Didn't Maryland give out a reward for each fish of some invasive species caught in their rivers last year? Indiana should do that.
fuck (most) invasive species
Pretty rich coming from a human! One rule for you humans, another for everyone else, is it?
I live here in Indiana, and in our Agricultural Science Class we learned about Asian Carp. They actually put electrical checkpoints on rivers going into Lake Michigan that they use to shock or kill the fish or otherwise deter them. real life magikarp aren't they? [editline]10th September 2012[/editline] I know why don't you guys introduce american fishes in Asian waters? That would make it even
The carp are bad because they eat SOOO much, they could kill an entire ecosystem. They don't have any natural predators too so their population rise exponentially
The carp are bad because they eat SOOO much, they could kill an entire ecosystem. They don't have any natural predators too so their population rise exponentially
If they're good eating, Indiana should let loose the world upon fishing for them year round.
If they're good eating, Indiana should let loose the world upon fishing for them year round.
AFAIK, there are no restrictions on catching them. The problem is that people do not want to eat them, because they're not that great and full of bones.
They eat nasty shit off the bottom of lakes. TBH any bottom feeders taste like fucking garbage unless it's a pretty clean lake.
They eat nasty shit off the bottom of lakes. TBH any bottom feeders taste like fucking garbage unless it's a pretty clean lake.
Yeah, pretty much. I don't know if you've seen the Illinois river lately, but it definitely isn't clean.
Lol I live in Illinois, the only good catfish I've ever eaten (I've fished in a shotload of rivers so I know my stuff) was from a lake in arkansas that was a rock bottom. Pretty much any silt/sand bottom lake will give you nasty ass carp/catfish. Maybe bigass tiger muskies would eat them, but still those take years to develop and grow to a big enough size.
AFAIK, there are no restrictions on catching them. The problem is that people do not want to eat them, because they're not that great and full of bones.
Hrm, nuts. Well, I'm out of ideas.
You'd need to introduce a large amount of apex predators such as muskies. But then they'll eat a lot of other fish too, so it's a really fucked up situation.
Well like I said before, maybe if Indiana offers a reward for each fish caught. If the fish taste bad, they can just discard them at wherever Indiana designates. Given how the fish are threatening such a big industry of the state and the region, I think paying people for a day of fishing for them isn't that bad.
I honestly like my catfood idea.. I mean, It's perfect. I die inside when I see catfood labeled with tuna and salmon. Why waste the good stuff on cats? Feed them the abundant shit nobody wants to eat that we can literally fish to local extinction and help the environment and economy in the process. Plus, they readily jump into boats when the right vibration is applied. These things are dying to be a commodity.
I kind of wonder what being hit by one of these feels like. I am not inviting any of you to find me and slap me with a fish.
That's a genius idea right there, I'm sure other animals can eat processed fish too.
They can and they do. A large chunk of the global catch goes into agricultural feed. [editline]9th September 2012[/editline] In the form of fish meal.
These things are insane.
Indiana's water freaks me the fuck out. This + sharks in the rivers and there is piranha in the reservoir near where I grew up.(someone keeps reintroducing them after they've killed them all)
Why don't we go and get the animal that eats them in Asia and bring them over here! That way, we can keep them under control. What can go wrong? Gosh, I'm so smart. Seriously though, I guess they're a common food fish over in china. They're just assumed to be gross because they have the name "carp", which we associate with disgusting common carp, but they are both unrelated.
No they're gross because they eat off the bottom of already polluted lakes + streams.

BRILLIANT!
These things are insane.
Fisherman cancels fishing; interrupted by carp.

These things are dying to be a commodity.
Pretty sure the stuff that ends up in cat food is the heads and guts and other unpleasant tasting bits. The problem with trawling them or whatever is that you're going to end up catching every other fish too, or missing some and having them repopulate at an alarming rate since there's no population 'cap' left to limit the survival of their young.
Can you eat them? Because if so we could totally overfish them and not care right?
No they're gross because they eat off the bottom of already polluted lakes + streams.
What we call "Asian Carp" is actually four different species of carp from Asia. Bighead, Grass, Silver, and Black carp. Bighead and Silver carp are actually filter feeders and don't eat off the bottom like the common carp. Which is also technically an invasive species in the US. Though they've been here so long It's not even worth fighting. The fact that silver carp and Bighead carp don't eat fish makes them a pain in the ass to catch with traditional means. However, since they don't eat fish, they are generally lower in mercury meaning they're healthier for you than most fish. [editline]10th September 2012[/editline] Silver and Bighead are also more widespread and invasive than the other two.
The only fish I like is halibut , because it's like a big juicy white steak. I don't like most fish because of the 'fishy' taste, salmon is real gross but bass and panfish are p. decent.
