And nothing is unavoidable, everything that happened, happened because a history of events encouraged it to (french support for syrian rebels comes to mind).
OK then let's not have any semblance of foreign policy in case it triggers some terrorist cells.
If terrorists asked the Singapore government to ensure everybody walks around butt-naked or be bombed would you be glad of their enforcing it?

Well, you brought up the issue of totalitarianism in the first place. And if you had any reading capacity left, my position has always been that we give up some personal freedoms to secure our safety, and whatever other freedoms are left. If you dont see it that way then so be it.
I know I probably won't convince you, so lets drop the topic here. You can continue to enjoy your freedoms while living under the threat of terrorism and I can continue living in a safe yet restricted society. Just, dont ever come to Singapore, in all likelihood it won't be your cup of tea.
You've done absolutely nothing to demonstrate that what he said is wrong and that what you said is right, except to criticize his own government about something unavoidable ("french support of syrian rebels" has nothing to do with personal freedoms) and tragic.
In fact, you've engaged in little more than personal insults towards the people who disagree with you and now desperately want to drop the subject without actually backing up anything you've said -- but not before getting a petty final word in.
That my friend is having your head up your ass.

Again with fucking terrorism? What does this have to do with interior policy?
You call potentially being killed by the government for no reason safety? But terrorist attacks should be avoided no matter the cost? They both end up the same way. I suppose you'd rather be formally executed than die by pipebomb or AK-47. It's just a matter of personal taste I guess.

Your argument reminds me of the joke about the guy who hits his head to keep away the snakes. It's possible to have a safe and free society, the two aren't mutually exclusive.
I get the creeping suspicion that poppyman is just a government shill. A very dumb one but a government shill nonetheless.
Hey, I'm a Singaporean, and let me tell you that Poppyman really does have his head up his ass.
Peace.
Why not? I believe the role of the government is to fulfill the general good. If harsh punishments fulfill that end, i think its justified, and so far we have seen no reason why that should not be the case.
Mind you, on weed I agree completely with you; the sentence is way too harsh for something that is essentially harmless: legalization is the way to go. But for harder drugs, no, we do not need these in our society.
"for the greater good" its a phrase that governments have used to absolve themselves of any crime for centuries. too often there are governments that are too afraid of its own people to let them have their own freedom of expression and the criticisms that come with it, but in the long run, beating down the criticisms with police states, or silencing it through censorship will only breed contempt and hate for the government, having a free and open platform to voice criticism is actually safer than the alternative which historically only leads to death and destruction

something about this concept and sentence just does not sit well with me

It is a nice country, don't let some bullshit laws or people change your views on it.
Remember, it's the government, not the country itself.
