"That month makes a difference," the President said Monday in an appearance on the "Today" show.
And while "that's going to cost some money," he said, "that would be money well spent."
Obama's interview kicked off a special NBC News series on education.
"There's nothing more important than the issue we're talking about today," he said.
Students in China, India and other fast-growing countries are already leaving U.S. students in the dust, he said.
"They have caught up and now in some cases have surpassed us," he said.
But simply throwing money at schools won't fix them.
"Money without reform will not fix the problems," he said.
Obama said his administration's "Race to the Top" program is forcing states and school districts to improve, but he said parents need to get more involved in their kids' education.
Special emphasis, Obama said, should be on beefing up math and science programs.
Getting personal, Obama said his daughters couldn't get the same quality education at a Washington, D.C., public school than they get at their private school
"I'll be blunt with you: The answer is no right now," Obama said when asked whether daughters Malia and Sasha could receive as good an education as they do now at the Sidwell Friends School in affluent northwest Washington.
Tuition at the elite school costs $32,000 for Malia, 12, and $31,000 for Sasha, 9.
The D.C. public schools are "struggling," Obama said.
Asked about incompetent teachers, Obama agreed there were some bad apples in the classrooms and that they need to be removed.
"Sort of like politicians and journalists," the President joked.

I personally think this is dumb. The year was divided pretty much in half.
Now of course what I'm gonna type is a bit of true and probably a bit of retarded opinion, but why don't we reform what is being taught rather than try to throw more shit in the truck?
guys if you dont understand what im getting at right now, here's a comparison
you have a pile of shit
you are trying to clean it up
you throw more shit on it
it's the same fucking thing here
you have a shit school system
you want to make it better
you pile on more pointless days
IT WONT MAKE ANYTHING BETTER
IT'S GOING TO MAKE THINGS WORSE
Fuck NO.
Fuck NO.
why?
our school systems suck, we need more time in the year
yeah but i dont like 4 week summers
This only really applies to those who are going for law or engineering related careers, not for those who are going for entertainment related careers.
Maybe US education would improve if the teachers were paid a decent salary instead

overachiever :jerkbag:
why?

Fuck NO.
Making the school year longer isn't going to help anything. It won't. What we need to focus on is improving the quality of education, not the quantity.
why?

What the schools need is more up to date materials and teachers with the knowledge about their subjects.
I graduated high school in 2004, and we had a map of the USSR in our class room...WTF?

ding ding and ding
yeah but i dont like 4 week summers
The japanese seem to be okay with it.
ding ding and ding
exactly.
Obama instead should spend the money on getting better teachers, instead of making the year longer.
Extending the school year is just going to burn out the teachers faster.
The japanese seem to be okay with it.
Are we japanese?
Also, the article says China.

exactly again.
I don't mind tacking on a month. Education is just that important. OP makes a good point as well though. The administration needs to take a good look at our current curriculum and see the useless crap we take our time out on to learn.

My mother used to be a teacher, but now works in the school board. She says it's quite a bit easier in comparison to other office jobs or even light labor jobs.
Making the school year longer isn't going to help anything. It won't. What we need to focus on is improving the quality of education, not the quantity.
Exactly what I am thinking.
My mom told me about this which prompted me to find an article. I said to her they should reform the curriculum instead of extending it and she told me i was dumb.
:sigh:
Maybe US education would improve if the teachers were paid a decent salary instead
I'm sure this is a stupid question, but I want someone to explain to me why the teachers get pretty shitty salaries whilst the administrators get six figures regularly.
Didn't Obama want to remove summer vacation all together at one point?
Not that this affects me in any way. as I graduated from high school long ago :v:
How many weeks is that? In the UK it's 40 which seems a lot.
Good, maybe there'll be some better posts on this forum then.

Plus this.
Foreign language programs should also be mandatory. I wish I was made to learn a foreign language when I was 8.
Good, make it all year round, maybe there'll be some better posts on this forum then.
i agree
keep these kids in school not online
Maybe the problem is with the schools, not how long students are in them. There are great public schools, and then there are shitty public school. The length of time students are in them is not a factor.
What Obama is forgetting is that those kids actually goto school LESS than United States kids in most cases.
Quantity =/= Quality
Good thing I'm a senior 'cause if they do this then "haha" to you guys. :buddy:
How many weeks is that? In the UK it's 40 which seems a lot.
we have 36, which is about a month less.
As it it, our school district gets way less than the standard vacation. We get around 2 months, rather than the 3 I hear most other schools in nearby districts get.
How about this, we make becoming a teacher a bit more... I don't know... LUCRATIVE so the people that become teachers will actually give a shit about teaching. Also, No Child Left Behind caters the gaggle of idiots and hinders the minute intelligent school population.
It's not that bad of an idea. Though it'd be better if schools were more strict. I mean, when I was in school everyone goofed off and never did their homework, and they didn't care. Extending the school year wouldn't help these people, only the ones who actually care in their education.
