Downton Abbey under fire after showing 'shocking' rape scene
Shocking rape scene? As opposed to..?
A prank one? well we all know that didn't go down well
It's depressing but rape is a thing that happens; it is shocking, and disturbing, very often violent, it ruins peoples lives and it's a very real and very big issue. I say "very often violent" because non-violent rape can occur through the use of manipulation and other such things, where no one gets physically hurt but it's still rape.
They should have put a warning on beforehand alerting people that the following presentation contains violent and somewhat disturbing scenes and graphic subject matter and younger or more sensitive viewers should be warned, but people being outraged over the fact rape was a in a drama... really? Rape is disturbing, but I don't believe there's anything wrong with showing it or using it as a plot-line in a series as long as it's done tastefully.
i actually walked past the TV showing this last night and i swear the rape wasn't even shown its just implied?

They did publish a warning before they showed it on TV though.
I seriously hate the british public so much sometimes, always something to whine over.
And by "Downton Abbey viewers" they mean "a couple of over-sensitive idiots who love complaining to Ofcom"
Sons of Anarchy had a rape scene with one of the main characters. I won't tell you who, but they did. And it was actually pretty graphic. But, it didn't really bother me. Then again, I'm not a sensitive knob-goblin.
Oh god
Oh jesus, better watch out for that guy! He might tell on us!
Less folks have been the subject of attempted murder. Rape is close to home.
This is a rather strange line of reasoning
Scenes like this really come down to what type of show it is. In a movie like... cape fear (remake) I think the rape scene just goes along with the narrative, for example. I don't watch downtown abbey so I'm not sure what it's level of violence is.
But if brutal cold-blooded murders and such get depicted I don't see why rape is any different. Both are abhorrent crimes and need to be accepted in a discretionary manner as part of a mature and realistic narrative. If anything being shocked by a rape scene will make people more aware of it.
You could replace "shocking" with a lot of different adjectives and have the story make sense, but I don't see the problem as is?
Downton Abbey under fire after showing 'hilarious' rape scene
Downton Abbey under fire after showing ''delightful' rape scene
Downton Abbey under fire after showing 'erotic' rape scene
"Shocking" seems appropriate, as far as desired adjectives for a rape scene goes. Unless Downton Abbey is a childrens' comedy, or something. In which case, yeah, I guess I could see that being a bit inappropriate.

I still wonder, why is murder acceptable on tv(yes fandoms get pissed, but when don't they get pissed off), but rape is a massive outrage?
Or Breaking Bad. Killing, Murdering, Blowing people up, [sp]BLOWN UP PEOPLE WALKING AROUND FIXING THEIR TIE[/sp] Drug Dealing, but saying "Fuck you"? Ah HELL no censor the shit out of that.

We're just as bad in America, don't you worry. The kinds of things the public complains about is just goofy sometimes.

wasnt there this girl who sued mcdonalds in the US because her coffee was hot or something and she won?
"Showed" ?
More like indeed implied.
The only thing being raped was our ears.
downton should be under fire for being shit tbh
wasnt there this girl who sued mcdonalds in the US because her coffee was hot or something and she won?
Mainly because the coffee caused 3rd degree burns to her genitalia and hospitalized her for several days, but if you love oversimplifications yes.
Guys... The article is from the DailyMail. I thought we all knew not to take anything the DailyMail reported seriously?
I think this is a fitting example of 'News' that the DailyMail reports on:

Too realistic for some people.
There really is no problem showing a rape scene, for one it always makes the actors perform to their best and secondly it is a reality and entertainment is a reflection of reality.
I would understand the anger if it was a low brow humorous show plonking it in the middle of comedy but dramas have always tackled these difficult but great subjects to expand and explore a story.
The show did its job though, people were so upset by it they had to voice their anger.

Just because it appears in the Daily Mail doesn't mean it has no merit.
"'shocking' rape scene"
Congratulations, it portrayed exactly what it was aiming for.
I don't know about you, but I'm never shocked or disturbed after viewing a violent rape. They're usually so commonplace and mundane, so this one must be over the top.
