They give out prizes and stuff to people that help out, too.

source? i tried googling it but i found nothing
Sounds like they got hit in the crossfire of a DDoS attack on the shared servers that host their site. Don't think a company this small has their own dedicated servers.
At the end of the day they got a shit ton of publicity because of this, so it looks like they benefit more than they lost.
This was during Mark's livestream...
Was the the Live Stream at Youmacon? I heard that they were hit with a DDOS attack from my brother who was at the event in person.
Let me state, I'm all for charities, I admire and support their efforts especially those who are aimed at helping children. Unfortunately there's also a lot of "charities" using that special little place in our hearts for children, to benefit themselves along the way.
I know in the past some of you have participated in this fund raiser Play Games. Heal Kids. | Extra Life - DonorDrive
It's about to kick off it's annual drive again this year, and some members have approached me, asking my thoughts on allowing its promotion here within HFC, and possibly forming a team based drive. Money gained goes directly to it's charity: Hospitals Helping Local Kids | Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Both the fund raiser site extra-life.org and childrensmiraclenetworkhospitals.org are both owned by the same person.
I remember last year near this time, a member participated in the event, and enlisted the help of some others here within the community. While we didn't promote nor endorse the action, it seemed in good spirit.
This year the same question came up, and I thought I'd do some digging. My findings were not surprising, but something I'd like to make others aware of as well. And clarification on why in the future, I'd like to continue discussing event proposals that involve people's hard earned money, before HFC ever puts an endorsement behind it.
Charities are required to make their documents publicly accessible and available. (though a vast majority have better things to do than read legal docs, something most companies count on. When was the last time you read a EULA in its entirety for example?) The public has a right to see where their dollars are being funneled. In this charity's case, it's clear; mostly into their dynamic "over-salaried" wallets.
I've taken the time to put together a couple of pictures for you guys who like the TLDR version of things:
(view link)
The complete doc can be found here for those who like to dig even deeper (like myself): http://childrensmiraclenetworkhospit...s/2011-990.pdf
Looks like they were getting unwanted attention as well: http://childrensmiraclenetworkhospit.../2011Audit.pdf
I'd suspect this explains why the company took a loss this past year. Their reported income was 60-70% higher the previous years. (which translated to higher salaries)
And fraud charges in 2008: http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7...-of-fraud.html
I provide this information to you as a word of caution, and leave you to form your own opinions about what I've presented to you. Ultimately it's up to you to decide what you do with your hard earned money, and you do not have to share my opinions or evaluation of the information I've provided.
However as your community manager, as a friend, please understand it's for the protection of the community to error on the side of caution when choosing not to officially endorse such events.

In short, little goes to actual causes, CEO and other high-ups give themselves shittons of money.
Chairity prolly bullshit, hence internet justice DDOS
I know 4chan gets a lot of bad rap for being dicks, but you have to admit that they do definitely dispense some proper internet justice every once in a while.
The only people more dispicable than those who DDOS a charity are those who use charity as a front to make millions off of kindhearted donations.
They only bring more help than their hurt will ever do...
Maybe that is their goal? Causing an uproar that brings more attention to the charity? Which will then get more support?
These are CIA tactics.
Is this one of those charities that give like 2% of the money towards the goal? only in that case could i see the reasoning for this.
