She should have blown his brains out and claimed self defense, she probably would have walked.
apart from the fact their 12-year-old son was standing right next to him idk about you but he's gonna know that the dad wasn't throwing punches [editline]8th July 2013[/editline] also florida to reduce gun crime does 10-20-life pull a gun 10, discharge said gun 20, someone hit by said discharge 25 to life
Their feelings got hurt. We can't have hurt feelings in the United Hugbox. :v:
Discharging a firearm in the general direction of people, possibly exposing others in the surrounding area to collateral, attempting to threaten and intimidate three innocent people with a weapon. I can see why some people are upset, but this lady should not get anything short of five years in prison, and major time with a shrink to deal with her attitude.
She should definitely get jail time, shooting a gun around people is dangerous and should definitely warrant some serious punishment if it's not in self defense, but 20 years is a really long for a crime in which no one actually got hurt.
well good thing she's not going to be in jail for 20 years
You are never supposed to fire a warning shot nor attempt to injure. A firearm is only to be used to protect your own life by immediate ending a threat, not trying to pull non-lethal trick shots or scare someone into doing what you say. A firearm is a killing tool, not a compliance tool. The fact that you're holding a gun is warning enough. As for the sentence, twenty years seems excessive but there's clearly more to the story than the article lets on, so I'd wait to pass judgment until all facts come to light.
I was going to pretty much say this.

How does that warrant 10 years in prison? I've never heard of criminal menacing laws being so strict.
Holy shit, seriously, fuck the US. I've been thinking for a while now I'd like to move to America once I've got the cash but the amount of shit I've been hearing on the news from corruption to the dumb backwards 'justice' system just puts me off. 20 years is life destroying, say what you want about the verdict of this case but it just looks like the US is a terrible country to live in compared to other western countries.
That 10-20-life thing sounds way too "primitive". If you hit a pregnant woman so hard, that the baby dies, you get a minimum of 10 years. If you shoot at someone without the intent of killing said person, you get a minimum of 20. Sounds a bit harsh.
If you read the whole story, 20 years is what she should get. If what the husband said is true, and probably is since there were witnesses there, their kids, then she shot at him while he was looking away and pissing the fuck off out of there. Warning shots? Attempted murder more like
20 years is definitely too much, even if it wasn't warning shots. I can't seem to decipher any specific reason as to why 20 years were given on that second source as well. Also, rather late article, you sure it wasn't posted before? (Snipped previous post)
That judge is chickenshit.
Only works if the person you shoot has skittles Maybe she should have claimed that she didn't fire a warning shot but instead thought she saw a bag of skittles in the distance
Sounds like someone who just saw 10 year old pictures of Trayvon and believes he's an angel. Bringing up the skittles is also the stupidest thing you can say. He had them in his pockets, what does that have to do with anything.
To be honest, they wanted to give her a plea deal for a mere 3 years, but she refused, after the judge had said her stand your ground claim was invalid she was kind of fucked over. People who actually shot at people get less of a sentence than this...
That's a really fucking stupid law.
i live in florida, where that 10-20-life rule was made. everyone here knows it's a shithole. and few people that I'm aware of pay very much attention to the local and state elections, so you basically have this big mishmosh of idiocy floating around in those governments, which allows laws like this to be passed. no greater example of a dumb florida politician is our skeletoresque governor.
People who actually shot at people get less of a sentence than this...
No, they don't, but good job not fucking reading there champ!
She should definitely get jail time, shooting a gun around people is dangerous and should definitely warrant some serious punishment if it's not in self defense, but 20 years is a really long for a crime in which no one actually got hurt.
Intent is a thing that matters.
Guys, this is a sensational headline. Go read the actual story before you get worked up.
"Gray said he put his hands up in defense "buying time" for his two sons to gather their belongings so he could take them and leave. But when he made the remark that their newborn baby must be fathered by her ex-husband, he said she immediately stopped. "She said, 'I got something for your — —,' and walked away," Gray said. "I knew exactly what she was going to do." Gray said she went to the garage, to her truck, to get her gun and then returned back inside the home. "
She probably doesn't deserve 20 years, but she certainly deserves it. And for those of you saying she should have just shot him, if she had, she would have gotten murder for sure. I mean for fucks sake people, if the article sounds too ridiculous to be true, there's probably more to the story than what the headline tells you.
i wonder if that is really true, or the husband lying. especially since what generally tends to be the rule.
WHAT RULE? THERE IS NO RULE THAT GOVERNS THAT.
and comparison to the case of neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who has claimed a "Stand Your Ground" defense in his fatal shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
No he didn't, he opted to go for self defense. Shitty reporting.
To be honest, they wanted to give her a plea deal for a mere 3 years, but she refused, after the judge had said her stand your ground claim was invalid she was kind of fucked over.
She must be very stupid then. She fired a gun, but not in self defense since she didn't shoot her attacker. So she should have understood she was going to get time for firing that gun illegally, endangering lives and so on. That means take the 3 years, probably get out in 1 1/2 years with time off for good behavior etc. She must have taken the position that "I'm a woman, defending myself, I'm not doing any time". Yeah well the fact that she fired a 'warning shot', whatever the hell that is, ended any chance to claim self defense. If you fire your gun you better shoot someone with it. And if you shoot someone with it, you better hope you can show some acceptable reason for that. As to the amount of time, that was a mandatory sentence. Her lawyer, if competent, should have told her she was facing 20 years. If her lawyer told her that and she still turned down the 3 year plea bargain then that's on her.
no fucking way
jesus christ guys she shot at her husband and 2 kids after SHE initiated a conflict, and she has a track record of domestic abuse and problems relating to that she's got some serious issues and from the looks of it the next shot wouldn't have been a warning one as well.
I think this thread is a pretty good example of how biased and prejudiced people have gotten around here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/10-20-Life Sounds really stupid
Are you kidding a shot that hit no one is 20 years but firing guns in the air for 4th of July only gets people in my city a warning.
IIRC when my mom worked for a private corrections company the students she taught were getting 5 years for murder and 15 for attempted murder and upwards of 20+ for drug trafficing. The state of the U.S. justice system is beyond fucked up. How can you even tell that the father isn't a lying scum bag Just read it, the stupid bitch had what was coming to her.
Either way its fucked up.
This is why I don't cast judgment over court cases like this. How am I supposed to know what really happened? They could both be lying through their teeth.

This is a story about Florida, so... yeah, it's Florida, never go there. It's a bad place.
