MegaUpload Users Planning to Sue FBI Over Lost Data
Some of us have extremely slow upload speeds that make uploading to more than one place something that isn't feasible, and physical backups cost money unless you keep them in your house. (Which only protects against hardware failure)
....Really?
That's the best excuse?
If you have shitty uploading speeds, why are you using a internet storage site in the first place??
Especially when a 4gigabyte flashdrive is cheap as fuck now.
BRB, backing up my patio furniture and lawnmower, can't risk losing anything due to my storage locker not working.
Think before you post, please.
That's why the FBI is being sued and not Megaupload.
If I had some family heirlooms in a storage unit and a construction company demolished the building because they had the wrong address and were supposed to demolish the house beside it, I'd sue the demolition company and not the storage unit's owner.
they didn't delete the data you just can't access it as of now.

You don't live in Canada with upload speeds measured in kb/s. You need to educate yourself or stfu.

I live in a country with shittier internet than yours
if you can back your shit up on only one place, don't use fucking megaupload or similar
You don't live in Canada with upload speeds measured in kb/s. You need to educate yourself or stfu.
The point is if your internet is shit, backing up files over the net isn't the best idea anyway.
Before you dismiss my opinion for thinking I haven't lived such a 'hard life' with such slow internet like you have, I get ~50KB/s max download speed and ~8KB/s max upload speed and I don't see why he needs to educate himself over this stuff.
HAHAHAHAH
They'll just get arrested and put into a secret jail.

Except that storage company would've had 40% of its storage units filled with fake toys from China or something like that. In this case people should still be allowed to get their legitimate stuff (you can't expect though to recover stuff if you also stored illegal things in it, in the eyes of justice)
Megaupload is evidence against the prosecuted. Leaving it up leaves it vulnerable to tampering, and it needs to be examined to count as proof.
Legitimate reason to take it down, stop being retards and expecting online services to be faultless file stores. Storage 101, your storage will stop working at any time, make sure you keep multiple backups on different media and in different places.
Why didn't they just copy all the data on the servers at the time of the arrest and leave it up then?

Except I explained the problems with physical backups in my post that you managed to reply to without reading
You know who wins here.
I read this extremely wrong and got very scared.
Excellent work, guys. So many people lost their business stuff on it.

That's not the same thing at all. In that case its a mistake they destroyed wrong building. In this case they have right building and know there is something illegal in there so I think they should have full access in there until everything has been figured out. If they let innocent guys there to mess with the evidence whats the point of the investigation anyway. Its like someone was murdered with knife in your house and you sue police for taking a knife from your house.
dumb case.
Megaupload isn't a service that proclaims to keep your files safe and secure. It's not a bank, it's a tool.
well....was

That doesn't ignore the fact you're using something that takes more effort and is inefficient.

Hey

What are these then?
Why didn't they just copy all the data on the servers at the time of the arrest and leave it up then?
Because the website is being used as evidence against him? And leaving it up kind of means the operations he was running before the takedown would still be running? That's like asking why the police arrested the dealer, but left the drug stash, all it takes is someone else to take over the reins and the problem begins again.
They could have had the courtesy to set up a download-only service, but I don't think they are actually obliged to, so why the fuck should they when they needed to take the service down as quickly as they could? As said multiple times in this thread, if you are getting your knickers in a twist over your online storage going suddenly, then you are an idiot for not investing in local physical storage. External hard drives, and memory sticks are pretty cheap now (well, maybe not the hard drives at this point), just save a small bit of money when you can and invest in one. Stop replying on other people for storage, it isn't infallible.

Physical backups are CD/ DVD, hard drive and flash drive backups. They only cost what the storage device costs, no more, no less. Your argument for not having physical backup was kind of pathetic to be honest. It isn't the cheapest thing, but it's not extortionate.
Christ's sake, what happens if your internet goes down? :v:
Physical will always be there.
Not your internet.

what happens when your house burns down
what happens when your house burns down
Your data can be recovered from physical.
Its the wonders of magnets and electronics.
There are downsides to both, thats why the 3 Places rule is so important.
One Internet Storage Site
One External Physical Drive
One Actual Hard Drive
data recovery from a hard drive that somehow partially survived through a house fire would be very, very expensive
a flash drive probably wouldn't even make it
data recovery from a hard drive that somehow partially survived through a house fire would be very, very expensive

Actually not anymore, a lot of Mom and Pop hardware/computer stores can recover data for about 100 bucks and if its that important then its well worth it.
There is also the fact there are no details about the fire.
Sure if a fire was directly around the computer then it won't be recoverable.
what happens when your house burns down
Fireproof safe. Where you should also have important shit like personal documents and that stored. Assuming the stuff you are backing up actually is important to you.
I like how we're now giving scenarios to avoid paying 5 to 10 bucks for a 4 gig flash drive to carry shit in :v:
Its simply this.
Storage Sites, aren't perfect.
(What if a Fire hit there?))
Physical Storage isn't perfect.
(Yes they can fail.)
So what do you do?
USE BOTH.
data recovery from a hard drive that somehow partially survived through a house fire would be very, very expensive

I can't see a flash drive surviving a fire either to be honest. The memory cells would be destroyed.
I can't see a flash drive surviving a fire either to be honest. The memory cells would be destroyed.
I'd like it if people stopped putting words in my mouth :v:
They're not going to be taken seriously if they are being represented by a group called pirate parties international... Yarr
You do realize that the Swedish Pirate Party got 2 members elected into in the European Parliament? And that the support for Pirate Parties across the globe is getting more and more support? PPI is the umbrella organization for actual political parties with real political power, not just some silly group.
I've had many USB flash drives die just by dropping them. Of course these have been cheap ones, but still - I don't trust one media of backup.
I have never destroyed a USB flash drive... I even throw those things when someone needs them, and they've been dropped and stood on a lot. But none of them ever broke. And they were cheap ones.
You can get nigh on indestructible flash drives too, you know.
My only flash drive I had fell into orange juice and died.
