Facial animations are still great, as are the characters, guns, and enemies. Graphics are honestly the only dated thing about the game, it still holds up after all these years and even then it still has it's awesome moments like leaving the trainstation for the first time and seeing the Citadel looming over the city.
ya textures and graphics are the one thing that source has not really been updated with in a long while, but i think just updating graphics in the new source isn't big enough of an update for valve, they tend to future-proof themselves, which is why source is still running smoothly when everyone is showing off their awsome engines.
I'm getting lates and I don't know why!
Because the actual creator is a facepuncher who posted it on the forums himself?
Yea and thanks, I used to hang around in this thread quite often last year. I guess Epic wasn't lying when they said that real-time GI was just too heavy. Imagine how bad your framerates would have been had they kept SVOGI, it's no wonder they had to remove it. The new lightmass is incredible though, the GI quality is fantastic even though it's not real-time. The render times are still a pain in the ass but thats life. Currently I'm experimenting with the new physically based shading, messing around with PBR materials and learning the new workflow (hence everything is white for the moment). I probably won't post any updates along the way, don't want more unfinished work to get out. Valve has also always catered to people with lower-end computers, so I don't expect graphics on the level of UE4 and I won't be disappointed with that either. Engine content and flexibility is 300% more important than graphical ability and I hope Source 2 shows some of that.
really nice work logithx! you made the news section on the website you originally posted it on!
HL2 was still one of the first 3D games that will never look outlandishly dated though imo. This image shows how far we've come but HL2 still looks acceptable ten years on, whereas most games from the late 90s/early 2000s look massively dated
I always liked the mix between lower and higher resolution textures in HL2

unreal runs better on my pc better than source most times and looks better too
Source always runs fantastic in Valve games and their games are great, but you can't deny Source is very old at this point. It's time for a new engine, not least because Source will have trouble running on the PS4/Xbone with their greater focus on multicore.
Why does Eli have a lazy eye?!
The better question to be asking is why aren't his eyes brown
Speaking of which, isn't that Half Life 2 fan remake still in the works? I remember seeing it somewhere in the forums or on moddb.
Why does Eli have a lazy eye?!
Why does Eli look like black Commander Shepard?
HL2 is one of the few games I've played with flawless lip synching.
Tell me about it. Recently started playing Bioshock Infinite, and while a vast majority of the game is so gorgeous I want it to have my babies, as soon as a character starts flapping their muppet-mouth it totally breaks the experience.

was there even any mocapping for the faces? it was my understanding that they animated it all manually using which just makes it even more incredible really
It looks dated, but its dated more gracefully then say, Deus Ex.
Deus Ex is more comparable to HL1, graphically, imo
The reason we think HL2 aged so well is because the last time we all played it was long after it was updated with the Episode 2 engine. The original HL2 looked far more primitive than it does now.
I know that you can't recreate Half-Life 2 in UDK due to legal reasons, but i would love to see the first few levels up to the teleporter sequence with Kliner.

HL2 is on the verge of looking horribly dated. Even Portal is starting to show some strain.
half life 2 still looks rather decent, especially in motion/
I'm replaying HL2 on xbox 360 actually, it seems dated but in a good way It stood out the most in 2004 because it looked so much better than everything else, and I don't think that was of source but more Valve's art style along with it mixing well with the engine The only thing HL2 doesn't look dated on is the lip syncing and acting area, seems like most games apart from a few haven't been able to get it right whereas they have
The better question to be asking is why aren't his eyes brown
and an even better question is why is he cock-eyed.
Half Life 2 was definitely much better looking than any games of the era, and because of the quality of the art it's aged well. At the time its engine was very advanced too. For an appropriate comparison, Halo 2 came out literally days earlier. I doubt anyone here would deny that Half Life 2 looked miles better.
