It's an accurate generalization, as oxymoronic as that sounds.
based on gerbile5's response to my post you may be right to a degree
why? our school systems suck, we need more time in the year
In theory it sounds good but in practice I can already feel the disappointment and depression from the kids
Meh I'm a senior I don't really care. We need better teachers instead.
To everyone complaining about the extra month, I don't know how many days i've been in school and we had to end a lesson early because we didn't have enough time. So with this extra month we can put in extra days and spread it out through the year. Not just randomly throw in an extra month of bullshit at the end like you guys think it is. Kinda like adding water into a container not like tying some extra rope onto a rope.
Thank you. We don't need to extend the educational time period, we need to get rid of all the crap we do for the "self-esteem" of the students. No joke here, I was in Precalculus class in my HIGH SCHOOL, and some kid added 1 + 4 = 10 and the teacher literally said, "That's okay, why don't you try again?" instead of calling on 10 other people groaning and waving their hands in the air. Second try he got 6. WITH A CALCULATOR. Third try he got 1. This went on for several minutes until the teacher finally got the balls to say the kid was wrong and show him how to fucking add. We're dumb because of the educational system and our suck-ass work ethic (mostly the latter). /rant
Because they try to help one person? yeah fuck them
Although we do need better teachers, AND FOOTBALL COACHES ARE TERRIBLE EXCUSES FOR TEACHERS GOD DAMN.
based on gerbile5's response to my post you may be right to a degree
Whoops. Didn't realize what page we were on and missed a few pages of stuff. My bad.
I want the school year to be year round.
Most of the teachers I know complain so much about their pay...
They joke. In my state they start at $50,000 a year for 8 hours of work a day for 180 days a year. That totals up to 1200 hours worth of work at a whopping 42 dollars per hour. You know how much I make per hour? Eight dollars. Do you see what I'm getting at? And on top of that, it's relatively easy for them to get a second job each summer (you know how most of them are college graduates and such, that tends to help. Take note you dumb little kids), the same way highschool students often get full-time jobs during the summer, except it takes less effort because someone with a college education is way more likely to get a job (and a better paying one at that) than someone who hasn't even finished high school. So on top of that 50 grand a year, even if they're flipping burgers they're making another $7 an hour, say they work 8 hours a day for another 100 days at that price: it's not uncommon for a first year teacher to be making up to 65 to 70 thousand dollars. Compare that to the average income at 28 thousand dollars and you can see that teachers are not, by any meaning of the word, underpaid.
Although we do need better teachers, AND FOOTBALL COACHES ARE TERRIBLE EXCUSES FOR TEACHERS GOD DAMN.
School sports are a joke and shouldn't exist. At all.

Schools are waaay too underfunded for this. They should stop lowering standards so much if they want kids to do better. Quality > Quantity.
How do you know I'm English? :smug:
:golfclap: Well played, well played...
School sports are a joke and shouldn't exist. At all.
every school i've been to takes school sports so fucking seriously it isn't even funny in private school everything was practically based around them
Although we do need better teachers, AND FOOTBALL COACHES ARE TERRIBLE EXCUSES FOR TEACHERS GOD DAMN.
I don't know about that. Some of my favourite teachers from highschool were coaches. Coach King (I think he was actually a softball coach but whatever) was easily the best teacher I've ever had,
School sports are a joke and shouldn't exist. At all.
I would have to agree to a certain extent. But sports are a good thing for a school to have. There are a few teachers that went to school to be teachers and also coach sports.
every school i've been to takes school sports so fucking seriously it isn't even funny

Well you gotta take into account all the grading they have to do after school...
now that scantron machines are around, that's reduced to near zero. and most of the grading was done during the class period for me. In economics class the tests would be finished and graded within the hour.
Maybe US education would improve if the teachers were paid a decent salary instead
how much do they make
Teachers always left right with the students too. [editline]12:46AM[/editline]
how much do they make
$50,000 is normal starting price. they make too much in my opinion. also read up a bit, I've got a rant about that exact subject up there.
Hows about better teachers instead of less freedom
No I would gladly give up some freedom for a better education, I mean have a boring school year to maybe make millions throughout your life. I would definitely give it up.
School sports are a joke and shouldn't exist. At all.
Sports should definitely exist because they give opportunities to people who are less academic and that can succeed with their physical talent. Just because some football players are asshole jocks doesn't mean every other sport club of highschool should have their programs taken away. For example the people on the golf, billiards, soccer, and tennis teams at my school are really nice people.
I don't know about that. as much as I despise our flawed school system and my shitty teachers and the way my school spent a combined 11 million $ on athletics and Ag. we need more time I tire of the stupid and ignorant people this country carry's were circling a shit hole we need to fix it sometime I hate democracy as it works to slow for improvement... I say make it year round.. I know we need it even if we don't want it.

1) Breadth and depth. We need to keep teaching everything. However, I've seen that nearly every standard and some honors classes do two things: only teach what the standards require and assume that you forget everything from the previous class. Seriously. They all assume that we forgot the entire last year. It should be made that if you need to review you just ask in class and not have a MONTH (seriously, once I had a two month review of the previous year. It was PAINFUL). I'm not kidding. Outlaw this. When you assume students are stupid, even if you don't mean to assume it, they believe they're stupid. Remove standards. When you tell a teacher what a student must know, they only teach that. If a teacher only teaches to teach and has no idea what will be on the final exam, which should not have single answer multiple choice, but larger response-based questions. If a teacher works towards a deep understanding of the subject and not the temporary memorization of useless facts (which often, especially in history, are not true) then the student will wind up much better off. 2) We really need longer classes and less time in school. I have seven classes that are less than one hour long. By the time we get through the procedures at the beginning of class, there's maybe 45 minutes to do anything, which is never enough time. If there was two hour classes staggered between days then there would be enough time to do stuff and actually have it stick. More days of crap won't do anything. 3) Teach a foreign language from EXTREMELY early on. Like, third grade early. There are three different reasons for this. First, it is easiest to learn a second language in childhood. This is a well-known fact, and I really wish that I had learned Spanish in elementary school and not high school. Learning languages in high school sucks ass. Secondly, and possibly more importantly, mastering a second language helps to reinforce your first. If you start to reinforce just how important all of these little rules that little kids learn are, then when they get to the English classes in high school, they won't make nearly as many mistakes. Third, you think through language. If you truly think about it, every higher idea you have is based largely in your language. Abstract languages like English and highly structured ones like Japanese force you to think differently. It's hard for an English-speaker to be exact and hard for a Japanese-speaker to be abstract. When you gain another language, you gain another perspective on life.
and we need to move every subject down 2 levels down.... algebra I in 7th grade....heh
Why don't we just switch over to the vocational system and throw away this old piece of shit education system we have now. The reason we have so many dropouts and people getting jobs out of high school is because kids can't be interested in school if they're taught things they know they'll never use in a profession they aim for. Cut the bullshit at the end of elementary school and let kids pursue their profession choice from there.
Remove standards. When you tell a teacher what a student must know, they only teach that.
I think you missed the point of what I said, you can get just as good of education if they were to be better teachers
Yes I did, although I do agree with you to some extent. Thing is, the best teacher I have we always end up running out of time skipping vital elements in learning. With better teachers and more time to learn we would be better off, than one of the each. Although having a bad teacher and more time is useless, this is why I think they should make teachers take extremely hard test and be forced to pass them. There is one option though, private school where only the best of the best teachers are allowed to teach (if it's an exemplary private school)
now this I do agree with.
Thank you, I'm glad someone understands, and hopefully more.
