Lord Heseltine - "The UK will join the Euro... if it survives"

The only logical reason to keep using pounds is because it is worth more than the Euro
You FP brits shouldnt give two shits about your patriotism
I can't see this happening, the majority of the population are opposed to changing our currency... and there's no need to do so. It's a proven fact that if we'd been using the euro when the financial decline happened the country would have had even more deficit. Changing to the euro is entirely illogical.
I personally believe currency is one of the defining features of a country, a solid part of it's history and unique identity. I'm not against the European union but a unified currency has no benefits.
I think everyone was opposed to changing currency here in the Netherlands to.
We have had our currency *Guilders) since 1680 and every coin and note had his own nickname.
Years later im glad that we have euro's though. Makes echanging money abroad much easier and i dont have to get 20 different coins when I travel around in europe.

That just means you get more euro's for your pounds, whats your point?
You dont get one pound for one euro, you get your exchange rate.
Even better, due to people liking rounded numbers, things like 3 pound big mac's would cost 3euro after a while. Leaving you with more big macs in fact the same money.
For the dutch this sucked since the euro was worth more and all the prices just went up...
While Euro is great and all, it just doesn't have the same edge as "Dosh! Grap it while it's hot!"
Surely the last time we were tied to a currency and how that mess turned out should be little warning bells in peoples minds.
yeah all those bent bananas too.
the fuck's wrong with polish people now?
because i don't care about race and i don't think britain is about petty pointless shit?
if having a sense of nationalism is about bad mouthing poles then it's obviously quite stupid.
I think his point is he doesn't want our culture (hah, what little remains) being diluted further.
I think his point is he doesn't want our culture (hah, what little remains) being diluted further.
culture is not controlled by currency or the will of the population, never has and never will be.
culture will change (diluted if you must) as people do and fighting it isn't effective, you're just gonna piss yourself off and nothing else.
Hell no. That'd be the end of cheap import games from the UK. I save up to 25% on new games thanks to those.
Isn't the Pound one of the best currencies at the moment in terms of exchange rate?
Pretty much always has been.

Like it or not, but a currency does contribute to a countries heritage and identity.
I'm not sure I like Britain being clumped onto the EU like this.
All I'm getting from this is that the EU are Borg
All your money will be added to our own, resistance is futile.
Lol at "Nationalists" who cling onto the pound because it is an integral part of Britain.
Well in the past Hong Kong was once integral to the British. Along with state sponsored Anti-Catholicism.
What's the point in a universal currency?
I hope you are joking, but one massive advantage is all the hassle caused by currency conversion and minting would be over.
Everybody could easily and quickly exchange goods and services using a single unified currency. Having more than one currency means we have buildings dedicated to pumping out too many coins, printing too many notes and creating a lot more hassle than is needed.
Having multiple currencies is like having a different railway gauge in each country.

Whether you like it or not, Britain is as much a part of Europe as any other European nation.
I go to my local city and I see more immigrants in it than I do British Citizens (40% of the city is polish now).
I'll have you know I am half Polish (With a loose grasp on the language) and what you are saying really pisses me off by basically pointing out that people like me aren't British.
I'm glad that immigrants move around the world to dilute old cultures and create new ones, and as the world modernises this process is only going to accelerate.
Screw you, you outdated nationalist. Nationalism is an idea that is dying slowly and painfully every day, and I relish in that fact.

We might be part of Europe, but that doesn't mean we should automatically join the Euro if it is not in our interest. That's like saying that Ireland should join Britain because it is part of the British Isles.

And should the day come when the Euro is worth more than the British Pound, would you be saying the same thing?
And should the day come when the Euro is worth more than the British Pound, would you be saying the same thing?
That depends entirely on the situation at the time. Most likely no, since the only way it could work is if financial control over the European countries is heavily centralised.
who cares
How would all the Americans feel if all of north and south America joined the same currency, with no American presidents or anything else American on them. Having multiple countries with different interests and stability isn't the way to go, as the saying goes "if it aint broke don't fix it".

Whether or not our currency is called 'the American dollar' is irrelevant. If tomorrow, Canada, the US, and Mexico joined under one currency, I would not be bothered in the slightest.

Still no considering if one countries economy goes into melt down it can cause the currency to lose value.
What will I do with my pounds and pennies if they decide to switch to the Euro?
I'll be rather pissed.

IIRC most eurozone countries had a switchover period for a couple of months where people could walk into banks and trade the currency in.
Theoretically speaking if we did convert to the Euro, would the Euro become a 'stronger' currency?
We should go back to pounds, shillings and pence. Bah.
And should the day come when the Euro is worth more than the British Pound, would you be saying the same thing?
but the euro is worth more!
exchange rates have nothing to do with spending power. surely even the most hardy nationalist can't be that deluded to think that Britain alone has more economic power than the whole Eurozone!
ukip gon b mad

Of course not, but I don't want the economic value of the currency of my country to be depending on governments I haven't voted in. I want that kind of stuff controlled from this country not else where, where the people of Britain have no control over as to who is in control.
Euros suck. I want me pretty dutch money back.

Or you could just share things with the rest of Europe.
