Even if she's too old or some shit in your opinion, you don't have to be a fucking dick about it. Ever heard of being nice? Actors are people too, ya chumps
He was not being a dick.
"Maggie you're not getting this role"
"Why not?"
"No reason"
That's being a dick.
A poll for you guys:

I think that Keanu Reeves, Yancy Butler, Moon Lee, and Chow Yun Fat aged pretty well.

Aint that like a genetic thing because men can still make babies past a certain age while women cant so it kinda doesnt matter?
A poll for you guys:

I don't think it's about men aging better than women, it's that society views older men and older women differently. A good-looking girl in her 20s is a good-looking girl, but a good-looking 40yo woman is a "MILF", and people always feel the need to point out whether or not she's aged well. But when an attractive guy in his 20s eventually ages, he's still just "an attractive guy"
Well if the person she was portraying was supposed to be young then I don't see the problem. If it was supposed to be an equally old woman then yeah that is pretty dumb.
that's a pretty awful picture of her tho
nearly every other picture looks alot better

But the thing is, when you look at what people they date in real life, it's quite usual to see them with much younger persons, so why shouldn't that translate into movies?

In which one of those movies do they play themselves, again?

William Shattner has aged backwards, dude looks 50 when he's really closer to 80
So what. The producers are the ones actually funding the movie. I'd probably do the exact same thing in their place. I'd want the youngest, hottest star I could possibly get for a love interest because that's just what sells best. If I was directing or casting the movie, I might think otherwise but as a producer, I'd probably agree 100% with them.

I think everyone gets that. The problem is in thinking "that's just how things are" as if just because it makes sense it's ok
In which one of those movies do they play themselves, again?
It's not about them playing themselves, but in our society it is accepted and somewhat common for that to happen, so it's very natural for movies to portrait that too. The attractiveness scale is also different for both genders.
Ultimately I don't see nothing wrong with this, it is what it is, if the producers want a specific character to be a certain way I think they should have that freedom.
I think everyone gets that. The problem is in thinking "that's just how things are" as if just because it makes sense it's ok
What's not okay about it? Why would it not be okay to prefer younger, more attractive person to play a love interest compared to an older, uglier one?

If your argument is that movies are merely mirroring real life, then "somewhat common" should not translate into this
Also, it's worth pointing out that "somewhat common" is, according to Wikipedia, only ~9% of married couples (in the US at least)
Edit: I should clarify that the 9% statistic is "couples that are 10+ years apart"
What's not okay about it? Why would it not be okay to prefer younger, more attractive person to play a love interest compared to an older, uglier one?
Because when being cast as the love interest of a 55-year-old man, a 30-something woman would still be a whole lot more realistic and appealing, than to have a woman barely past 18 fill that role. Think about the age difference, then think about how common it is to have that age difference in films, pairing the older man with the much younger woman.
It's how common this is in media (not in real life) that makes this look bad, like it's a desperate move from older men vying to cling onto youth, sweating while telling themselves that they've still "got it".
Also, the fact that you felt it necessary to conflate "older" with "uglier" when speaking specifically about female love interests, while the older male gets a pass. Not meant to be a hit against you, just y'know, check your thoughts on this. Why is this okay? Why is the role of the female love interest written like this in the first place?
I also like to point out another thing, everyone goes nuts over George clooney. I mean he's not bad, but everyone thinks he's like the hottest dude around

In the press hollywood loves to trumpet how progressive and egalitarian they are, in reality it's pretty much business as usual.

Those societal views are rooted on biology.

Well the love movies are fiction. I don't see why we should try to force fiction to be more "like real world" when the reason most people watch these movies is to escape reality. If whoever decides this wants a young woman and an old man, he should have every right to do that. Who wants to watch realistic movies? It's like games. Realistic ones suck. I'm not interested in a movie where a man and similar age woman are dating in realistic fashion and then watch them doing daily chores. That's boring as fuck. I get enough of that in real life.
This actress, in my opinion, is quite ugly for being 37. Again I don't want to see a movie with average ugly people. I can go outside to see that. I want to see this unrealistic couple doing unrealistic romance things, not some common average Joes going at it.
Entertainment is fantasy, fantasy should not get neutered in the name of social justice or any of that crap. It isn't realistic or common for such age differences? Good, that's what makes movies. Things that aren't realistic.
the book this movie is based off of features a man in his 50s and a girl in her 20s so yeah it makes sense that she wouldn't be hired
AFAIK she didn't name the movie, what movie is it and how did you find out?
Those societal views are rooted on biology.
Well I like some of my movies realistic. I like some of them unrealistic. Either way, I have never, ever (and I can assure you literally nobody else has either) thought "Oh no, this couple is almost the same age, this is too realistic for me, what a bad movie" because that's the most bullshit excuse I've ever heard
Feel free to show me your sources mate
Fertility is very valuable.
Men stay fertile for a longer period of time.
Women that can't bear children were always undervalued.
These values are really old.

You need a source to prove you that biologically men prefer younger women?
Excuse for what? To star a prettier, younger woman? Please
If she's put alongside a guy of her own age would it suddenly become too realistic for you
If she's put alongside a guy of her own age would it suddenly become too unrealistic for you
I'd have no issue but I'd also have no issue with them picking a younger one.
Why is this news? She's being super emotional about not fitting a role and a vision.
When Gyllenhaal asked if she was going to be fired from the role, the director reportedly responded "I ALREADY FIRED YOU"

The guys face is synthetic by now from all the work he's had done.

Let's be honest here, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is still really fuckable.
