.
These people who are like "It's ok I know what I'm doing" scare me so much. I can see it now, having a party, lots of drinks, person picks up the laser, thinks it looks cool and tries to shoot a bird near the sidewalk, person is blind for life, or worse. This stuff makes me cringe at the thought.
[editline]12:14AM[/editline]
The fact that it's NOT classified as a dangerous weapon is what will cause more stupid parents to buy more of these for their stupid children thinking it's some sort of blue laser pointer. And I'm sure Wicked Lasers could care less.

For fucks sake, it's a laser. A hammer or a nailgun is a dangerous weapon too if you misuse it. Besides, these are too expensive and quite delicate for a "stupid" parent to buy one for their "stupid" children.
The only person that would buy this would probably be a hardcore Star Wars fan or a laser enthusiast, both of whom would probably know the dangers of such a high powered laser. I'm assuming that this has an IR filter, which means it doesn't emit IR beams which are invisible but still are as energetic as the visible beam that it projects.
People like you are why I can no longer buy an innocent 10mW laser pointer online, because the FDA has banned the import of lasers above the 5mW range, because of people being stupid and blaming the laser itself for the harm it causes, rather than the operator himself.
EDIT: Also, a 150mW laser pointer can pop balloons, this thing right here can very easily cause bodily harm and property damage. It wouldn't be unreasonable to regulations on them, like a tax stamp, but declaring them as actual dangerous weapons? No, that's rediculous.
I want one of these purely for the fact that it can quickly set things on fire. I'm kind of a pyro but I don't go setting fire to anything I can find.

Kitchen Knifes, bb guns, etc
It's Ok, I know what I'm doing

They do sell high powered lasers online in the >150mW range online but they're illegal to import to the US anymore, you have to buy the parts separately and assemble it yourself to circumvent the restrictions. :sigh:
Flipping a switch does not equal : piling a trigger, stabbing someone with a knife, or nail gunning someones head. These things go for miles, and can set skin on fire from one switch. This is practically as dangerous as explosive substances, except it more fondly resembles a common toy.

Once again, a laser of this magnitude would require a fair amount of maintenance to stay operational. Furthermore, they don't even say how focused the laser beam is, if it's the diameter of the lightsaber itself then that would drain the batteries quite fast. Apart from that, assuming that the beam is as wide as the aperture on the lightsaber then the beam itself wouldn't be as powerful as a comparable 1W laser that's focused to a 1mm dot.

Get a load of this guy
Sure, we can blame the operator, but at the LEAST don't give the operator something so powerful without proper education. We take defensive driving courses, don't we?
[editline]12:37AM[/editline]
Simply throwing out my thoughts. I could care less what people end up doing.
We don't take defensive kitchen knife courses do we?
And if there was a point to it OTHER than burning things... Faster? I think I would be OK with it.
[editline]12:39AM[/editline]
Again, switches vs stabbing.

You're a strange person, that's all I'm saying.
Whatever, I got better things to read.
