First things first, in the current state, the military isn't defending shit. Second of all, the regions the military are in are in such turmoil, 'aid and comfort' is kind of a commodity. There are, beleive it or not, other ways to provide foreign aid that doesn't involve destabilising the region and killing people. You have doctors without borders, the UN, Red Cross, Red Crescent. etc.
