Not buying games hurts the videogame industry as much as pirating them
Exactly, so why don't they make statistics on how many people didn't buy the game compared to the amount of people who did buy it and complain that people not buying their games is causing them to lose profit.
I call bullshit on this study, as everyone before stated, I'm going to repeat it:
Most of the pirates would never buy the game.
I don't have many friends who game, and all of them pirate. Yet I'm 100% sure none of them would ever buy a single game.
How is not buying them hurtful when they weren't going to buy it in the first place.
Are you really that ignorant to think that every single person who pirates a game wouldn't buy it if it wasn't available for free?
Someone's already forgotten about the recession most of the world is still suffering from.
Hey man, recession doesn't stop people from buying. If people don't spend, it will worsen the recession
Hey man, recession doesn't stop people from buying
Well it does if you have no job.
It says they "lose" sales, I doubt a large number of the pirates would have brought the game anyway, so they aren't losing sales, they're just not gaining them.
Are you really that ignorant to think that every single person who pirates a game wouldn't buy it if it wasn't available for free?
I'm pretty sure they are in majority and it's a very legit point.
Are you really that ignorant to think that every single person who pirates a game wouldn't buy it if it wasn't available for free?
Not in the quantities they download them. The amount of games they would buy would probably be about a fifth of the amount they would download.
Maybe if i make a videogame and sell it at US$10.90, will you still pirate it?
I know there are still some cheapo cheapskates who pirated Minecraft and GMod

Thats usually just morons or kids without a credit card.

I think I remember Notch saying that piracy isn't completely bad, because some of the people who pirate think "This is a good game, I think I'll buy it" or tell a friend, and that friend buys it.
And when I was running a server quite a few of the members had pirated it, then brought it.

This shit is annoying, two of my friends pirated Magicka, one's got 1,779.81€ on his bank account.
Needless to say I won't be talking to him.
Videogames have gotten stale lately, especially in the retail market. I haven't come across a game that's been worth buying in more than two years, and the fact that you can't just go to a store, pick up a videogame and have fun really makes retailers near pointless.
I'm not sure what world you live in. I can go to gamestop or walmart, get a game, and have fun as soon as I get home.
And really? The only way you can say you haven't seen a game worth buying in more than two years is if you just hate video games, because there are a ton of good games that get released every year.
What they need to remember is that not every pirated copy is a lost sale - just because someone downloads a game for free doesn't mean they'd pay for it if they couldn't do that.

There are also a lot of shit ones out there as well though. Like assassins creed brotherhood, not necasserily a bad game but is certainly not worth £40, I loaned it off a friend and I was bored of it within about 5 days of playing it.
Piracy is like trolling.
If you ignored it and focus on how much you made at the end of the day, you won't feel so bad.
If you at least got $1 out of the $10 you lost, at least you earn something.
Piracy is also like rule 34.
If a product exist, there is bound to be a pirated/illegal copies of it
What they need to remember is that not every pirated copy is a lost sale - just because someone downloads a game for free doesn't mean they'd pay for it if they couldn't do that.
Every pirated copy isn't a lost sale, for sure, but it's a bit silly to say that piracy doesn't have a negative impact on sales at all.

So does loaning and burning stuff onto disks and handing them out to your friends however you never see any controversy about that
If the gaming industry is having such a temper tantrum over piracy, maybe they should grow some balls and lower their goddamn prices.
I mean $60 holy shit. It's blatantly obviously to see why pirates pirate. So rather than blow all this money on court fees, lawyers, and hunting down pirates, why don't they just price their games better?
Exactly, the only two ways of preventing piracy are improving the quality of your games and lowering the prices of them.
What they need to remember is that not every pirated copy is a lost sale - just because someone downloads a game for free doesn't mean they'd pay for it if they couldn't do that.
They don't need to remember because they already knew about that. They known about it for a long time. They use big red numbers so they can "justify" their reasons for [insert action] against piracy or whatever. They are not playing it smart.
So does loaning and burning stuff onto disks and handing them out to your friends however you never see any controversy about that
Because there's no way to get numbers for it. You can only guess at how many people borrow games, but you can search "black ops" on the piratebay and see how many people downloaded the torrent.

Games only cost 60 dollars at release. You can buy them later, you know.
Steam has everything on sale almost every week.
Also, after the whole humble indie bundle thing, I really don't think "Games are too expensive" is a valid excuse.

My point was that theres no point on picking on piracy when there are many other things they lose money from. You can't stop people from playing your games for free, the only real thing you can do is make buying games a more viable option
If you lowered the price of games, more people will buy them, which means there is a possibility you will earn more than you do if you make it 60 fucking dollars from the start.
games are too expensive. most of the games I have are either valve games or that was like 50% off or another cheap way. I never buy them retail, way too expensive since I do not have an income
perhaps I'd consider it if it was a really good game
My point was that theres no point on picking on piracy when there are many other things they lose money from. You can't stop people from playing your games for free, the only real thing you can do is make buying games a more viable option
If you don't think a game isn't worth it, then don't buy it, and don't pirate it. If everyone that pirates games because of some excuse just didn't pirate it, and refused to buy it, eventually developers and publishers would get the message. Pirating games and saying it's too expensive doesn't tell the industry they need to lower prices. It just shows them that piracy is a huge thing, and can and will become a real threat for the industry.
$60 is unacceptable. $50 is overpriced, and $40-onwards is more reasonable. And not all of us buy all our games on steam, you know.
As for the last thing, I'm sorry, but I have to call bullshit. There are tons of $50+ games out there. Most of the big name titles that are actually worth playing (Mass Effect, etc) are not cheap. Yes, you can buy a lot of games for pocket-change - but not all of us like playing 2D artsy indie games.
Mass Effect 1&2 are both 20 dollars. (ME2 on PS3 is 60, though, but it just came out).
The most expensive games I bought last year where Heavy Rain and Final Fantasy 13. Both where 40 dollars. The rest of the games I bought where 35 dollars and cheaper.

The industry won't take heed of shit. People will buy their games whether I buy them or not, at least piracy gives them an idea of how many people don't want to buy them.
Er, the game devs know their games are too expensive. They did it intentionally beacuse people just buy them anyway. By (trying) shutting down piracy, they're trying to force more people to buy their $50+ products.
Shutting down piracy would probably send the prices sky rocketing considering piracy is one of their main competitors. Piracy is one of the reasons why PC games cost less than console games.

That is because people still buy the damn games at their high prices. Those who don't, bitch and moan about things being overpriced using it as their excuse for piracy.
$50 bucks for a game has always been the standard. Since the SNES and above, the only overpriced game I bought was Spore (59.99). It was a shame the damn game was terrible, but luckily it was the only game I bought at that price.
It is all one big fucking circle. Dev releases overpriced game, people pirate because its too expensive, devs use piracy as an example to increase the price of their next game. Over and over and over again. It is as bad as the Sonic cycle honestly.
itt: nerds whose moms won't buy them $60 games try to justify piracy

you do know the developers have to get paid for their work right

Or maybe that money is meant to pay for bills, food, house loan and car insurance?
Just because someone has money doesn't mean they can use it as they wish.
