calling it now, this will be valve's first game since ricochet that did not become an overwhelming success
So is this Gabe's first or second surprise?
Probably his first.
Ehh I tried LoL and HoN but they didn't rack up to the nice Wc3 feel of Dota
DOTA is made by a game owned by blizzard using the engine, and graphics by Blizzard. I'm glad that Valve would get on this before Blizzard would
But that doesn't mean Blizzard made it, they made the tools, not the content, saying this is like saying that Valve made Garry's Mod
DOTA is made by a game owned by blizzard using the engine, and graphics by Blizzard. It doesn't really need to be changed, HoN and LoL are new DotA variations made to people's likings. Besides, Valve makes FPS games. They have no experience with RTS or RPG games whatsoever.
But that doesn't mean Blizzard made it, they made the tools, not the content, saying this is like saying that Valve made Garry's Mod
Team Fortress was originally a mod from the Half-Life engine. Along with Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, and others. Valve caught onto those mods and made worldwide, bestselling retails out of those and I expected Blizzard to catch on with Dota, but I guess not.
DOTA is made by a game owned by blizzard using the engine, and graphics by Blizzard.
DotA is a mod. A custom map.
Yeah but they also acquired the teams that made those mods, which would technically make them owners of them
Still, they're under Valve's banner. When I played DotA I was thought that Blizzard would get the developers that created DotA and make a more refined game out of it.

And regardless, Valve may not be super experienced in it, but that's a fucking stupid way to judge what a great game studio can do in new territory. Really short sighted and arrogant.
So is this Gabe's first or second surprise?
The first surprise was the TF2 store, if you didn't read when it came out.
what engine would they use?
what engine would they use?
I'd say source engine like they used for Alien Swarm.
Probably his first.
If it is one of the surprises, it would be the second. Mann Co store was the first.
I'd say source engine like they used for Alien Swarm.
So I guess it'd take some time to make it then?

The executives at EA are what killed spore, and the executives at valve might make or break this game. Valve should try to make their own RTS games, before trying to remake a game that has very particular fans. If they fuck it up, the project will fall flat on it's face. DotA fans are serious, there are a lot of serious DotA gamers. Valve makes successful FPS games, as I've said, it doesn't mean they make successful video games in general, it's a rather stupid to assume they do.
Thank you Mr.Mod for telling me to get out when I haven't dissed it at all and was just curious. I guess its a crap game with fanboys.
Aha! So you have played it!
I've already gotten addicted to League of Legends, but I'm a huge Valve fan. I feel so conflicted.
Aha! So you have played it!
I wouldn't say it's a crap game, but DOTA fans aren't exactly known for their kindness...
Valve themselves aren't really making it, its more like IceFrog making it, except with a bigger budget, more resources, and maybe a few Valve guys as advisors.
I've already gotten addicted to League of Legends, but I'm a huge Valve fan. I feel so conflicted.
They bought the rights, the game isn't coming out for at least another 2 valve years, that's like 37 years in regular time.
what engine would they use?
Probably Source.
Valve, i know that you try. But the problem is that League of Legends is free. And you are going to charge me money for DOTA.
i am going to LOL when DOTA isn't related to the DOTA you all think of it's going to probably be a western-style shooter in the 1800s, if you guys want to recall the Turtle Rock Studios website update a while back that led to nowhere
Valve, i know that you try. But the problem is that League of Legends is free. Yeah, its likely, but they might do something similar to Alien Swarm. 2) If DOTA2 turns out to be great, why not pay for it?
The first surprise was the TF2 store, if you didn't read when it came out.
how many surprises did Gabe say they were going to announce?
how many surprises did Gabe say they were going to announce?
Three within the next year.
Valve, i know that you try. But the problem is that League of Legends is free. And you are going to charge me money for DOTA.
Many people bought HoN.
