fuckin soviet commies with the power of wind
Boy has fucked up real big here; if it does bad things to the salmon we can probably expect Canada to be real pissed. Canada's big on salmon, right?
Also acidifying the oceans is a very bad idea on the best of days.
Technically it can reduce the CO2 in the air, which could reduce global warming, but at the same time having that in the water can create higher concentrations of acid, so it's not exactly a end all solution. It's a really short sighted action actually.
It can work both ways, which is the scary part.
Scientists are debating whether iron fertilisation can lock carbon into the deep ocean over the long term, and have raised concerns that it can irreparably harm ocean ecosystems, produce toxic tides and lifeless waters, and worsen ocean acidification and global warming.
How would they even claim the carbon credits anyways?
"Oh yeah, remember that guy who dumped all that iron into the ocean, gave hundreds of people food poisoning and put fishermen on welfare for a few months? That was me, can you give me my carbon credits so I can sell them to a chinese coal plant?"
That kinda proves that they have no idea what causes global warming, since his actions' effects would logically reduce it, not increase it.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm just amazed by something on that scale happening illegally.
Dumping 100 tonnes of something into the ocean has got to cost a lot, right?
That's a LOT of illegal moneys.
Oh boy, here we go again with this bullshit.
[editline]16th October 2012[/editline]
How did nobody notice someone dumping 100 tons of this shit into the ocean?
The very small commercial container ships can haul about 20k short tons, which is around 18k metric tons (tonnes). In terms of ship cargo, 100 tonnes is basically nothing.
Honestly I'm surprised 100 tonnes is even enough to do anything.
Damn...I'm not sure what my thoughts are on this. On the one hand I'm pro-supervillainry, but on the other I'm pro-global warming.
And on the third -mutant- hand, are the ants, the ever gnawing ants.
Meh, no way to reverse it now. Let's get some equipment out there and keep the data this will yield from going to waste.

http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/ferrous-sulfate-price.html
Not as much as you might imagine, apparently.
1) Order 100 tonnes of ferrous iron sulphate from china
2) Set delivery as middle of ocean
3) ?????
4) Profit!
If this causes the ecosystem to flourish, it'll be an artificial flourish. Plankton will grow to massive numbers causing other populations of predators to grow. The tribes nearby will grow too. Then when all those "nutrients" run out, everything will collapse. Everything will die back. Including the native population.

Don't forget about the poisonous ones that will suddenly increase toxin levels in loads of sea creatures.
Living on a coastal town makes you learn these kinds of things.
Guess I should cite a few sources now

Chemtrails aye?
What you mean, those vapor trails left behind by jets? You mean those things that are pretty much just water vapor? You know, like clouds?

Yea definitely, how about you watch the video before commenting.

It's not nearly enough to make a real dent in anthropogenic CO2 levels. You would need a lot of iron to do that.
Basically what happens is these waters are nutrient rich but low in chlorophyll containing phytoplankton because they lack iron necessary for proper photosynthesis. Once they get this iron, either by some douche dumping it, or a volcano, or however else, they EXPLODE into action and cause an algae bloom. The idea is that the algae sucks up the atmospheric carbon and stuffs it deep away under the carpet where we won't ever see it again at least for now. This does happen, it's a natural thing. So people jump on the idea "Hey! If we dump a bunch of this stuff into the oceans it will reverse our mess we caused with pumping out CO2 for a century!"
You're just masking one environmental catastrophe with (potential) other. The full blown effects are not yet understood, Reports are contradictory, and even the amount of Iron you would need if this actually turns out to be a good idea is ridiculous. Iron is much better used as a building material than wasting it in the ocean by the ton. So, NASA and NOAA will probably watch this guy's little experiment with their satellites. There will be a tiny decrease in atmospheric CO2. (at least until China has it's next business hour at the coal plant), The UN will probably write this guy an angry letter, and nothing will be solved, the effects on the deep water ecosystem will remain unknown, and we'll be back where we were tomorrow. As for BC I'm not really sure what the effect's will be for them. It probably won't exist long enough to touch the salmon population.
He shouldn't do it until we know what were doing with this. In a large scale, large enough to actually make a laughable dent in our CO2 output, you're essentially changing the whole regional ecosystem. It's similar to terraforming a desert into a farm or forest. However the unknown effects on the whole ocean system are enough that we shouldn't do this until we know how it effects everything.

Pretty much. At this point you're just making a nice little snack for the primary consumers.

Combustion causes water vapor.
CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O + energy
I just saved everyone an hour of their life.

Ocean runoff of fertilizer is indeed a huge problem. It causes hypoxia and everything just dies. The Gulf Of Mexico is a good example of this. Not because of BP, but because of the farmers in the Midwest and all the fertilizer running off into the Mississippi. It's an environmental catastrophe that no one knows about.
Yea definitely, how about you watch the video before commenting.
Yeah I just sat and watched about 15 minutes, it's dumb, they are automatically jumped from the simplest solution (pollutants from industry) to the less likely solution of chemicals being dumped from aircraft.
You don't see a problem with that? That's a total leap in faith, how can you prove that these materials are present in the soil because of jet contrails and not from run off from farms, fertiliser or from industry?

Water vapor that stays there for hours on end? spreads out like a cloud? High aluminum and barium levels where they have been spraying.
And if its water vapor then explain this video please,

Water vapour that spreads like a cloud? What, you mean like a cloud? Cause they're composed of water vapour you know. Those on/off contrails could easily be because of wind conditions several thousand feet up, you know that you get 100 mph winds up there and turbulence and shit right? It's entirely reasonable that the wind conditions may not favour ideal cloud forming conditions.
You might as well ask why cloud spontaneously appear at certain points over the land/ocean.
Can I have your opinion on that video please? I don't think contrails just turn on and off like that.
Spreads out like a cloud? You mean spreads out like water vapor? Clouds are water vapor....
Water vapor that stays there for hours on end? spreads out like a cloud?
A cloud is water vapor.
The engine is generating water vapor.
If it didn't act like a cloud, that would be unusual, as contrails are clouds.
High aluminum and barium levels where they have been spraying.
So....everywhere? There are planes everywhere. They generate contrails.
And if its water vapor then explain this video please,
Contrails stop appearing once you drop below a certain altitude as it takes an extremely low temperature to make them appear at all.
When I read this, his reason - "hoping to cash in on carbon credits" sounded absurdly childish. Like, I kind of get what carbon credits are, but the way he used it as an excuse, he sounds like a kid trading shit for Pogs.
Can I have your opinion on that video please? I don't think contrails just turn on and off like that.
You know what, fuck it, you're right, clearly it's more likely that the dumping system they use is fucked and died on them rather than weather conditions at that altitude altering the ability for the water vapour to condense.
Forgive me almighty enlightened messiah you have opened my eyes to the disaster that is geoengineering and chem trails. May I share with you a rather recent development I have came across? It troubles me greatly as I have never encountered these before in my life.

Your thoughts?
Please, please tell me we're not arguing that chemtrails are a thing in here.
That's worse than the big pharma conspiracies please don't do this.

ANOTHER BELIEVER!
I told my friends that double rainbows shouldn't exist, that the air and the ambient water vapour in the air must have been altered as it must have a refractive index similar to a diamond but they laughed at me, but the jokes on them when they start breathing in diamonds!

I think the real conspiracy is how media tags work for you but not for me since apparently I couldn't post it myself.
