Whoever did that needs to be fired, if you're going to cover something up don't make it blatantly obvious. You don't even need to change the brightness to see that something was there before.

I know people who do astrophotography.
They ALWAYS use photoshop to bring out the features, no editing, just levels of colour ,light/dark

Every image ever taken by a space probe or rover has probably been photo shopped before being released. The instruments onboard crafts like Cassini are designed to take scientifically valuable images, not ones that are simply nice to look at, so they have to be processed to show a real colour, well balanced image.
