Flung out of the system? That's a little frightening.
Happens more often than you would think
I find the concept of being on any other planet eerie and disturbing. Or even just the concept of a massive lump of materials/gas floating along in a vast, lifeless galaxy. I can't even comprehend what it would be like to be the one of the first people on Mars and to grasp the distance between yourself and the Earth.
you're a lump of materials/gas floating along in a vast, lifeless galaxy

More "God damn amazing" than anything. and you want something even more scary? you're an astronaut and the hull is damaged, so you have to go out and weld it back together through some total misconceptions, your ship fires up its warp/ftl/whatever drive and now you're literally absolutely alone in the middle of "Bum fuck no where space"
really it's just an 'unborn' star that didn't gather enough mass to start nuclear fusion.
Not really, those are called brown dwarves, and are much larger. This newly-found thing shares a lot more characteristics with planets than with stars.

Articles like these make me feel really sad because I feel as if we won't be a space-faring species by the time most of us are long gone. We can always hope though.
We will never be space faring as long as each and every space flight is a highly calculated mission. If it can be simplified to "hey lets go to the moon and have lunch" (just an example) then it may happen.
that's actually really sad. poor planet, all by itself. kinda want to give the thing a hug but then you realize that it's no thing. but it's still sad
I think the distance scale gives it more impact
That image has the opposite effect for me, the moon is larger and closer than I expected

Perhaps its orbiting something unimaginably giant. I wonder how a planet gets the color purple..
That planet looks fucking awesome. I so wanna go there. Safely, of course.
It's dark, cold and has no air.
Imagine standing on pluto.
Perhaps its orbiting something unimaginably giant. I wonder how a planet gets the color purple..
It's probably not orbiting around anything unimaginably big, it may have originally been in an orbit when it was far closer to a star or something, but must have then began orbiting with such a speed that it pulled loose and is now too far away from any large gravitational source to be able to swing back into orbit which makes it not in orbit but maybe on it's way another star, to orbit or whatever. Atleast that's as far as I understand it, I'm no astrophycisist.
It's dark, cold and has no air.
and you most likely sink through the gas "surface"
Perhaps its orbiting something unimaginably giant. I wonder how a planet gets the color purple..
It's probably an artist interpretation.
Along with the rest of it's moving group, it's orbiting the galactic center.
Alright so basically it's in no orbit unless you count the gravitational orbit but since no object can escape the gravitational orbit, it's not essential :v:
[t]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-F5fZt8J-GRQ/UYBydMax13I/AAAAAAAADeY/19WlCfjnO_g/s1600/earth-from-the-moon.jpg[/t] this will make it more clear for you on how they felt. Imagine just drifting through space faster than any other ship, beyond the reach of any kind of help.
Reminds of that Futurama episode where Bender gets flung out into space. Imagine just drifting through space faster than any other ship, beyond the reach of any kind of help.
I've wanted to write a short story about this kinda thing, about a guy in a simple spacecraft out alone inbetween two galaxies or something out in nothingness with no contact or chance of ever encountering another life-form. Like I don't know, I want to write it cause I'd like to see if I would commit suicide or sustain the whole life untill I get too old.
Here's the details about it: http://arxiv.org/abs/1310.0457
Alright so basically it's in no orbit unless you count the gravitational orbit but since no object can escape the gravitational orbit, it's not essential :v:
What? It's prefectly possible to escape the orbit around the galactic center, just like it's possible to escape any other gravitational object as long as you don't get too close to a chunk of mass that is compressed in a small enough space (I.E. black hole). Even though the center of the Milky Way is likely a black hole, that doesn't mean you are unable to escape it unless you get much closer than we are. And what do you mean by "the gravitational orbit", there are no "non-gravitational orbits" in astronomy.
Ah you're right, I don't know what I'm saying :v:
Ah you're right, I don't know what I'm saying :v:
Well in fairness, the galactic orbit is very insignificant as far as we should be concerned anyway. With an average generation span of 30 years (as in each new member of a family would get children every 30 years), it would take 20833.3 generations before we moved 1 degree through our galactic orbit.
These aren't bad when you consider the star systems ejected at hyperspeed into intergalactic space when they drift close enough to the center of the galaxy. Some of those planets ejected don't always keep their star. Completely isolated.

If you do decide to write something about that hit me up either through PM or through my visitor messages thing, I would love to read something like this.
