you know what I've noticed? Origin threads stir a ton of shit just from existing. Same as religion threads. Origin sounds a lot like "religion". Therefore, Origin threads are religion threads.
//TODO add witty Stargate reference here
My, my, look at the Valve fanboys bravely standing up for Steam against the oppressive Origin.
My own opinion on EA has no Valve basings on it. I lost respect for them since Spore and I just simply do not want to support them in any way.
I wouldn't mind it at all if I wasn't forced to use it to play games or if it didn't take my computer information or the other things it does. Sure I will admit that I don't like EA but thats not why I have problems with origins.
And what does Steam do differently?
My own opinion on EA has no Valve basings on it. It's not a case of them having any "basing" in Valve, it's a case of them being the legal distributor of their games. Plus Spore was developed by a developer owned by EA who then published the game. Big difference in those roles.
I hate to jump on bandwagons, but fuck is EA snide and full of assdicks.
They asked me once... Now they do it automatically.
Maybe because your using the same computer so they know probably much hasn't changed so they probably aren't taking any more information. The way the hardware thing works is that it randomly selects users and asks them so you could have also just not have been selected again.
Haha, so someone buys a game from EA (as they may also try to promote Organ) and when the go to install the games they have to install steam? And from then on they buy all their games on steam?
And what does Steam do differently?
Actually a lot of Steam games you can play without Steam. You can play Operation Flashpoint, for instance, without Steam.
Actually a lot of Steam games you can play without Steam. You can play Operation Flashpoint, for instance, without Steam.
That's not a Valve game.

That was in the span of a year. [editline]5th September 2011[/editline]
Actually a lot of Steam games you can play without Steam.
My laptop fried, I got a desktop, and I've replaced the videocard since then. That was in the span of a year.
Like I said randomly selected. You just weren't picked again and I bet people who haven't been picked before have a higher chance of people who haven't.
Origins runs a program that checks your computers hardware/software. I don't know what you mean by intrusive but that sounds pretty intrusive. Unless your talking about hard drive space or something because I hear its smaller.
First off, everyone does that, including windows, second, by intrusive I mean like with steam you have to have steam running, and last time I checked couldn't go in offline mode to plays games without internet without having to log in with internet and change it to offline mode. With Origin, you don't even have to have it running to plays the games you bought with it.
Steam's offline mode is shit
Why wouldn't valve let ea sell their games, profit is profit.

I know that quite alot of games I have booted up have told me what graphics card I'm using and how much RAM I have.
Why wouldn't valve let ea sell their games, profit is profit.
Part of it goes to EA rather than all of it to them.
Don't almost all games do this too? So that they know what settings to use by default. I know that quite alot of games I have booted up have told me what graphics card I'm using and how much RAM I have.
Almost all applications do this. Windows mainly checks your hardware and drivers on a regular basis to give MS feedback on what their users are using. Office sends back hardware configuration and usage data too. Basically all programs need to send some data back to their developers. It is all anonymous, they cannot identify who had what, but it is bunged into a database so it can be read and analyzed in fancy charts. There is no reason at all to panic because origin is seeing what your hardware setup is and what applications you have installed (hint: it can't tell the difference between a trial, activated or cracked edition, most cracks act perfectly normal) and sends it to EA, anonymously so that they can improve Origin in a way that works for the data they collected. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline]
Part of it goes to EA rather than all of it to them.
Yeah, they get a share minus the distribution costs. Much like when you buy it in a store. Valve get their share, EA get their distribution share.
Steam's offline mode is shit
Bet you tried to update a game or look at your friends list.
Yeah, legally EA (most likely) has this publishing right. But they're still being massive dicks about it, seeing as they're freely pulling their own products but also manipulating Valve's popular video games so they get more money while Valve loses money because their product isn't be sold on Steam.
I bought Orange Box at Best Buy, I guess Valve lost money because I didn't buy it through Steam. It's all an elaborate scheme between EA and Best Buy to ruin Valve, even though Valve is the one who decided they wanted retail copies in the first place. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline]
Part of it goes to EA rather than all of it to them.
Like I said, you could buy the retail copies from any big box store like Best Buy or Walmart, and those copies are all published by EA.
Bet you tried to update a game or look at your friends list.
Um no when I log in it tells me that and then I press ok and it shuts down Steam. Offline Mode only works if I have Steam on when the Internet goes out but once I turn off my PC it doesn't work again.

I don't think anyone cares if the game reads some of your hard ware to give you the best settings in a game.
What kind of ads would you get based on your hardware? That doesn't make sense.
"This guy's hardware is incredible, give him the Crysis 2 ad." :v: (i'm not serious)

I guess the computer has to remember your password though before your able to directly go into offline mode or mabye they changed something since last time I went into offline mode. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline]
What kind of ads would you get based on your hardware?
If you have bad hardware they aren't going to be giving you crysis ads.
Wow. I really wanted Crysis ads.
Hardware-based ads seem like such a dumb idea it just doesn't make sense on any level why not just advertise to the broadest audience possible?
offline mode works fine for me i just make sure if i know i wont have internet for a while to set it to offline mode first its that easy why do people make such a big deal out of it
offline mode works fine for me i just make sure if i know i wont have internet for a while to set it to offline mode first its that easy why do people make such a big deal out of it
There have been a couple of times where my Internet unexpectedly stopped working. It's like having the power go out in your house, it's something you can't control. When it just randomly goes out like that, I can't play any of the single player games I paid for on Steam. It doesn't really matter to me since it's so rare, but many people on Facepunch use that same logic for other DRM systems that require an Internet connection. Remember the response to Assassin's Creed 2? Steam is basically the same damn DRM system as that.
offline mode on Origin works for me tho
