http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_(New_France) hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm what could that area of canada have to do with the french difficult to discern i know, especially if you're completely ignorant of history and geography.
A lot of American history only deals with the French during the "French & Indian War" and nothing further. And the most that's taught about that is: Americans wanted Ohio but the British said no. But the Americans kept asking, so Britain went to war with France and gave it to us. After that, there's a brief mention of Napoleon giving us all this territory. That sums up American education regarding France.
and atlantic canada wasnt originally inhabited by the french, it was inhabited by native american tribes including the iroquois and algonkin [editline]29th November 2012[/editline] but thats just me being pedantic ;)
NO! It was the Mi'kmaq and Beothuk! You can't out Canadian History me!

Don't fix what ain't broken.
I'm an American.
Was just saying, "New France" is barely mentioned, if at all, in most American classrooms. You're one of the lucky ones that learned better, I guess.
actually it was originally inhabited by the eukaryotes eukaryote nation pride
technically dinosaurs were eukaryotes so that's kind of a given
Was just saying, "New France" is barely mentioned, if at all, in most American classrooms.
well it isnt incredibly important unless you are really interested in colonial america. us history isnt really that connected to the french except for the 7 years war.
well it isnt incredibly important unless you are really interested in colonial america. us history isnt really that connected to the french except for the 7 years war.
This is true. And 90% of colonial American history taught is about the Revolution. The other 10% is mostly French & Indian War and some brief mention of Pilgrims and how Columbus found this place.
we learn more about American history then you guys do of Canadian history.

I'm curious, but can't check right now myself, what would the combined population of the new province be, and what would the largest city be? [editline]29th November 2012[/editline] Also, how would this affect equalization payments and other federal subsidies/handouts? What would the cost of university tuition be in the new province? Would this new province be able to absorb New Brunswick's spot on La Francophonie, or would NB just be kicked off for not existing anymore? What would the license plates look like, and would they require them on both the front and back of cars, or just the back?

I think it's silly that some don't. Also I think some of you are getting this confused, it's only a Maritime union, not an Atlantic union. NB, NS, and PEI are Maritime; NB, NS, PEI, and NL are Atlantic. Maritime vs Atlantic: The worst semantical argument in Canada.
I'm curious, but can't check right now myself, what would the combined population of the new province be, and what would the largest city be?
As of 2011 (Wikipedia): 1,813,102 combined (the three provinces) Most populated city: Halifax - 390,096 (2011 census)
Wow, sometimes I forget that The Maritimes has a smaller population than my city. Also, it's not hard to make a license plate prettier than Ontario's. Personally, I find the front plate largely redundant, I wish we didn't need it. I see people driving in Ontario with only a back plate all the time, seldom do the cops seem to notice and/or care.
Front plate is better for traffic cams. Also I'm from Nova Scotia and I don't know what to think.
That was the goddamn eeriest thing about going to St John's: no front licence plates.
We don't have them in NS either, you can optionally have the dual, but it's not required for our vehicles. I really wish we had those skinny European licence plates here, they look so much better. A limited run would be so cool.

Accommodating the EU style plates on the cars would add an extra cost on to it, in the end it's likely not financially viable, not to mention you'd be pulled over by the cops all the time both locally and abroad because it doesn't fit the norm.

I'm not saying we should switch, I think for some of the European car enthusiast it would be cool. It would be kind of like vanity plates, completely optional and for a premium price. I PROMISE ILL STOP DERAILING THIS
I also think Newfoundland and Labrador should be separate, and turn the 3 territories into provinces so we can still keep the 10.
I also think Newfoundland and Labrador should be separate, and turn the 3 territories into provinces so we can still keep the 10.
Is there a large difference between a territory and a province?
Is there a large difference between a territory and a province?
Sort of, territories don't have a real Premier/provincial government and the land is often ignored/exploited.
Is there a large difference between a territory and a province?
Put simply, the provinces are given a specific set out powers in the Constitution Act, 1982. The Feds have all the powers granted in Section 91, the Provinces all the powers in 92. For territories, the Feds exercise both. Territories are locally governed condominiums of the federal government.
Sort of, territories don't have a real Premier/provincial government and the land is often ignored/exploited.
Unfortunately this is how it works out in practice. Also, in Nunavut they have a completely different system. They use Inuit-tradition-based consensus government versus the way the rest of the country uses Parliaments.
Maritime vs Atlantic: The worst semantical argument in Canada.
It's our version of Scandinavian vs Nordic, or Great Britain vs United Kingdom.
