You act like you don't know atheist is a genuine greek word for "no god".
You act like you don't know atheist is a genuine latin word for "no god".
I am the god of atheism.
I got no problem with the Bible as is, it's a good book, has some nice poetry and it has some guides to help you be a better person. I still don't believe in the man upstairs, though.
The way I see it, with the state of the world being what it is, he is either dead, or he doesn't care.
By "God is dead" Nietzsche didn't mean literally dead, he meant that god is less and less used as an explanation for unexplained things. It's why he added "we killed him" to it. You might have misinterpreted that statement :buddy:. Even if you didn't get that statement directly from Nietzsche's work.
Maybe that's because most Atheists I run into are liberal douchebags who have patience for nobodies opinion but their own. Nothing on you, of course; you don't seem that way if indeed you are an Atheist.
Please understand that by definition the beliefs of atheism does not contain any notion of hate towards religions, or the belief that religions are wrong. You're referring to "anti (against) theists (god believers)" when talking about hate towards religion. The atheists that say religion is bad, are also antitheists. You are less likely to hear even a thing from the other atheists.
I want to give you this message as well: atheists do not live by a lower standard than christians. I myself, a materialist atheist (I believe that everything is explainable by science eventually) and a bit antitheist, live a generally happy life. I do not feel hate towards any deity, including the christian god. Moreover, I do not feel anything for a lucifer, the devil, satan or any other nickname you can imagine for the general "evil-doer" in Christian religion or any other religion. Simply because I do not believe they exist.
I go to school like everyone else and with a bit of luck I will be visiting university next year. I say this just to make clear that atheists aren't any more or less intelligent than Christians. I am capable of feeling hate, but also love, compassion and I all other emotions humans can have.
I always say: If you want to attack religion, make sure to attack the religion (and their morals etc.) itself instead of the people that believe them. I have successfully discussed religion with theists (even calvinistical ones) without it turning into a fight.
Discrimination with religion as a base happens way to often, "You fucking christian" and "liberal douchebag atheist" are said way too often. It is wrong.
Did they get permission from the original author?
You don't need any permission to make up fairy tales
What. I haven't read the bible in sometime, but I'm pretty sure God tells Adam to reproduce.
Only after he eats the fruit.
So how did they revise Ezekiel 23:20
you guys like being douchebags about religion dont you
Christianity is something that lends itself to douchebaggery.
They should have used the word "loot" instead.
A. The word Holocaust means "burnt offering," so that change shouldn't be shocking.
B. Since it uses different languages with different alphabets, there can't be an absolutely perfect contextual or literal translation of the entire Bible and have it all make sense. So I think it's fine and probably a good thing that we keep going back to the originals and trying to come up with better translations.
C. The books of the Bible are an oral history of the Jewish people, a collection of their myths, and stories interpretations of the teachings of Jesus and what the apostles did afterwards.
D. Myths are stories, and shouldn't be taken literally. Smart people with faith should know that these stories aren't meant to be taken literally. Look for the messages instead. The Adam and Eve myth is basically just there to preserve some core beliefs all three Abrahamic religions share: That there is one God, that He created all, that what He created was good, and that humans are imperfect.
E. Fun fact: From what I've heard recently, the "Tree of Life" or "Tree of Knowledge" is better translated to "The Tree of Omniscience," apparently.
F. Religious people in this thread shouldn't attack athiests. They can beleive what they want. Personally, I don't think they'll burn in some hell. When they die, if God exists, I really doubt they'd say "nah, you're not real." (They'd probably say "You have some explaining to do," though, ha ha.) An all loving God wouldn't send them to a hell for that, I don't think. If God knows all, He'd understand their reasons for not believing.
G. Athiests, don't attack Christians. Some people actually do think their faith through, so don't insult religion as a whole. At least not in front of us, thanks.
Just my 15 cents on this thread.
From what I gather, they just translated everything into a more modern dialect.
I don't see what's so bad about that.
This is Facepunch, where we believe that English should be spoken exactly the same way, forever (as long as it's spoken the way we speak right now)
I heard about it on christmas last year. Some pastor talked about the bible and then he said that the "forbidden fruit" is sex.
uhhhh do you know anything about anything
also ban the bible!!!!!!!!
uhhhh do you know anything about anything
Yes, he knows that a pastor said that the forbidden fruit is sex.
Unfortunately, biblical literalism has become very common to the Church. They take the metaphors and figurative language in the Bible, and decide to practice it down to the number. A scripture I remember said something like this:
"Hate your father and mother, for they are sinners.", where one of the principles of Christianity says to "honor your father and mother". I came to the conclusion, that the verse meant not to necessarily despise your parents, but rather put the will of God before theirs.
It should also be noted that most conservative Christians fail to read the bible in its entirety. The apostle Paul constantly stated that the old laws of Jewish faith no longer apply to Christians. I can't remember where the scripture is located, or how it's said exactly, but I do remember hearing something similar to this:
"For the punishment for sin is death, and He has taken your punishment so you may have everlasting life"
How this slips through the minds of many Christians, I have no idea. I figure its attributed to the vast amount of corrupted ministers and priests that inhabit the Church. The quoting out of context mixed with biblical literalism becomes what many consider the stereotypical Christian.
And that, is why I feel ashamed to be a believer :Dawkins102:
(I apologize for not being able to give an exact verse number and such. I remember hearing this quite a while ago from my youth minister. Albeit, you could say that he's doin it wrong too, but I doubt it, considering that he wasn't born into the faith.)
I find it really funny that they titled it "The american bible"... :v:

"George W. Bush 1:1 In the beginning, it was a peaceful time. Africans were slaves and the white prospered. Then the cursed democrats said "Let there be equality!", and the honest white folk mourned."
"Ronald Reagan 14:13 And in the year 1980, Reagan set out to share his new idea of a free market and trickle down economics. He stood on a hill, and preached: 'The government is tyrannical, and only works to progress its own interests. For these reasons, demand lower taxes, and allow multi-million dollar corporations to take hold of your daily lives!' the populace was quick to take this idea in."
"John Boehner 27:8 The widow and her child mourned in the streets, for they had lost their homes. They were leeching off of unemployment benefits, as she could not find a job. And so, we had stripped her of her income in order to protect the richest 10% of Americans who could use that money to buy a boat."
Yeah, I could imagine an "American Bible". At least, a conservative edition.
Time to start a new trend. "damn check out that chicks huge spoils"
