A man got assaulted a few weeks ago just for being a member of the press.
There's a difference between running out and assaulting an innocent member of the press and posting a .gif of wrestling an entire corporation in a WWE match. If you can't tell the difference, you may have bigger issues regarding your sense of humor and the ability to interpret figuratively versus literally.
That's because he's the president of the United States. If any person tweeted a gif of themselves beating up a depiction of someone known to be considered their enemy, I would view that as support for violence against that enemy at least, and a down right threat at worst. When it's the actual god damn president of the United States, that is incitement of violence however silly it seems - and I do agree that it is silly - because he has millions of followers who share his mentality and we already have real examples of violence being exerted on reporters eerily similar to what was depicted in this GIF. Yes, it is silly and just a meme, but it retweeting it makes it into something more when you're POTUS.
I've already lowered my standards quite a bit because I know who Donald Trump is and I don't expect anything presidential from him. People freaking out because they haven't made the leap better catch up fast lest they fall into permanent insanity. That's not an excuse for the president. He's an ass. I don't like him. I'd rather have someone else in office. But this is an insignificant drop in the bucket at this point. It's shit talking. That's all it is. If he photoshopped a specific reporter's face onto the person, that I would take a legitimate threat. But otherwise I don't see it as a call for violence at all, and when people start conflating everything Trump does with actual hate speech all dissent on our side is taken even less seriously.
I'd be saying the same thing about Obama had he done the same thing.
The obvious difference being Obama would never do something as goddamn idiotic and ridiculous as this.
The obvious difference being Obama would never do something as goddamn idiotic and ridiculous as this.
Yeah, it would definitely make a news piece worth reading if Obama did it, but with Trump doing this, I remain quite apathetic as I'm no longer shocked by Trump. All I know is Donald Trump is not a good president, and we gotta pull on through/defend ourselves until we can elect someone better. (Or, more realistically fuck up again because the DNC and RNC are both run by the worst people.)
Yeah, it would definitely make a news piece worth reading if Obama did it, but with Trump doing this, I remain quite apathetic as I'm no longer shocked by Trump. I'll continue to call someone out for their absolutely atrocious behavior
Aside from being immature, it has an air of hostility about it even without the context of Trump's infamous, constant threats towards political opponents. It gets even worse once you stop judging it in a vacuum, because the context makes it obvious that Trump is fostering a culture of hatred against the free press, joke or not
When viewed in a vacuum, sure, it's just some silly meme. But within the context of Trump and the Republican Party that gladly welcomes people who attack reporters into Congress, there's a bit more too it.
I really do not think so. It's an embarrassing and pathetic display from the President but this tweet isn't inciting violence, it's a dumb meme that represents Trump taking "fake news" to task and dominating them. You seem to think that by ignoring the "bullshit" you're rising above it. You're not. If we don't call this out for what it is when we see it, we're letting this become the new "Normal" and sorry, but I don't want to live on this fucking planet anymore if this is the new normal you and some other people seem poised to accept and ready to defend despite words to the contrary. Your apathy helps this become normal. [editline]2nd July 2017[/editline]
I really do not think so. This is how things get worse. We just normalize them.
It never ceases to amaze me just how low the standards are for presidential behavior now that a petulant manchild holds the office Like god damn, there is some high level apathy out there. This is apathy that takes serious effort and upkeep and it's astonishing to me It takes some serious effort to ignore the past year of Trump making no secret of how much he hates the American news media to pass this off as harmless and given his prior track record it's not that much of a stretch to see him as approving violence against them It's fucking absurd
Is there some way we can gut this cabbage with impeding free speech or something by slandering/suppressing a prominent news network?
I don't know how you can become so apathetic to what this is. You seem to think that by ignoring the "bullshit" you're rising above it. You're not. Your apathy helps this become normal.
I share the same concerns that many people do, but I feel like many people are just riling themselves up which is just wasted energy. This is our reality. This what we have to live with until we don't have to or can't anymore. Yes, what Trump is doing is ridiculous, hateful, mean, stupid, short-sighted, and whatever negative word you can throw at him, but all of the negative words have been used up. He's a negative being. So what do we do? Continue throwing words at him? Try and find more ways to say he's terrible? What does that do, exactly? The first thing you said - that I am "ignoring" the news - is a false assumption. I do listen to the news. I don't watch CNN. CNN is not a good news source, in my opinion. You can throw studies about its accuracy as it relates to other news organizations, but it is also the one of the most manipulative in the United States. It is visual clickbait. To clarify, CNN wants you and me and everyone within reach to be outraged, because outrage creates their audience. Following suit is the Huffington Post, Fox News, Breitbart, Heat Street, Buzzfeed News... I can tell you a long list of truths in a very slimy way, and in a monotonous way. I don't advocate for BBC World News as the end all be all news source, but it is an easily obtainable source of information for me as I work my job. It concisely reports everything and I feel like I can maintain a level-head as I take in level-headed information. It doesn't feel like theatrical presentations mashed with hot takes from celebrities debating each other into divisiveness. NPR Politics follows after BBC in being enjoyable for me, although there is a co-host from that podcast I'm not fond of. What you and I can and should do is stay informed, stay sane, and stay alive until the next election until we can elect someone better. We fight corruption in politics and beat the bad guys like Trump by electing someone more responsible that raises the bar. We focus on social change to help increase votes. And we stay together as a society - I genuinely feel like the news on top of politics is dividing us all and that is a beast scarier than Donald Trump. The normal you propose - one of continuous outrage - will help put us on the destructive path towards divisiveness, where no one wants to live with or be ruled by one another.
And not 24 hours later, he posts something so bad that he later has to remove it. Guess it wasn't modern day presidential after all? His ability to consistently shoot himself in the foot is amazing.

What an interesting shitposting turn.
I see we're going to have another few news cycles dominated by pundits obsessing over social media rather than anything of consequence. Thank you, Mr. President.
it seems less like you're proposing apathy and more that you think we should retain focus.
A legitimate weakness of mine as I've found over the last few years is I can't articulate what I'm trying to say and end up pissing people off. I don't mean "apathy" as in literally not caring, but I feel we shouldn't let tweets phase us to the point that we are hurt or made excessively emotional. People in the past have given up rights out of anger and fear. People have violated rights out of anger and fear. People just aren't their best when they let emotions take over, and emotional is exactly what I would describe the last two years as. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions for both sides, and the overflowing amount of information we have nowadays means that it's very possible for people to live in a consistent state of bitterness, anger, and sadness. I think this tweet isn't very important in the grand scheme of things as it does not teach us anything we didn't already know about Trump, and I still don't believe that it's actively promoting violence. Perhaps I am the person in the wrong, but generally speaking I feel like much of Trump news is very repetitive. It always receives the same kind of comments. It doesn't really spur any new debate or conversation or anything. Whether or not people want what we're experiencing to be normal, this is our new normal. Everything that has been said has already been said. What is important right now is strategy.
I see we're going to have another few news cycles dominated by pundits obsessing over social media rather than anything of substance. Thank you, Mr. President.
I believe you should thank the people you used in your first sentence as well. They deserve equal if not even more blame than the president as they are curtailing information for the public and presenting in what they believe will be the most entertaining.

They are the words of the most powerful man in the world. What he does, how he acts, what he says and how he presents himself to the people is important. it's not about ignoring the fluff, you can blame CNN or what have you, sure, they do bare part of the blame, but even if they didn't there would still be a person who exemplifies behavior that other people will emulate and that is not something we should be okay with right now.
Trump is literally saying to pummel news logos in a wrasling wring. He needs to be murdered to dath.
A man got assaulted a few weeks ago just for being a member of the press.
A man got shot a few weeks ago just for being a member of the republican party.
I see we're going to have another few news cycles dominated by pundits obsessing over social media rather than anything of consequence. Thank you, Mr. President.
Social media has a growing integration and importance in the modern, technological world This isn't the internet of ten years ago. With the growing integration and importance of social media in the here and now, you can't just brush everything off as 'lol well it's just the internet' anymore. You cannot ignore just how closely intertwined social media has become with meatspace People have lost their jobs over Twitter and Facebook posts. Companies frequently look through social media accounts while evaluating prospective hires. Your conduct on social media has actual ramifications in the times we live in While it's ridiculous that this is newsworthy, it's equally ridiculous that the president of the United God Damn States of America, a nuclear armed military and economic superpower conducts himself like a prepubescent child on a daily basis If this was some schmuck managing a fast food chain restaurant, sure, maybe his conduct wouldn't be noteworthy, but this man holds one of the highest positions of power in the entire damn world. He should be held to a standard that reflects his fucking office
Reading the responses to this tweet makes me want to fucking kill myself. There is no hope for america.
A man got shot a few weeks ago just for being a member of the republican party.
And wasn't given any sort of support by the democratic party, whereas everyone seems to be apologizing for trump.
A man got shot a few weeks ago just for being a member of the republican party.
You say that as though it's a counter-argument, but it really has nothing to do with what he was saying. Also, I know this is unsurprising, but the dude who made the video is racist as hell.
I'm not sure what's funnier, the president posting this or all the outrage over it? Must be a slow day for you guys.
Also, I know this is unsurprising, but the dude who made the video is racist as hell.
So h*ckin what? That has nothing to do with Trump's views.
So h*ckin what? That has nothing to do with Trump's views.
Jeez Chuck E Cheese, I guess you're right mister, you sure showed us
Did you just try and prove your intellectual and moral superiority by saying "So h*ckin what"
It was a joke which you apparently took seriously, much like how you're taking Trump's sweet seriously. There's correlation. Next time try to go after my argument instead of the emotional response.
My heart bleeds for CNN reporters who can't take a joke.
my heart bleeds for people who excuse the president's abhorrent behavior because they're too immature to take other's lives seriously.
It was a joke which you apparently took seriously, much like how you're taking Trump's sweet seriously. There's correlation. Next time try to go after my argument instead of the emotional response.
Your argument is "what's the big deal huh"? That all you got?
my heart bleeds for people who excuse the president's abhorrent behavior because they're too immature to take other's lives seriously.
Another emotional appeal with very little substance. What's so wrong about him posting a gif, besides any argument that it's not becoming of his position?
Your argument is "what's the big deal huh"? That all you got?
Yes. I do not see why it's very important, and no one has told me yet. You try.
