Team Fortress 2. I think it's pretty. [editline]10:45PM[/editline] also Psychonauts And while Garry's Mod isn't art, it's a tool that facilitates the creation of art.
I personally thought that Infamous was art. Well, at least story wise, because we haven't had many super hero/super villain videos game in a while. Edit: That didn't have super powers, forgot to add that.
It's a shame how people over look good artistically crafted games. They much rather play shooters of today than new experiences like Indigo Prophecy or more currently Heavy Rain (which I thought was amazing, and I'm about to replay it) for example. People don't know or care about anything else but the action/shooter genre. It's sad.
Halfquake. It's a mod, but I would call t art
I love the Halfquake mods, such great detail and humor.
If a bunch of Vitruvian Men ran 100m, does that make the 100m art? No. Does it stop the Vitruvian Man from being art? No. Games, in and of themselves, cannot be art, but they can contain art in the form of the pictures and sounds and what have you. The thing that defines games and seperates them from films and songs - that is, the gameplay - is not art, but the gameplay is a mere interface for the art within the game.
How can no one have just briefly mentioned the Half-Life series? The original was unprecedented for its time, as was its successor. No other FPS had been done that way EVER. The intricate detail given to the plotline of the games (details like the G-Man's soliloquies, the amazing continuity of the series, as well as the way the game forces you to think) more than qualifies the series as artistic.
I consider code that is used in games/programs art. Unless it's sloppy code
ME2 had better gameplay, but lacked the "space epic" feel that ME1 had. Same thing happened to SC2. The gameplay and graphics got better, but the story, characters and feel took a dive. I don't know, I haven't played a modern game lately (as in the past 2-3 years) that really stunned me with non-gameplay aspects. [editline]08:46PM[/editline] The old guy's speech about Moscow in Exhibition Station made me really sad
The good ending to metro 2033 is truly beautiful. And poor Hunter... But the greatest thing I have ever heard and he was the one who said it is "Force answers force, war breeds war and death only brings death. In order to break this vicious cycle one must do more than act without any thought or doubt."
The Legacy of Kain series is worthy of being considered Art.
Mass Effect was truly the only game I've ever played that I could wander around in for hours and just look at things without getting bored. The gorgeous environmental detail combined with the subtle yet enchanting music made it, in all honesty, an unforgettable gameplay experience. I've played through it three times and every playthrough I notice like a hundred new things that I didn't see the last time, and the first Citadel arrival always leaves my jaw agape.

Hunter's motto (also being the Ranger's motto in general) was "If it's hostile, you kill it."
Heavy Rain.
Fucking this. If any game out of this thread should be nominated as a piece of art, it would be this. Yes, some of the other games had stunning vistas and jaw-dropping graphics, but Heavy Rain was an experience.

Kahn and Hunter we're two awesome guys. Kahn was more of a wise man than Hunter but Hunter was the kind of guy who wouldn't give up in a fight.
Jesus fucking christ, bioshock is a shallow inferior ripoff to system shock. System shock was amazing. Bioshock was a shitty steampunk remake. Had system shock never existed, then bioshock would have been good. But does exist. I've SEEN the potential. I've SEEN them achieve it. To watch them fail so spectacularly with bioshock is depressing.
Heavy Rain is fucking awful.

Starcraft is art.
Metal Gear FUCKING Solid 4

The story is confusing and interesting, leaving you guessing. The atmosphere has an eerie side to it. The setting and envioronment is creepy, while still managing to be stunning and have depth. The characters are insane, making the player feel alone. The fact that you can look outside the window into the dark and murky ocean, and see all of Rapture and the fish. How you constantly see the city falling apart. It may not be the greatest game out there, but it's sure a step forward. Bioshock Infinite, on the other hand, I don't like as much. Since it's in the air, it loses many of the things the other two had. The atmosphere and envioronment are different. This makes the game not as dark and closed in, since light streams in through the windows and there's no water outside to contain fish and make the levels feel closed in. It's also steampunk, unlike the others. In my opinion, Infinite loses many of the things I enjoyed about the others and I feel like it doesn't need to have the Bioshock tag. But I still will enjoy this change of scenery. That's my opinion. Holy balls I was bored.
I would say The Saboteur was art. Very creative on the colors.
Video games don't have to be realistic to be art, I think Super Mario 64 has the greatest art I've seen in a video game.
Heavy Rain is fucking awful.
Why?
I always thought that Myst and Riven (sequel) were art. The guys made their game out of their home. The sound recorder even said he put a microphone in the toilet to get some bubble noise. [img_thumb]http://www.mystjourney.com/img/screenshots/riven-09.jpg[/img_thumb] It was art, especially for a game from 1997.
Okami In my opinion level design and art direction is more important than graphics
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129256077 (also listen to the interview on the same page) in the same vein as that article about Warren Spector's ideals on video games, I give you this. seriously, who here HASN'T considered at least SOME games to be true forms of art? there are too many examples for this. unfortunately, though, there are just as many cases against this, too. (not naming any names here, don't want a flame war breaking out.)
Video game music is an art. Only VGs would attempt something like combing Traditional Chinese with Metal to create awesome video game music, and it works well. Plus, Dynasty Warriors is a great way to experience a classic book (The Romance of 3 Kingdoms).
Why?
It makes absolutely no fucking sense. The only way the plot can work is if the entire cast and production team are idiots. [sp]The detective is revealed as the killer, despite the fact that you can READ HIS FUCKING THOUGHTS and it is shown how he killed someone by bludgeoning them over the head with a typewriter DESPITE BEING IN A DIFFERENT PLACE AT THE TIME. What kind of ten-year-old goes wandering off in a crowded shopping centre and then goes into the middle of the fucking road? What kind of ten-year-old dies when he gets hit by a car doing 15mph? There's plot threads that don't go anywhere - the blackouts and that - and the voice acting and controls are horrible [/sp].
The truly breathtaking games are not the least buggy, but the ones that make you think holy shit afterwards. I can't really think of any that fit that perfectly yet.
Video game music is an art.
Are you serious, that sounds fucking terrible.

Never got why Bioshock was rated so high, I got bored of it near the end, the whole presentation and gameplay of go x and then to y started to annoy me to no end.
