Tbh I think everyone should get free university education. Enlighten and educate all people, all ages, all races, all religions and most importantly all classes. It can only do the country good. I know realistically it could be hard to afford, but if we can do it for public schools we can figure something out for university.
Add universities to public schools or something like that?
my province gave me 500 dollars to help with tuition :(
I'm sorry to say but this is a trick used far to often, It was even used by labour in some cases with their bursaries scheme. I'm willing to bet it will be very difficult to even get this kind of funding, And it will never be as simple as "if you are poor we pay for you" There will be tons of jargon and bullshit that you have to go to to prove that you are eligible for it and it will be limited to certain universities and so on. This is just the lib-dems trying to save face in full knowledge that they are hated by the majority of people who voted for them. Well i'm sorry but I'm not falling for it, If you want to convince me your doing good for the students then they would all unanimously vote AGAINST the education reforms this thursday, il still be going to the protests.
And how poor is the poorest? My family isn't exactly the richest family ever but it's certainly not the poorest, it seems to me like they're just trying to save face rather than listening to what students want. Do you think they will be able to make an exemption for this?
A single year of free tuition? Hm... considering they want to put some courses up to £9000 that means they're still going to be paying £6000 at the end... so still more than they would have paid if we kept tuition fees at £3000. Sweet. [editline]6th December 2010[/editline]
poor people should get a job instead of whining for free stuff
Wow. I could write an essay on how incorrect this statement is, but I have to be off to 6th Form now.. although I'm not sure why because at this rate I won't be able to afford university anyway.
I think the middle class is more likely to afford tuition than the poorer classes.
Not the lower middle class, trust me, my family could never afford to pay for me to go to uni. I have always been *just* above the limit for all accademic financial help and my family can't help me out with money as they have their bills, mortgage, young children, etc to pay for. I am so glad I have already graduated and I should be out of this conservative shithole by next year.
To be honest I think they should be looking at the people who are actually being let into university. I'm at the University of Wolverhampton (which is admittedly, not the best of learning institutions) and at least 80% of my course either have no clue what they are doing or do not speak english to a level which would enable them to study at degree level. Something tells me that most of them got let in for their money rather than any inkling of ability or motivation - the executives get paid over £150K. This is probably the kind of practice that is leading to a degree meaning less than it once did.
We have student finance for a reason, they're making prices rise for middle class people and lowering them for the poor, that's just stupid, most middle class people that I know of, including myself, don't take any money from their parents, and because of student bloody finance I live with little to no money, even with a job. Giving poorer students free tuition is just stupid.
It's a good idea. just a massive shame that as Cherry Gmod says it'll all just be a trick/last resort for the lib dems with oceans of proof required for your earnings. not to mention that only 'up to' 18,000 will get it. that's out of millions. Increasing fees for the better universities will cause lesser ones to follow, applicants drop, lesser uni's close and once again university education is something only for the rich/ social elite.
Tories: NO DAMNIT DON'T EMPOWER THE POOR PEOPLE SOON ENOUGH THEY'LL HAVE "IDEAS!"
That is the worst save ever. Did you ACTUALLY try to look like you meant to talk about the US?
Those fucking poor people get all the breaks.
This is the EMA stuff all over again. I was the only person in my College who didn't qualify for it.
That is the worst save ever. Did you ACTUALLY try to look like you meant to talk about the US?
uhh I was not aware there is a tory party in the usa
This is bullshit. How is it fair? They won't have to pay those years at university back because their parents are poor? Student loans are entirely on the student, your parents income shouldn't have anything to do with it.
18,000 students? Is that is?
Fuck yeah, this is awesome news for me, I just hope my family qualifies as poor.
This would never happen in America.
I quite like the rise from £15k a year to £21k a year. Time to cruise by on £20,999 a year for 20 years and get my debts cancelled. :v:
This would never happen in America.
scholarships happen loads of em "federal pell grant"
Fuck yeah, we're hiding behind the Welsh Assembly again. I have to say as much as I moan about bullshit like welsh language act, they've saved my ass here. No WAY could I afford the tuition fees being proposed.
so what about the rest of us
so what about the rest of us
sorry only the poor are allowed to be socially mobile. the rest of you can idle around it's a triage system.
Thanks for screwing over the lower middle class
That's who their going to screw over, the ones who just about make it into the higher tax bracket. Not good enough.
so what about the rest of us
Pay for it because you can.

I'm going to wait until Cameron and his axis of evil are voted out before I go to uni. Probably get a job for two years after sixth form
