itt: nerds whose moms won't buy them $60 games try to justify piracy [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] you do know the developers have to get paid for their work right
Most films cost more to make than games yet when released on DVD they only cost about £15
Maybe if i make a videogame and sell it at US$10.90, will you still pirate it? I know there are still some cheapo cheapskates who pirated Minecraft and GMod
I've bought minecraft for all my friends that have pirated it :buddy:
Most pirates are poor as fuck and wouldn't buy the game anyway. Not to mention many of these pirated games are later bought legally by the same pirate. Or if one pirate downloads the game many times, it counts as more than one lost sale even if it's not. Statistics like these pop up all the time but they're all wrong. It's like counting birth rate in a country but you include only one race for example.
Well, I guess that explains why most of my friends regularly pirate games, then never buy them (including supposedly "if you pirate this you're a bastard" types of games, like Minecraft and other indie games.) They buy games, sure, but they have really high standards as to what "deserves" to be bought, and even if they download a game to "check it out" they'll usually keep it anyway (after all, you didn't make the people lose money, and they're probably making huge amounts of cash with the game already.) I guess that was anecdotal evidence, but pirates are far from the romanticized view many gamers hold them to be. Sure they're not bastards, but they're not noble "internet white knights."
Most films cost more to make than games yet when released on DVD they only cost about £15
different industry
different industry
Even though fewer people work on a game then those who work on a movie. Then you get the disproportionally large profits the individual celebrities get in movies, something game companies don't have to worry about.
The only game I feel that is worth its money is Call of Duty (at least for me). I definitely get my value of $60 for a whole year of gameplay with my friends.
Even though fewer people work on a game then those who work on a movie. Then you get the disproportionally large profits the individual celebrities get in movies, something game companies don't have to worry about.
yet the people who work on the games are much more educated compared to the guy who operates the boom
different industry
Just look at call of duty black ops, that game seriously can't have cost much more than 10 million dollars to make yet they sold it at about £44. Yet the dark knight cost around 200 million dollars to make and the dvd only cost about £15

MC is not one of them, but stuff like world of goo I never saw the reason to buy it. It's just a glorified flash game. No I didn't pirate it, I later got it in humble bundle for 1cent
Just look at call of duty black ops, that game seriously can't have cost much more than 10 million dollars to make yet they sold it at about £44.
the dark knight is 2 hours long most video games are around 15 hours long
They cost a lot less to make so you can't use the "programmers need to be payed" argument to justify the ridiculous price tag.
most video games are around 15 hours long
since when are recent games long?
They cost a lot less to make so you can't use the "programmers need to be payed" argument to justify the ridiculous price tag.
of course movies cost more to make, they much more equipment movies need cameras, sets, filming rights, hotels for its workers, transport for the film crew etc. what do programmers need? a computer that's why you can't compare the two industries [editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
since when are recent games long?
(off the top of my head) dragon age, bc2, mw2 (including mp) fable 3 ac2 and brotherhood GTA4 Red dead redemption
Maybe RETAIL purchased games. I doubt that when I think of places like steam though.
What about World of Goo? An excellent game, extremely cheap, and a demo was released. All things you say game developers should be doing, but only 1 in 5 players actually purchased the game.
The average videogame costs around $8-10 million to make, while a multiplatform game clocks in at around $18-28 million. Your average summer blockbuster costs anywhere from $100-150 million to make.
What about World of Goo? An excellent game, extremely cheap, and a demo was released. All things you say game developers should be doing, but only 1 in 5 players actually purchased the game.
Calling BS. Unless you have a source.

[editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
Calling BS. Unless you have a source.
I wouldn't believe him. It's a known fact that 3/5 people make up their statistics on the spot.
I live in Australia, most of our games are overpriced/censored/don't even get released here. I'm not forking out $100 to enjoy life a little more
Calling BS. Unless you have a source.
Uhh, how about the developers themselves. http://2dboy.com/2008/11/13/90/
They can make that kind of math. The math they can't seem to be able to do, is that games are generally overpriced, and no one wants to buy overpriced crap that was shat out a year after announcement, meaning a badly done game (bugged, seemingly unfinished, that doesn't seems to give a good enough reason to be bought) Sales with discounts usually give them LOTS of sales. Why don't they set their prices lower? Not at 50% discounts, but, just LOWER. And give us games with good enough reasons to buy. GOOD GAMES!
Take care - they actually addressed this point if you were to read the article and not just the title, it's in the second paragraph. They state that this is not a loss to the industry but a retail value of the amount.
Uhh, how about the developers themselves. http://2dboy.com/2008/11/13/90/
Alright fair enough
I know two people who pirate most of their games and they're poor as shit, one of them steals internet because he cant afford dial-up.
Retail game revenue outnumbers pirated game revenue 1:0
And give us games with good enough reasons to buy. GOOD GAMES!
Or at least make it look good with plenty of trailers and such. This is one of the key reasons why games like MW2 was sold well upon launch.
"the game costs too much therefore I won't buy it" if it was 20 dollars you guys would still pirate it and find some other reason to justify it. i don't agree with prices being like 90 dollars but seriously even if games were cheap you'd all find some other reason to say "well it doesn't have this or that" piracy really isn't a good thing, even for the big developers like EA and Activision. pirating their games simply means they'll blame PC on being useless, develop more stuff for the consoles and ultimately cause smaller developers to follow thus making the PC miss out on more shit and suffer. just swallow your pride, look at reviews, look up videos on youtube, ask a friend online or in person about it and if you think it satisfies you enough, buy the game
And as always, the figures are made up. "We asked the publishers" yeah, um, you don't think they might have a slight bias? If the numbers are so large it should be easy to conduct a real study. Do they ever do it? No.
They can make that kind of math.
" piracy really isn't a good thing, even for the big developers like EA and Activision. pirating their games simply means they'll blame PC on being useless, develop more stuff for the consoles and ultimately cause smaller developers to follow thus making the PC miss out on more shit and suffer. just swallow your pride, look at reviews, look up videos on youtube, ask a friend online or in person about it and if you think it satisfies you enough, buy the game
Uh no it won't. PC will never be abandoned. It's just that right now people don't understand that console games get pirated as much.
I think one of the reasons why people dislike pirates is because they are abusing people's hard work for free, regardless of any money.
