If you measure the number of sunspots detected on the sun every year, you get a graph that looks like this: [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/28/Sunspot_Numbers.png[/t] It repeats every 11-12 years, and is currently unexplained. Right now, we should be at a peak, and as you can see in the photo, there's like 3 or 4. [url]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cycle[/url]

So all that is happening is that they expected more sunspots in 2012 but there weren't so they think there might be more than usual this year. Essentially a double peak. Okay. That sounded a lot scarier than it is.

Maybe the sun has just finished it's puberty, that could explain the missing spots.
