yeah they bought into it without much thought about the revenue generation, which is why we've seen so many different iterations of desperate advertising lately I'm sure you've noticed it's 100% either advertisements for shitty mobile games or raw unadulterated clickbait
what even is tumblr advertising There's this as well

DeviantArt is one of those websites. It attracts some serious talent because it's just an easy as piss to use platform to host and share your art. But because it's easy as piss you get the fucking 8 year old weaboo's that, let's be honest, offer nothing in terms of art
what alternative sites do you guys recommend for art/writing?
what alternative sites do you guys recommend for art/writing?
believe it or not but despite the reputation the site has, tumblr is an excellent platform so as long as you build your dashboard up to be what you want it to be. i follow a ton of artists and content creators who supply exactly what i want. it's super easy to use, and it's super easy to find people with similar interests and artistic preferences
what alternative sites do you guys recommend for art/writing?
I've heard a lot about Artstation but it seems pretty high-brow compared to deviantart to me. Newgrounds' 2D art portal is very similar to deviantart's setup and probably has a similar if smaller community. It only supports 4 tags and no Groups tho so discoverability is limited. It has a slightly higher submission floor because you need to get scouted by existing members before you can submit to the main site (otherwise it's just confined to your profile and those that already watch you). Tumblr's already mentioned but there's (afaik) no good gallery mode and the Twitter-style homepage feed makes it more difficult to digest bulks of new content compared to deviantart's inbox. Idk how discoverability works on tumblr at all, I tracked down everyone I follow there through watermarks. Which I guess could be seen as a plus because you're only gonna see art you've signed up for. You can bookmark tags to occasionally make suggestions pop up in your feed alongside regular content, but idk how widespread that use is.
I've actually been wanting to leave deviantart because its so full of shit. You used to be able to avoid most garbage by looking under what's popular from the last 8 hours but now the fetish shit is leaking into that as well. I feel stuck though, I have a handful of people who enjoy seeing my posts and I don't want to just ditch them.

That should've been first priority. Also the fixed maximum sizes and compression of even PNG's. Fuck that, Even DA managed to get that right, that shows how embarrassingly shitty Tumblr is.
yeah dA as a website is pretty good, it's the stigma that holds it back. I'd say dA should purge the weird fetish stuff but that would kill a lot of it's userbase

[editline]24th February 2017[/editline]
I don't think you understand the level of customization you can apply to your Tumblr page
I've seen so many, and they all still suck hard compared to DA on the fronts that actually matters. [editline]24th February 2017[/editline] Literally, can't we just bury Tumblr and fetishes on DA and get on with something good?
The problem of categorizing fetishes is, what's a fetish and what's not? I've found dA profiles that looked relatively innocent, but it only contained drawings and favorites of one particular oddly specific subject that, on its own, is not porn or a fetish in any way, only to discover by reading a profile description that for them, it indeed was a fetish. Example: One I found was of cars. Regular ol' cars, dude had some really nicely detailed drawings of just.. Cars. Not anthropomorphized, not given eyes ala Pixar, none of that, just... Cars. I almost considered watching the guy until I read into it more and learned that the dude, as well as many of his watchers probably jacked off to them and would fuck a car IRL if they had the chance without severe bodily harm. How do you categorize that? Anything can be fetishized. I'm not defending it so much as saying that it would be really, really hard to do because the line is so blurry, almost to the point of not existing. Like hell, I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone watches me or has favorited my stuff for increasingly strange fetish reasons despite not intending that whatsoever. :/

Yeah anything can be fetishized, but if you don't know its a fetish by coming across it on the front page then I wouldn't say its much of an issue. What I would love for DA to do is one suggestion I've seen offered a few times - offer a personal filter for tags you don't want to be shown for you. Example: add diaper to your filter and any posts with the tag diaper aren't shown to you.
I find that tag filtering only works when people fucking tag their shit. It's like how I can google search Apple Jack cereal and no matter how explicitly I tell Google to omit My Little Pony, I'm gonna get MLP in the fucking results. DA has a tough choice. Either they only remove material that's blatently porn or shock content and live with everyone saying the site is good but the content is gross or they draw arbitrary lines on what isn't allowed and everyone starts screaming at them about artist censorship (whatever the fuck that is) or how some submissions are removed but others are not. Finding that middle ground where everyone is happy is almost impossible.
