Can I please wake up now?..
They could've done 20~ different stick figures, some are female, some male, maybe animals too, and all of this shit would've been fine. Would be cool too
Congratulations - by making the distinction in a genderless stick figure you have created inequality in a place it previously did not exist. :goodjob: Imagine being so anti-something you end up fostering the exact thing you claim to oppose.
i dont have to imagine it, its a reality of some circumstances.
Are we being ableist by having them the figures walk instead of rolling in a wheelchair instead?
What unconscious bias? That only men walk across intersections? I'm not angry because I personally give a shit I'm angry because conservatives are going to drudge this up, point at it, laugh, show it to moderates who'll also shake their heads and agree with them that it's stupid, and that I'll then look dumb by proxy for being politically associated with these movements. This is pointless. Find actual problems to solve.
The only people on this forum to have drudged this up as an example to make progressive politics look bad are people like you who claim to be progressive themselves [editline]8th March 2017[/editline]
What unconscious bias? Plus it's not like Melbourne isn't well managed

It just seems like the gender equality angle is weirdly forced, like... Unconscious bias? What unconscious bias specifically? Most of the places I go just have stick figures on the walk signs. I mean by all means if you wanna' put in female walk signs 'cause it's neat and pretty I'm totally onboard it's just weird that it gets dressed up as if it's righting some big social wrong. Like the quote on the first page:
'Culture of sexism' includes small issues, Minister says
Using cries of sexism to defend why you need traffic lights changed just weakens the word sexism. Crying wolf leads to the cry eventually losing its power, and I find that thought really uncomfortable.

And if this is enough to flip moderates then frankly, they deserve to lose what they lose by voting tory. I mean hell, disregarding the propagandists this to me seems like pretty much what should be happening in a democracy. A small interest group desiring these minor changes petitions and gets them.
It's quite sad that it has gotten this overreaction It's a small city initiative to make the lights have a variety of each gender in order to reduce unconscious bias. It's small potatoes.
People are allowed to disagree about small things.
Everyone associated with this should clearly be relieved of their duties. The committee is comprised of highly incompetent individuals who don't see the light of day.
We've got even worse ones in London, there's no fucking point at all. Just have a plain light. I mean yeah green is the signifying colour that you can proceed but it seems like it'd be strange to just have it flash those.
????????????????? If the micro silhouette people's gender is an issue then why not replace it into something else? [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32814946/dont-walk-sign.jpg[/t] Don't tell me "oh no its now a problem to illiterate and dyslexic people"
like traffic lights? fuck off
I don't know about you, but I don't let my women cross the street. Theres no woman in the light is there? I also always remind her of that. That they are inferior. "You see that honey? It's a man the light represents. Not a woman. A man! Then again, why are you crossing the street? Go back inside, straight to the kitchen!" This is all so ludicrous.
My post was like two sentences long, dude.
yes - what's masculine about the torso, friend [editline]a[/editline] it's a silhouette of a torso with the shoulders in such a position where you can't tell if it got a flat chest, so i'm curious what it is that makes it masculine. no need to be patronising!
do you look at a publicity stunt for cancer research and think "well if they're doing this then I guess cancer is over". just because an advocacy group does a bit of harmless promoting doesn't mean that "we now have equality so feminism please go away." this is such a weird way to dismiss equality campaigning, like I guess if they do literally anything other than donate money to women's shelters then feminism is over. except people would probably complain too because the shelter isn't gender neutral.
This is a bad analogy. This "stunt" is actually hurting the movement itself. It waters it down by making people like myself think that if this bullshit is such a serious issue then there cant be serious problems. This money would have been better invested to actually fight real misogyny like genital mutilation of girls or patriarchal oppression in muslim dominated countries. But I guess they just dont care about that. They care more about their made up problems. Who knows, maybe there is a little bit of corruption going on between the committee and the company which got the job to change the traffic lights.
So the replacement implies females should be wearing dresses. Doesn't seem too progressive to me. Sexist even.
