It's considered more of an art form than a blood sport by its supporters, and in some ways I can see that, although the ethical implications of killing a bull should be weighed up with the thought of the amount of cattle that die daily anyway. I'm Spanish and I'm ashamed of this tradition. The concept, a man against a bull, such a huge animal in a battle to show who is better, the man or the beast, sounds pretty fucking badass, but the problem is that it's not the man vs the bull, it's the man with fucking weapons and shit against the bull which in many cases is drugged, beaten and generally blocked by the scene. What's so manly in a man with lots of advantages against a single poor bull? None, and Matadores (or Toreros as we usually call them here) should all die in horrible ways because they've got no honour. Even if the bull wins the fight, the people who are watching will all say "DEATH TO THE BULL!" "POOR MATADOR" and the bull will inevitably die, which makes the thing even worse. I'm glad they're fighting against this tradition in Catalonia :spain:

A true bullfight is a battle between the matador and the bull as he is the final act in the killing, he must place his sword with finesse and accuracy, he must use his cape as a weapon, capable of serious damage. True fighting bulls are raised on large open pastures to simulate wild conditions before they are chosen to fight, they are not to be drugged or beaten or mishandled, the bullfight is not suppose to be a one sided affair.
